India's internet user base is projected to surpass 900 million by 2025, driven by the growing use of Indic languages for digital content, according to the 'Internet in India Report 2024' by IAMAI and KANTAR. As of 2024, the number of active internet users in India stands at 886 million, reflecting an 8 percent year-on-year growth.
Rural India is leading this surge, accounting for 55 percent of the total internet population with 488 million users. The report highlights the increasing importance of Indic languages in shaping internet consumption patterns. "The internet user base in India is set to surpass 900 million by 2025, driven by the growing use of Indic languages for digital content," the report states.
The report reveals that nearly all internet users&mdash;98 percent&mdash;access content in Indic languages, with Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam emerging as the most popular due to their extensive availability. In urban India, over half of internet users, around 57 percent, prefer to consume content in regional languages, showcasing the growing demand for localized content.
Significant progress is also noted in narrowing the digital gender gap. "47 percent of all internet users in the country are women, so far the highest," the report says. Women now make up 58 percent of shared device users in rural India, indicating progress toward greater digital inclusion.
The report also points to a slowdown in the pace of internet penetration, especially in urban areas, compared to the rapid growth in previous years. Rural India continues to experience double the growth rate of urban regions, highlighting untapped potential in these areas. Urban India is also leading the adoption of non-traditional devices, with smart TVs and smart speakers growing by 54 percent between 2023 and 2024.
Despite the growing adoption of new devices, mobile devices remain the primary means of internet access for both rural and urban users. Rural India is dominating in key online activities such as OTT video and music streaming, online communication, and social media usage. However, urban areas still lead in net commerce, digital payments, and online education.

Researchers from Lancaster University Management School, the Norwegian University Science and Technology and Trinity College Dublin examined the cognitive function of more than 2,000 retired people from across Europe. They found that post-retirement Internet&nbsp;usage is associated with substantially better results.
The study, published in the&nbsp;Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, focused on a sample of 2,105 older people from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland who had been retired since 2004.

A word recall test was conducted where individuals were asked to recall a list of 10 words immediately and then again five minutes later. Results found that, on average, people who used the Internet&nbsp;after they retired were able to recall 1.22 extra words in the recall test compared to non-Internet&nbsp;users.
Interacting with others online, finding out information or simple tasks like shopping online can all make life easier for retirees and boost their cognitive functions. However, it is not yet clear which specific tasks on the Internet&nbsp;are responsible for improving cognitive performance.

Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology has reportedly set a new Internet speed world record of 319 Tbps long-haul transmissions over 3,001 km.
A team of researchers at the institute successfully completed the first S, C and L-bands transmission over long-haul distances, using a 4-core optical fibre, in the standard diameter of 0.125 mm.
Combining different amplifier technologies, the team reportedly also managed to produce a record-breaking 957 petabits per second x km.

Decoding Cyber Sovereignty with Pukhraj Singh

The past few years have witnessed a change in the way countries attempt to govern the vast, deep and decentralized cyber space. In the midst of large-scale disinformation campaigns threatening the very existence of public institutions, this need to govern stems from very real issues. Yet, the way we choose to do it is as vital in order to maintain the social contract between our society and the State. Regulations without a profound understanding and examination of the workings and meaning behind the cyber realm could leave us in a dire position. With this in mind, in this interview, we speak to Pukhraj Singh to explore four key questions that are critical to both our virtual and physical existence in the backdrop of national sovereignty based cyber regulations.
