India captain Shubman Gill was on Wednesday named among the three nominees for ICC&rsquo;s Player of the Month award for July along with South Africa&rsquo;s Wiaan Mulder and England skipper Ben Stokes.
Gill led India remarkably in the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England as his young side emerged with a hard-fought 2-2 draw, a series in which the 25-year-old rewrote batting records.
Gill scored 754 runs in the series against England with four centuries, including a double ton at 75.40 to break legendary Sunil Gavaskar&rsquo;s record (732) for the highest run tally for an Indian captain in a five-Test series.
Gill&rsquo;s returns are now also the second-best behind Sir Donald Bradman (810 runs) in the all-time list for captains.
&ldquo;Shubman Gill had a sensational month, amassing 567 runs at an impeccable average of 94.50 in three Tests during India&rsquo;s gripping series in England,&rdquo; the ICC wrote on its website.
&ldquo;He played a starring role in India&rsquo;s record-breaking win at Edgbaston, where he scored a monumental 269 in the first innings followed by 161 in the second. His combined 430 runs across the two innings is the second highest tally, next only to Graham Gooch&rsquo;s 456,&rdquo; it added.
The ICC said Gill carried the baton from &ldquo;all-time great&rdquo; Virat Kohli at No.4.
&ldquo;His consistency at No. 4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series,&rdquo; it said.
In his maiden outing as South Africa captain, Mulder struck a mammoth 367 not out against Zimbabwe but declared his team&rsquo;s innings when he could have broken legendary Brian Lara&rsquo;s record for highest individual total of 400 not out against England in 2004.
The ICC said, &ldquo;He scored 531 runs across the two matches at an astonishing average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the second innings of the first Test." &ldquo;However, his standout act came in the second Test at Bulawayo, where he smashed an unbeaten 367 in his maiden outing as South Africa&rsquo;s Test skipper &mdash; the highest individual score in South African Test history.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Mulder also chipped in with the ball, claiming seven wickets at just 15.28 apiece, including a four-wicket haul in the first Test,&rdquo; it added.
The ICC lauded Stokes for his all-round show against India saying, &ldquo;He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33, delivering in high-pressure situations with both bat and ball."
&ldquo;His leadership proved crucial in maintaining England&rsquo;s intensity and belief in a closely contested series. With ball in hand, he bowled long spells, often breaking key partnerships and turning the tide in England&rsquo;s favour,&rdquo; it added.

With England requiring 35 runs on the last day with four wickets in hand, a charged up Siraj, who was adjudged 'Player of the Match', accounted for three batters including the last dismissal of Gus Atkinson, to earn India a remarkable win.
Siraj's best ICC ranking so far had been a 16th position that he reached in January last year.
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who played three Tests to manage his workload, continues to lead the charts with 889 points.
Prasidh Krishna also attained a career-best 59th position after he along with Siraj became only the second India pair to take four or more wickets each in both innings of a Test, a feat earlier accomplished by spinners Bishan Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna against Australia in Delhi in 1969.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the top-5 in the Test batting rankings following his second century in the series at The Oval.
Jaiswal rose three spots and is on 792 points, while the only other India batter in the top-10 is Rishabh Pant, who has slipped one spot to eighth as he could not play the fifth Test due to a foot injury.
Charismatic England batter Joe Root has firmed up his position at the top with his third century in as many matches, while Harry Brook's 98-ball 111 has helped him claw back to second position.

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had retired hurt on the first day of the drawn fourth Test at Manchester but returned to bat the next day despite scans confirming a fracture in his right foot.

"For five Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him," added the former skipper.
The 76-year-old said workload management cannot come in the way of fielding the best available team.
"If you are going to succumb to people who are talking about workload, then you are never going to have your best players on the field for your country," he said.
"I hope that the word &lsquo;workload&rsquo; goes out of the Indian cricket dictionary. I've been saying that for a long time... And I think that is the one thing that we all should keep in mind that this workload is only a mental thing, not so much a physical thing," he added.

Siraj and Prasidh Krishna (4/126) sizzled with the ball when their team needed them the most.
Siraj was elated after a big-hearted effort. "I always believe in myself, that I can pull off a win from any situation," he told the broadcaster.
Down with a shoulder injury and his left-arm in a sling, Chris Woakes came at number 11 and battled tremendous pain while he was in the middle.

