India&rsquo;s top men&rsquo;s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarterfinals, while two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu lost in the women's singles second round at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Thursday. Satwik and Chirag, the 2023 champions, showed great temperament under pressure to register a hard-fought 16-21, 21-18, 22-20 win over world number 16 Danish pair of Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard in a 68-minute second-round clash.
Satwik and Chirag, who had reached the semifinals of the Singapore Open Super 750 last week, thus remained the only surviving Indians in the competition.
The former world number one pair will face Malaysian seventh seeds Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee next.
"Today felt like one of those days where we just weren&rsquo;t at our best," Satwik said.
"It wasn&rsquo;t about the strategy being wrong &mdash; it was more that we were giving away the points. If you look back, nearly 15 to 20 points came from our own mistakes. They didn&rsquo;t win those points &mdash; we handed them over.
"In the first game, it was 15-all, and then suddenly it slipped to 21-15. I just felt like we weren&rsquo;t focused enough &mdash; like we weren&rsquo;t really there today. But even then, we kept believing, taking it one point at a time.
"The coaches kept telling us, &lsquo;Calm down, it&rsquo;s okay even if you lose, just relax.&rsquo; So we tried to stay calm and composed, to just play our game and see how it goes," he added.
Earlier, Sindhu faltered in the deciding game to go down to world number 8 Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the second round.
Sindhu squandered a 15-11 lead in the decider to lose 22-20, 10-21, 18-21 in a gruelling 78-minute battle.
It was a disappointing day for the rest of the Indian contingent, as Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath, along with the women&rsquo;s doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, also bowed out in the second round.
While Sathish and Aadya were outclassed 7-21, 12-21 by the sixth-seeded Thai duo of Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran in just 25 minutes, Gayatri and Treesa put up a fight before losing 13-21, 22-24 to Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto in 46 minutes.
Satwik and Chirag, playing only their second tournament since returning from injury, had to do the catch-up in the opening game, as the Danes dominated the net play with sharp interceptions and won most of the short rallies.
The Indians trailed 6-10 at one stage and, although they pulled level with four straight points, the Danish pair kept their nose ahead to pocket the opening game.
The second game was a tight affair, with the Indians putting pressure on the back court. From 14-14, Satwik and Chirag reeled off five straight points to force a decider.
They carried the momentum into the third game, racing to a 5-1 lead. But the Danes clawed their way back to 8-8 after two unforced errors from Satwik. The short rallies continued and the Danes held a slender one-point lead at the mid-game interval.
The Indians stayed close at 14-15 despite a few misjudged lifts going long. Two quick points earned by Chirag brought them back at 16-17, and they eventually levelled at 19-19.
The Danes earned a match point, but Chirag&rsquo;s sharp body return made it 20-all. Chirag then produced a fine serve to earn match point, and Satwik sealed the win with a precise return that caught the line, sparking celebrations.
In the women's singles, Sindhu looked in control after overturning a 10-16 deficit to win the first game. She led 15-11 in the decider and had the momentum, but a series of errors proved costly.
Chochuwong capitalised on the lapse, winning five straight points &mdash; four of them due to Sindhu&rsquo;s miscued smashes and drops in fast conditions.
"I think I should have converted it to win...but overall, I'm happy with my performance. A lot to learn from this match and this tournament as well and prepare for the next one," Sindhu said.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty battled their way into the pre-quarterfinals but it was curtains for Lakshya Sen in the very first round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Tuesday.
Sindhu overcame long-time rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 22-20, 21-23, 21-15 in an absorbing one-hour and 19-minute clash in the women's singles.
I have been losing in the first rounds (of late) so it was very much useful and important for me to win matches like these," said Sindhu after her match.
Sindhu faces sixth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the round of 16.
Sen, the 2021 World Championships bronze medallist, fought valiantly before falling 11-21 22-20 15-21 to world number two Shi Yu Qi of China in a gripping first-round men's singles contest that lasted 65 minutes.
Shi had entered the event as world number one but dropped a rung in fresh rankings issued on Tuesday, soon after his contest.
The 23-year-old Sen, returning from a back injury that ruled him out of last week's tournament in Malaysia, showed remarkable resilience. Trailing 11-17 in the second game, he mounted a spirited comeback, saving a match point and clinching the game 22-20 to force a decider.
However, the momentum proved short-lived as Shi grabbed control in the third game to seal the match.
