Panic gripped passengers aboard the Hassan&ndash;Solapur Superfast Express after dense smoke billowed from one of its coaches early on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 5:45 am near Marathur village in Kalaburagi district, when train number 11312 was en route to Solapur, railway sources said.
According to railway officials, thick smoke was seen coming from the brake binding of the fourth coach due to a technical fault.
Alert railway staff at Marathur noticed the issue and immediately signalled to stop the train.
As the train came to a halt, anxious passengers hurriedly exited with their luggage, fearing a fire. However, railway personnel quickly addressed the issue, preventing casualties and damage.
Authorities have initiated a technical inspection to ascertain the cause of the malfunction.&nbsp;

Indian Railways mandates Aadhaar verification for Tatkal ticket bookings from July 2025. Additional OTP security enhances the process.

From July 2025, Tatkal ticket bookings will require Aadhaar verification to ensure transparency, with an added OTP layer for security.

Only Aadhar authenticated users will be able to book tickets under the Tatkal scheme from July 1, 2025, onwards, the Railway Ministry said in an announcement.
In a circular dated June 10, 2025, the ministry informed all zones that this decision was made "to ensure that the benefits of the Tatkal Scheme are received by the common end users." "With effect from 01-07-2025, tickets under Tatkal scheme can be booked through the website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)/ its app only by Aadhaar authenticated users," the ministry said.
Subsequently, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication shall also be made compulsory for Tatkal bookings from July 15, 2025, onwards.
"Tatkal tickets shall be available for booking through computerized PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters of Indian Railways/authorized agents only after authentication of a system-generated OTP, which shall be sent through the system on the mobile number furnished by the users at the time of booking. This shall also be implemented by 15/07/2025," the circular further stated. The circular also specified that authorized ticketing agents of the Indian Railways will not be permitted to book opening day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal booking window. Specifically, they will be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets for air-conditioned classes from 10.00 am to 10.30 am and for non-air-conditioned classes from 11.00 am to 11.30 am.
The ministry has directed the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC to make the necessary modifications to the system and communicate these changes to all zonal railways.
Furthermore, the circular assured that wide publicity will be given to these modifications through all available means to inform the general public.

India's government approves railway projects with Rs 18,658 crore investment, adding 1,247 km to bolster efficiency and connectivity.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved four projects of the Ministry of Railways involving a total cost of about Rs 18,658 crore, a government press note said.
The four projects covering 15 districts in 3 states of Maharashtra, Odisha and Chhattisgarh will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 1,247 km, it added.
The four projects include the third and fourth lines between Sambalpur and Jarapda, and Jharsuguda and Sason; the fifth and sixth lines between Kharsia-Naya Raipur and Parmalkasa; and the doubling of line between Gondia and Balharshah.
"The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. These multi-tracking proposals will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways," the press note said.
It added, "The projects are in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji's Vision of a New India which will make people of the region 'Atmanirbhar' by way of comprehensive development in the area which will enhance their employment/ self-employment opportunities."
According to the government, these projects are the result of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which was made possible through integrated planning to provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.
Highlighting their benefits, the government said with these projects, 19 new stations will be constructed, enhancing connectivity to two aspirational districts such as Gadchiroli and Rajnandgaon besides enhancing connectivity to approximately 3,350 villages and about 47.25 lakh population.
"Kharsia&ndash;Naya Raipur&ndash;Parmalkasa will provide direct connectivity to new areas such as Baloda Bazar, this will create possibilities for setting up of new industrial units including cement plants in the region," the press note said.
It further said, "These are essential routes for the transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, limestone etc. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 88.77 MTPA (million tonnes per annum)."
Talking about its environmental benefits, the government said the Railways being an environment-friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, it will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics cost of the country, reducing oil import (95 crore litres) and lowering CO2 emissions (477 crore kg), which is equivalent to planting 19 crore trees.&nbsp;

A passenger travelling from Patna to Delhi with her family on the Brahmaputra express posted on X complaining that she was charged an inflated price for a meal on the train.&nbsp;
'Dear @IRCTCofficial I was travelling from Patna to Delhi In Brahmaputra exp train no 15658 coach M2 (8dec) with my family. We had a total of 10 seats. We ordered dinner. The IRCTC dinner person told us the price of veg thali to be ₹150. We clearly told him we will need the bill,' the passenger who goes by the name Ruchi Kokcha on X tweeted.&nbsp;
She then went on to write that when the train staff came back he had divided the bill into two sections - the price of veg thali was Rs 80 and the paneer was billed at Rs 70.&nbsp;
'When he brought the bill he bifurcated the amount into two components veg thali- ₹80 + paneer sabji ₹70 =₹150. We asked him to make the bill only for veg thali as we ordered just that. He kept arguing with us for an hour that this is how the bill is prepared. After an hour his official came and said he can&rsquo;t give the promised bill. They gave us bill for veg thali ₹80 and said &ldquo;aap itna hi pay kar do&rdquo;.'
Ruchi tagged the railways minister and Indian Railways in her tweet.&nbsp;
'Clearly the staff is looting the public by giving the meal overpriced and then adding other components to the bill. Please look into this as this kind of behaviour is tarnishing the image of Indian Railways. @RailMinIndia @IndianRailMedia.'
IRCTC replied to her complaint and said 'Ma'am, thanks for highlighting the matter it is viewed seriously. A hefty penalty has been imposed on service provider . Also, the concerned licensee staff involved in overcharging has been deboarded.'