An epic 195-run stand off 211 balls between Brook and Root took the wind out India&rsquo;s sails as England coasted to 317 for four at tea, needing another 57 runs for the series sealing victory.
It was the second hundred of the series for Brook (111 off 98), who displayed special ball striking abilities under extreme pressure. He made most of a life given on on 19 when Mohammed Siraj stumbled to the boundary ropes after taking his catch off Prasidh Krishna.
The three Indian pacers could not much out of the pitch with a softer ball and the two spinners Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja too proved ineffective although to be fair to them they weren't given lengthy spells. The new ball is still 14 overs away and the game would be as good as over by then if England continue marching towards their goal.
The short ball tactic was also employed but the carry off the old ball was comfortably negotiated by Brook and Root.

Having dismissed Zak Crawley on the last ball of the day three, Siraj started the proceedings alongside Akash Deep. Like the first innings, Siraj put his hand up and produced a fiery spell where he troubled Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope.
However, it was Prasidh Krishna who provided the opening breakthrough of the day when he drew Duckett into the drive and had him caught at second slip on what was his fourth ball of the morning.
Siraj too was rewarded for his relentless approach when he trapped Pope in front for the second time in the game with a sharp nip backer off a wobbled seam. Pope had just found his groove, having collected three fours off Prasidh before being dismissed in the following over.
Root looked solid in the middle and executed two regal cover drives off Siraj.
Harry Brook was his usual attacking self and was handed a reprieve when Siraj caught him at fine leg off Prasidh but ended up stepping on the ropes to concede six runs.
Before that, Brook stepped out to Akash Deep and dispatched him for a six over cover.
Like Siraj, Prasidh also bowled eight overs on the trot, giving his all on potentially the final day of a grueling five match series.
England resumed the day at 50 for one, needing another 324 runs for an improbable win.
Prior to this game, the highest chase at this ground was 263 achieved by England back in 1902.

"England seamer Chris Woakes will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the Rothesay Fifth Test at The Kia Oval, following a left shoulder injury sustained on day one of the match against India," the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.
"At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. A further assessment will be conducted at the conclusion of the series." Earlier on Thursday, Woakes teammate Gus Atkinson said Woakes' injury didn't look good.
"I don't know too much about it, but it doesn't look great," Atkinson said after India reached 204 for 6 at stumps on the rain-affected day.
"It's a big shame, last game of the series, and when anyone gets injured, it's a shame. I'm hoping it's not too bad, and whatever it is, he'll get full support from everyone." Woakes bowled 14 overs on the opening day, picking up the crucial wicket of KL Rahul and conceded 46 runs.
Woakes' injury has added to the woes of England, who are missing several key players, including captain Ben Stokes.