HS Prannoy also bowed out from the USD 1,450,000 tournament. The 2023 World Championships bronze medallist lost 17-21, 18-21 to Indonesia's Alwi Farhan.
Later, Satwik and Chirag made it to the round of 16 after beating the Indonesian duo of Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana 18-21 21-18 21-14 in their opening-round match that lasted 67 minutes.
Sindhu vs Okuhara ============ Sindhu and Okuhara, both of whom former world champions, have struggled in recent times. While Sindhu's best performance this season was a quarterfinal finish at the India Open in January, Okuhara hasn't made it past the second round in six events.
The two stars added another chapter to their storied rivalry, engaging in a war of attrition in an error-marred match that had plenty of game points and match points.
"It is always good to play with her, obviously it is not easy but at the same time I would have finished it off in two sets but I should have been a little more cautious because I had two match points," Sindhu said.
The decider followed a familiar pattern of conservative play, with neither of the two taking undue risks.
Sindhu led 11-9 at the break and then unleashed a series of winners to surge to 20-12. The Indian star earned eight match points and sealed the win by converting the fifth to book her spot in the round of 16.
The win helped Sindhu improve her head-to-head to 11-9 against Okuhara, who had defeated the Indian in the 2017 World Championships.
Sindhu acknowledged that the game has changed a lot in the last few years.
"If you see now the women's circuit, it is more of like you know those long rallies, less of attack and defense have become very strong like at that point of time it was like we were attacking mostly and then you know it was all like a faster speed game," she said. She also noticed improvement in her game but admitted that fitness is still a work in progress.
"After the India Open, it has been a bit of a struggle. It has been a rough patch the last couple of games but I can see there is a bit of improvement like the last tournament. You need to keep trying patiently so that you get that rhythm," she said.
"I am happy but I need to definitely improve a lot more and be injury free and of course focus on my skill." Sindhu was the lone Indian woman to advance to the next round.
Malvika Bansod retired mid-way through her women's singles match against Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia. She was leading 21-16 16-15 before she slipped on the court and clutched her knee in pain before retiring.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist duo overcame a game deficit to beat unseeded Min Hyuk Kang and Seung Jae Seo of Korea 17-21 21-19 21-18 to seal their maiden Super-1000 final berth. World No 6 Satwik and Chirag will face the winners Pramudya Kusumawardana and Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan of Indonesia and second seeds Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh of Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Prannoy failed to rise to the occasion against top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, going down 15-21 15-21. Prannoy played the catch up game from the onset. He showed sparks in between riding on his cross court smashes but Axelsen's drop shots and court coverage was good enough to help him take the lead. It was Prannoy's sixth loss against the Dane in the international circuit as against two wins.

India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty shocked top seed Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto to sail into the men's doubles semifinals before HS Prannoy entered the last-four stage of men's singles competition at the Indonesia Open here on Friday.
Prannoy registered a win over Kodai Naraoka of Japan.
However, world championship silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth bowed out of the men's singles competition after going down fighting to China's Li Shi Feng in the quarterfinals.
The first Indian to take the court, Srikanth lost 14-21 21-14 12-21 in one hour and nine minutes against world No. 10 Feng.
The win enabled Feng to restore parity as far as his head-to-head record against Srikanth is concerned, which stands at 1-1 now.
The seventh-seeded duo of Satwik and Chirag then displayed a flawless game to outwit Indonesia's Alfian and Adrianto 21-13 21-13 in 41 minutes.
Satwik and Chirag will play the winner of the quarterfinal between Koreans Min Hyuk Kang and Seung Jae Seo and Indonesia's Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin.
In the final Indian match of the day, seventh seed Prannoy prevailed over Naraoka, seeded third, 21-18 21-6 to book his semifinal berth.
Prannoy will take on the winner of the match between top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Chinese Taipei's Tien Chen Chou. In the battle between Srikanth and Feng, the Chinese came out on top in the first game despite taking more time to get off the blocks.

South Korea's Kim Ga Eun had the top comeback of the early action, bouncing back from 8-17 down in the deciding third game to stun Canada's Michelle Li 22-24, 21-17, 23-21.
India's Priyanshu Rajawat also advanced to the Round of 16 after getting a walkover against Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand.
However, it was curtains for young Indian female shuttler Aakarshi Kashyap as she crashed out in the opening round of women's singles.
