India plans a strategic experiment against Iraq in the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers, missing key player Soumya Guguloth.

The Indian football team will be open to experimentation when it clashes with a comparatively easy rival Iraq in a Group B clash of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers, here on Wednesday.
Winger Soumya Guguloth, who suffered a nasal bone fracture during the match against Timor-Leste, has been ruled out of the contest.
India currently sit atop the table with six points and a goal difference of +17 after wins against Mongolia (13-0) and Timor-Leste (4-0).
Thailand are in second place, also with six points but with a goal difference of +11.
Iraq have already played three games and are on four points. They must defeat India to have any chance of staying alive on the road to Australia.
While it has turned into a race between India and Thailand to increase their goal difference before they meet on the final day (July 5), Blue Tigresses coach Crispin Chettri affirmed that earning three points are the bigger priority, and the focus is only on the game against Iraq for now.
"Thailand is the last match, but for now, our full focus is on Iraq. We shouldn&rsquo;t worry about how many goals Thailand or we have scored, or will score. The priority is to approach the Iraq match with a positive mindset and go for the win," said Chettri.
After defeating Timor-Leste on Sunday, Chettri and his coaching staff stayed at the stadium to watch Iraq suffer a 0-7 drubbing at the hands of the hosts.
It has been a rollercoaster ride for the 173rd-ranked West Asians, who were held goalless by Timor-Leste in the first game, before defeating Mongolia 5-2 to earn their first-ever victory on the international stage.
Giving his opinion on the Iraq side coached by their former men's international Abdul-Wahab Abu Al-Hail and ranked 103 places below India, Chettri said, "For me, Iraq are not as weak as people might think. They're a good side, but they've been playing back-to-back matches, so we may have an advantage in terms of recovery." "Overall, I don't see a big difference between Iraq and Timor-Leste. I feel Timor-Leste were more organised. So, I think we&rsquo;ll get more opportunities to play our game against Iraq. It should be a good match for us to try a few new things as well." With only two days to prepare after the match against Timor-Leste, the Blue Tigresses utilised their break fruitfully with recovery in the pool and a gym session on Monday morning, followed by a full training session on Tuesday morning.
"We worked on the areas where we fell short in the matches against both Timor-Leste and Mongolia. We&rsquo;re now giving players specific responsibilities, whether it&rsquo;s in attack or in 1v1 defending. That was the main focus of the preparation," said Chettri.
After only the first two games, Chettri has already used 22 players, including all outfielders, from the 23-member squad.
The Indian coach expressed he might look to continue with the rotation trend in the Iraq game and distribute valuable minutes to younger and newer players, while also hoping to keep everyone fresh for the last game.
"More or less, all players have got chances. Of course, we cannot take the Iraq match lightly. There may be some rotation, but key players will still get minutes.
"Giving game time to upcoming players is important at such a stage, but in crucial matches, we'll have to stick to a core group. If we manage to score early, then we may be able to rotate more freely," said Chettri.

The ICC showpiece is almost a year away, but this series is a perfect stepping stone after their disappointing group stage exit from the last year's edition.
The management will try to draft in some initial ideas about the peculiar playing surfaces and the fickle weather pattern that jointly make playing cricket a unique experience in England.
The rubber might also give the think-tank an inkling on the kind of players who could potentially make an impact here.
The return of explosive opener Shafali Verma apart, India have added some new names such as Kranti Goud, Sree Charani and Sayali Satghare into their squad.
Shafali, in all likelihood, will be paired with Smriti Mandhana at the pole position where Uma Chetry failed to impress as an opener in the few matches she played.
This is India's first T20 assignment of the year, and the return of off-spin all-rounder Sneh Rana and fast bowling all-rounder Amanjot Kaur will be keenly watched.
Rana is coming back to the side since February 2023, and her confidence has been boosted by a fruitful outing in this year's Women's Premier League (WPL).
However, India will miss the experience of pacers Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar, who are out of this series with respective injuries.
Therefore the team management will hope that the young names will step up, and they know the challenges of playing England at their home.
The visitors have lost both their practice matches &mdash; a 50-over and a T20 game &mdash; to the ECB Development Squad, and they will be up against a formidable team led by the talismanic Nat Sciver-Brunt.
The home side has several experienced stars in their ranks such as Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont, Danny Wyatt-Hodge and Sophie Ecclestone.
Along with them, England will also field talented young players such as Issy Wong, Alice Capsey and Sophia Dunkley.
In that context, India will require their premier batters like skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Mandhana, Shafali, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh to be in their groove from the first match itself.
Harmanpreet might also have regained her confidence after guiding Mumbai Indians to their second WPL title earlier this year, contributing with the bat and as the skipper.
However, India will welcome some more runs from their batters lower down the order, who in the recent past have failed to shore up the team in some critical moments.

