&lsquo;It&rsquo;s not rocket science&rsquo; is a phrase that has long been used to denote the intellectual rigour required or not required to do something.&nbsp;But a new British study says that&nbsp;being a rocket scientist or brain surgeon&nbsp;does&nbsp;not necessarily&nbsp;make someone&nbsp;sharper than&nbsp;a commoner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Researchers compared&nbsp;test&nbsp;results&nbsp;of&nbsp;329&nbsp;neurosurgeons and&nbsp;72&nbsp;aerospace engineers against 18,000 members of the UK public,&nbsp;all&nbsp;of whom&nbsp;took&nbsp;the Great British Intelligence Test&nbsp;(GBIT)&nbsp;which examines&nbsp;aspects of cognition, like planning and reasoning, working memory, attention, and emotion processing abilities.&nbsp;
Publishing the findings in the BMJ, the team&nbsp;said that only neurosurgeons&nbsp;showed&nbsp;a significant difference from the general population and that was&nbsp;their&nbsp;quicker problem-solving speed but slower memory recall.&nbsp;This may be due to the fast-paced&nbsp;nature of neurosurgery.&nbsp;Meanwhile, rocket scientists&nbsp;scored&nbsp;higher&nbsp;than neurosurgeons&nbsp;for attention and mental manipulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What this essentially means is that everyone has a range of skills, some may be better at certain skills but it is quite unlikely for one person to be the best at everything.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;it might be time to ditch the rocket science idioms and&nbsp;use something like &lsquo;It&rsquo;s a walk in the park&rsquo; or &lsquo;It&rsquo;s a piece of cake&rsquo; instead.

There are some people who can just float through any icky situation by making up one explanation or the other on the fly.&nbsp;Researchers have&nbsp;now&nbsp;discovered&nbsp;that such&nbsp;individuals with the gift of the gab may be&nbsp;more clever&nbsp;than they let on.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
The study, published in the scientific journal&nbsp;Evolutionary Psychology, claims that bullshitting, defined as&nbsp;communication characterised by an intent to be convincing without&nbsp;any&nbsp;concern for truth, may be a sign of intelligence.
Assessing over 1,000 participants&rsquo; ability to produce satisfying and seemingly accurate bullshit, the team found that people who were able to come up&nbsp;with&nbsp;seemingly accurate definitions of fake concepts also scored higher on cognitive tests.&nbsp;
The researchers concluded that this could be&nbsp;initial evidence for bullshit ability as an honest signal of intelligence.
While the paper says that&nbsp;the ability to&nbsp;bullshit may&nbsp;be&nbsp;helping some&nbsp;people navigate social systems,&nbsp;more research is needed to say whether&nbsp;a regular practice of&nbsp;bullshitting could make&nbsp;you&nbsp;smarter.&nbsp;
Another interesting&nbsp;finding&nbsp;from&nbsp;the study was that&nbsp;people who are good at bluffing don&rsquo;t actually engage in it very often. But those who&nbsp;bluffed&nbsp;away&nbsp;frequently&nbsp;were also more&nbsp;likely to fall for other people&rsquo;s baseless chatter.&nbsp;
So, can you bullshit a bullshitter? The science on that is still unclear.&nbsp;
