India on Monday said it is “deeply concerned” that despite its repeated urgings to both Russia and Ukraine, the safe corridor for Indian students stranded in Sumy did not materialize.
“India has been consistent in calling for an immediate end to all hostilities,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti told the UN Security Council meeting on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
He said India has reiterated its urgent demand for safe and uninterrupted passage for all innocent civilians, including Indian nationals remaining in Ukraine.
“We are deeply concerned that despite our repeated urgings to both sides, the safe corridor for our students stranded in Sumy did not materialize,” Tirumurti said.
Tirumurti said India has managed to facilitate the safe return of over 20,000 Indians from Ukraine.
India has been making efforts to evacuate its citizens from the city but with little success due to heavy shelling and air strikes.
To evacuate its citizens from war-hit Ukraine, the Indian government has launched 'Operation Ganga' under which thousands of stranded people, mostly students, have been evacuated from nations bordering Ukraine's western frontiers. However, the evacuation from the eastern part remains a challenge.
Tirumurti underscored it is important that humanitarian action is always guided by the principles of humanitarian assistance - humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. “These should not be politicised,” he said.

Indian student Harjot Singh who was shot in Ukraine's capital Kyiv a few days ago is returning to Delhi today, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh said.
His family in Delhi said they are "very very happy" that he is returning and are eagerly awaiting his arrival.
"Harjot Singh is the Indian who was shot during the war in Kyiv. His passport was also lost in the chaos," V K Singh tweeted.
He said Harjot Singh is reaching India with him on Monday.
On February 27, 31-year-old Harjot Singh, along with his two friends, boarded a cab for the western Ukrainian city of Lviv in a bid to escape Kyiv. He received four bullets, including one in the chest.

According to an Indian Express report, In 2020, 12,680 graduates from Chinese universities appeared for the examination. This was followed by 4,313 graduates from Russia, 4,258 from Ukraine, 4,156 from Kyrgyzstan, 3,142 from the Philippines, and 2,311 from Kazakhstan.
How many cleared it?
Over the last five years, the average pass percentage of the FMGE examination has been nearly 16%, and the pass number for graduates from Ukraine has been just 17%.
As per the WHO norms, a country needs 1:1000 population-doctor ratio. In India currently, the ration is 1:1456. India needs 1.38 million doctors. According to the National Health Profile 2021, there are 1.2 million registered medical practitioners in the country.
Experts say that capping the fees at private colleges and increasing the number of MBBS seats can help realise a lot more students' medical dreams in the country and also perk up the availability of qualified doctors.

Even as the parents of Indian student Naveen who was last week killed in Ukraine wait for this body, a BJP leader has heaped insult on their injury.
The BJP MLA from the Hubli-Dharwad constituency in Karnataka, Arvind Bellad, has reportedly said that "a dead body takes up more space in a flight".
Responding to questions on the uncertainty over when Naveen's body would be brought back to his hometown Haveri, the MLA said "instead of a coffin, nearly eight to 10 people can be accommodated on the plane".
He added that the government is making all the efforts to bring Naveen's body back.
21-year-old Naveen, who was studying medicine at the Kharkiv National Medical University, was in a queue outside a grocery store when he was killed in Russian shelling on a government building.

The Indian government on Thursday refuted reports that Indian students were taken hostage in Ukraine.
The ministry of external affairs, in a statement, said the government got no reports of any hostage situation involving Indian students in Ukraine.
The government response came after several media reports quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin telling Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Ukraine forces took Indian students hostage and used them as human shield against the Russian fire.
The MEA said that Indian Embassy in Ukraine is in continuous touch with Indian nationals in Ukraine. It noted that with the cooperation of the Ukrainian authorities, many students have left Kharkiv on Wednesday.
The government said that Indian students are being evacuated with the help of Ukraine authorities and its neighbours, including Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungry, Slovakia and Moldova.
Thousands on Indian students have returned from war-hit Ukraine in the last few days while thousands are still stuck there. Indian government has been coordination the evacuations under "Operation Ganga".