Although in India, women are working in every field, there are women even today, who do not step out of the house even once in a day. This has been revealed by the study &lsquo;Gender gap in mobility outside home in urban India&rsquo; published in Science Direct's journal Travel Behavior and Society. According to this, almost half of the women in urban India do not step out of the house even once a day. &nbsp;
The study was done on 84,207 women and 88,914 men, where it was revealed that only 47% women step out of their houses on a normal day, that is, 53% women are the ones who don&rsquo;t. Whereas 87% of men go out of house on a normal day.&nbsp;
The study also revealed that women generally need a solid reason to go out whereas, men do not need reasons as such. It was observed that 81% of women who are students or are working, step out of their house once a day. On the other hand, only 30% of stay at home women go out of the house and 70% of those women do not go out of the house even once a day.&nbsp;

The dream is over! India crashed out of the Women's T20 World Cup with a 5-run defeat against the reigning Champions, Australia. Heartbreaks at ICC events have become commonplace for the Women in Blue, who continue to chase the elusive dream of an ICC trophy. In 2017, they failed right at the final hurdle against hosts England in the ODI World Cup. In fact, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, losing their last 7 wickets for just 28 to fall short by 9 runs. At the 2020 T20 World Cup, they surrendered to the Aussie onslaught. Chasing a massive 185-run target, the team was shot out for 99. Cut to 2022, Mithali Raj's team failed to even qualify for the knockouts at the ODI World Cup in New Zealand. While they did manage to reach the final of the Commonwealth Games months later, they succumbed to pressure yet again. Chasing 162 for victory, India were cruising at 118/2, only to lose their final 8 wickets for just 34 runs, with Australia taking the Gold.
And in Cape Town on Thursday, when Indian fans were hoping &amp; praying for a different outcome this time around, the Women in Blue faltered. In a first for cricket, the ICC on Friday named an all-female panel of match officials, including the Indian trio of GS Lakshmi, Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan, for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Three match referees and 10 umpires make up the 13-woman team. It's a landmark moment for the ICC and its ambition of advancing the involvement and visibility of women in cricket.
India's Rathi and Janani, who earlier this month became the first female umpires to officiate in the Ranji Trophy, will be umpiring at a T20 World Cup for the first time.

The Women in Blue have made two changes to the squad that lost 1-4 to Australia recently.
Pacer Shikha Pandey returns to the side, with Meghna Singh dropping into the reserves.
All-rounder Pooja Vastrakar is also part of the squad but her availability is subject to fitness. Sabbhineni Meghna &amp; Sneh Rana though have been included as reserves.
Meanwhile, Newcomers Devika Vaidya &amp; Anjali Sarvani have been rewarded for their performances against Australia and will be on the plane to South Africa.

The Women in Blue were just too good for the Lankans on the day, winning a record 7th Asia Cup title in one of the most one-sided finals ever.

India's Renuka Singh picked up the Player of the Match award for her figures of 3/5 that helped India restrict Sri Lanka to just 65/9.

It was a walk in the park!
The Indian women's cricket team sealed their supremacy in the sub-continent with their 7th Asia Cup title, defeating Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in a one-sided finale in Sylhet.
Having been asked to bowl first after losing the toss, the Indians made Sri Lanka pay dearly with Renuka Singh the destructor-in-chief.
Some abysmal running between the wickets, along with Renuka's 3-fer had Sri Lanka on the mat early on. The Islanders just kept losing wickets, finishing with a paltry 65/9 from their 20 overs.
In reply, India hardly broke a sweat with Smriti Mandhana recording yet another quickfire fifty to take the Women in Blue past the finishing line in just the 9th over.
With the victory, India lifted their 7th Asia Cup title from 8 editions, with 2018 being the only time they failed to win the trophy.
