According to ILO&rsquo;s projections,&nbsp;only 43.2% of the world's working-age women will be employed in 2021, compared to 68.6% of working-age men.

Death, grief and job losses from the pandemic have affected everyone but women&rsquo;s jobs have been hit much harder than men, the International Labour Organization (ILO) shares in a report.
Between 2019 and 2020, 4.2% of women's employment was eliminated due to the pandemic, representing a drop of 54 million jobs, compared to 3% of men's employment or 60 million jobs, the UN agency said.&nbsp;&nbsp;
A major portion of this discrepancy is due to the fact that far more women shifted their focus to care work or tending to their family&rsquo;s needs.&nbsp;While this work is important, it is unpaid and not accounted for in employment figures.&nbsp;Additionally, lockdowns reduced access to contraceptives which left at least 12 million women unprotected. This led to&nbsp;1.4 million unintended pregnancies&nbsp;during the pandemic, as per UNFPA data.

And even though women were at a greater risk of layoffs and reduced pay and working hours,&nbsp;only men's employment is likely to recover this year to 2019 levels. The ILO noted that those working in the accommodation, food services and manufacturing sectors were hit the hardest.&nbsp;Informal workers, many of whom are women, have also suffered major job losses.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The International Labour Organisation on Sunday said that as of now, migrant workers can change jobs before the end of their contracts without obtaining the permission of their current employers. The 'kafala' system tied workers to their employers, who had say over whether they could leave their jobs or even the country. Qatar also has adopted a minimum monthly wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals. The minimum wage rule requires employers to pay allowances for housing and food as well if they don't provide those for their workers.

Dubai, PTI: New labour rules in the energy-rich nation of Qatar &ldquo;effectively dismantles&rdquo; the country's long-criticised &ldquo;kafala&rdquo; employment system, a UN labour body said Sunday.
The International Labour Organisation said as of now, migrant workers can change jobs before the end of their contracts without obtaining the permission of their current employers.
Qatar also has adopted a minimum monthly wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals (USD 275) for workers, which will take effect some six months after the law is published in the country's official gazette, the ILO said.
The minimum wage rule requires employers to pay allowances for housing and food as well if they don't provide those for their workers.
Amnesty International praised the move as &ldquo;an encouraging sign that Qatar may finally be heading in the right direction,&rdquo; although employers still can file criminal charges against &ldquo;absconding&rdquo; employees, meaning those who left their jobs without permission.
&ldquo;We call on Qatar to go further with these reforms, including removing the charge of absconding, to make sure that the rights of all workers are fully protected,&rdquo; Amnesty official Steve Cockburn said in a statement.
Qatar, whose citizens enjoy one of the world's highest per-capita incomes due to its natural gas reserves, partially ended the &ldquo;kafala&rdquo; system in 2018.
That system ties workers to their employers, who had say over whether they could leave their jobs or even the country.
Qatar is being transformed by a building boom fuelled by its vast oil and natural gas wealth.
Like other energy-rich Gulf nations with relatively small local populations, Qatar relies on well over a million guest workers, many of them drawn from South Asian nations including India and Nepal.
Rights activists long have criticized the &ldquo;kafala&rdquo; system as allowing abuses of those foreign workers.
