Indian Immigrants Dominate US Education Landscape: Think Tank Reveals Surprising Stats

According to an analysis by a US based think tank, MPI, Indians contribute a whopping 2 million degree holders to the US. That's 14% of all educated immigrants in the country!

Picture this: You're in a room full of America's most educated immigrants. Look around. Who do you think makes up the largest group? If you guessed Indians, you're spot on! But the scale might surprise you. According to an analysis by a US based think tank, MPI, Indians contribute a whopping 2 million degree holders to the US. That's 14% of all educated immigrants in the country! To put that in perspective, China comes in second at 7.9%, while the Philippines takes third with 7%.&nbsp; But here's the twist: Education doesn't always equal success. About 20% of these educated immigrants face a tough reality. They're either unemployed or working in jobs well below their qualifications. Think degree holders driving taxis or washing dishes.

A 20-year-old Indian student was found murdered in his car in a forest in Boston. Paruchuri Abhijit, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district, was studying engineering at Boston University.
According to the Times of India newspaper, unidentified assailants attacked Abhijit on the campus and dumped his body in a forest.
The cops were called in after Abhijit's friends complained about his disappearance. The police then tracked down the deceased by tracing his phone signals.
According to reports, the authorities are probing the matter and the search for the accused is underway.
The reasons for the murder are yet to be ascertained as some reports claimed that he was killed for money and a laptop.
However, there are suspicions regarding the circumstance of his murder since he was attacked on the campus, hinting at the possibility of a clash with fellow students.
Meanwhile, Abhijit's body has been moved to Guntur.
There has been a spate of Indian student deaths in the United States in recent times.
In 2024, eight students of Indian and Indian American origin have died. Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian-American student at Purdue University, was found dead in Indiana in early February. Before that, Syed Mazahir Ali, another Indian student, was assaulted by robbers in Chicago.
Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old Indian student, faced a fatal attack by a homeless drug addict in Georgia State's Lithonia city. This tragic list also includes Shreyas Reddy Beniger, Neel Acharya, and Akul B Dhawan, who all lost their lives under various circumstances, triggering concerns about the safety and security of Indian students in the United States.

An Indian-origin student was found dead in Ohio, making it the fourth incident this year in the United States, and the third in a week.
Shreyas Reddy Beniger (19) was a student at the Linder School of Business in Cincinnati. He had an American passport and was an Overseas Citizenship of India card holder.
Sharing the news on social media X, the Consulate General of India in New York said foul play is not suspected at this stage, and that they are in touch with the victim's family in Hyderabad.
"Deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of Mr. Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, a student of Indian origin in Ohio. Police investigation is underway. At this stage, foul play is not suspected. The Consulate continues to remain in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance to them," it said.
According to reports, Benigeri's funeral is likely to be held on Saturday.
Benigeri's death days after 25-year-old Vivek Saini was hammered to death Georgia state's Lithonia city by a homeless man.
Julian Faulkner, who is also a drug addict, repeatedly struck Saini's head with a hammer inside a store in Lithonia.
On 30 January, Neel Acharya, a student at Purdue University, was found dead on the campus premises at 500 Allison Road in West Lafayette.
Another Indian student, Akul Dhawan, was found dead outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in January.
The 18-year-old's autopsy suggested that he died from hypothermia.
However, Dhawan's parents have filed a complaint, accusing the university's police department of negligence and inaction after Akul Dhawan was reported missing.

A 25-year-old Indian student was hammered to death by a homeless man at a store in Georgia, US. A CCTV footage showed Vivek Saini, who was working part-time, being struck on his head about 50 times while leaving for home. He recently earned his master's degree from a university in Lithonia.
Employees told the police that Saini was taking care of accused Julian Faulkner, who is also a drug addict,&nbsp;for the past two days as it was freezing outside.
The staff said that they gave him a jacket, food, and water, and took care of Faulkner on compassionate grounds.
On January 16, Faulkner was warned by Vivek Saini that he would call the police if he didn't leave the place.
Enraged, the homeless man then got a hammer and mercilessly struck him repeatedly, M9 News Channel reported on Sunday.&nbsp;
Faulkner was standing over Saini&rsquo;s body with the hammer when the cops came to the scene, reports say.&nbsp;
According to his family, Saini moved to the US to pursue a master&rsquo;s degree in business administration after completing his B Tech in computer science at Chandigarh University. He had recently graduated from Alabama University as well.
His family described Saini as a brilliant student who wanted a decent job to support himself and his family. According to reports, his body has come back to India, and his last rites have been completed.

Varun Raj Pucha, the 24-year-old Indian student who was stabbed at a fitness centre in the US state of Indiana, has succumbed to his injuries, the university where he was studying has said.
Varun, a Computer Science student at Valparaiso University, was stabbed in the head with a knife by the assailant Jordan Andrade, 24, at the public gym on October 29 for reasons that the authorities are still investigating.
&ldquo;It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Varun Raj Pucha. Our campus community has lost one of its own, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Varun&rsquo;s family and friends as we mourn this devastating loss,&rdquo; Valparaiso University, a private university in Valparaiso, Indian, near Chicago said in a statement on Wednesday.
Following the incident, the attacker was arrested and is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.
&ldquo;The university continues to be in contact with Varun&rsquo;s family, and we will continue to offer assistance and support wherever possible as they navigate this extremely difficult time. We ask that you join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers,&rdquo; the university said.
A service of remembrance and memorial for Varun is being planned on campus for November 16.
&ldquo;Our university gives the family and friends of Varun Raj Pucha our deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with his family, and we pray for their healing,&rdquo; said the university.
Varun had been pursuing an MS in Computer Science and left for the US in August 2022. He was expected to return home (Telangana's Khammam) after completion of his course next year.
His cousin told ABC7 Chicago that his condition did not improve after the incident.
He only had movement on one side of his body and remained unconscious at a hospital in Fort Wayne before his death.
Anile Balleboyne is one of just a couple of relatives the student had in the US as his parents and the rest of the family are in India. She said he came to Indiana about a year and a half ago in hopes of getting a good education.
"It's very difficult because no one would expect this kind of situation for their kids. He has many dreams. He came with many dreams, to financially and emotionally support his family," Balleboyne said.
By Wednesday, the North American Telugu Society had raised USD 90,000 through GoFundMe for Varun's family.