Karun Nair made a potential career-saving half-century on a green top even as the other batters faltered to leave India on 204 for six at stumps on a rain-hit opening day of the series deciding fifth Test against England at The Oval in London on Thursday.
Coming back into the side after being dropped for the fourth Test, Nair (52 batting off 98 balls) delivered under pressure and in testing conditions with the ball seaming around through the day. He was batting alongside Washington Sundar (19 batting off 45) at close of play.
Rain halted proceedings twice but still 64 overs were accommodated through an extended evening session that lasted till 7.30 pm local time.
The visitors lost three wickets in the third session including the well-set Sai Sudharsan (38 off 108) and the in-form Ravindra Jadeja (9 off 13), as both could not do much about the balls from Josh Tongue that seamed away to take the outside edge.
Playing his first Test of the series, Gus Atkinson impressed with a couple of wickets. Barring Atkinson, Tongue and Jamie Overton were guilty of bowling too many loose balls.
Chris Woakes, the only pacer alongside Mohammed Siraj, to play all five Tests injured his shoulder while fielding towards close of play, forcing him off the field and rendering his participation in the game doubtful.
Nair, who played his first Test in eight years at Leeds, was finally able to convert a start and considering the conditions, his unbeaten fifty is worth its weight in gold. Nair completed his milestone with a couple off left-arm spinner Jacob Bethell in the final half hour of play.
A sublime cover drive off Tongue in the 38th over was among the seven fours that came from Nair's bat.
Earlier, India lost their captain Shubman Gill due to a suicidal run out as intermittent rain allowed only six overs in the second session.
When rain returned to The Oval to halt the proceedings, India were 85 for three with Sai Sudharsan (28 batting off 84) and Karun Nair (0 off 8) in the middle.
Gill (21 off 35) played a copybook cover drive off Jamie Overton to get going after the break.
Having done all the hard work, Gill went for a suicidal single off Gus Atkinson who picked up the ball on the follow through and darted it into the stumps, leaving the Indian captain way out of his crease.
However, during his stay in the middle Gill has surpassed Sunil Gavaskar to become the Indian captain with the most runs in a single Test series. Gill has so far accumulated 733 runs in the series with one more innings to go, while Gavaskar's previous record of 732 runs came against the West Indies in 1978-79.
Soon after, the rain returned resulting in the umpire taking the tea break at 4.10 pm local time.
In the morning session, India lost their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (2 off 9) and K L Rahul (14 off 40) on a green top but did well to reach lunch 72 for two.
On the greenest pitch of the series, the ball expectedly did seam around but it was not swinging profusely.
Atkinson struck in his second over by having Jaiswal trapped in front. The on-field umpire did not give it out but England reviewed successfully with the incoming ball going on to hit the stumps.
The other pacers Tongue and Overton struggled for control. Tongue conceded 12 runs in his opening over including 10 via two wides on either side of the stumps.
Rahul, who has been India's most solid batter over the course of the series, was the second wicket to fall. The short ball from Woakes did not do much but Rahul went for the cut when it was too close to his body, eventually playing on to his stumps.
Number three Sudharsan and Gill then batted till lunch which was taken early due to a sudden downpour at The Oval.
Sai collected two fours down the ground off Tongue and Woakes respectively.
India's leading run getter Gill punched Overton through the cover before using the short arm pull off the pacer for boundaries on either side of the wicket.&nbsp;

Stokes, the inspirational skipper who pushed the limits of his body while bowling in the last two Tests, was ruled out with a muscle tear on his right shoulder while comeback man Archer was rested after the workload of playing in back-to-back matches.
Pacer Brydon Carse and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson have also been rested.
There are players whose mere presence makes a difference and the England skipper, a world class all-rounder with 304 runs and 17 wickets in the series, is one such character.
What the English team will miss most at The Oval is his inspirational presence when the chips are down and showing the way how it is done.
Stand-in captain Ollie Pope will have his task cut out as the Indian team, even without Jasprit Bumrah, is expected to go for the kill.
The series, played in front of packed crowds, has also been a perfect advert for Test cricket with all four games stretching to the final session on day five.
Not to forget the skirmishes along the way that have spiced it up enough for the fans of the game's traditional format.
From Shubman Gill's tirade against Zak Crawley for "deliberately" wasting time at Lord's to Ravindra Jadeja refusing to call off proceedings on the final day at Old Trafford, things couldn't have gotten hotter before the series entered the final phase in sweltering London.
Gautam Gambhir, who is always up for a scrap, has only intensified it with his altercation with Oval curator Lee Fortis two days before the game.
In this backdrop, expect the series finale to go down to the wire as India under the ever-improving Gill has a chance to land a killer blow on an English team whose bowling attack will undergo a sea-change with no specialist spinner in the playing XI.
Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton, the two Surrey players, who know The Oval track like the back of their palms, will be joining forces with Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue to make it a four-pronged attack.
With Woakes being the only bowler who has remained constant from first to fifth Test, England are giving indications of continuing with their Bazball way, having inducted a specialist heavy duty hitter in Jacob Bethell.
History beckons Gill
In his first series as captain of a team undergoing a major transition, Gill has led from the front and with 722 runs so far, he is only 52 shy off Sunil Gavaskar's record of most runs by an Indian in a single rubber.
He needs another 11 runs to surpass Gavaskar's record of most runs (732) by an Indian captain in a Test series (1978-79 vs West Indies).
The 25-year-old has come of age with four hundreds thus far including a double century and a match-saving 103 in the previous Test at Old Trafford. After low returns in three innings, Gill played the most defining knock of his career in Manchester to enhance his reputation, not just as a batter but also as a captain.
Having played a massive role in earning a famous draw from an almost hopeless situation, Gill and his team go into the match with momentum on their side but gaps to fill.
With 511 runs, K L Rahul has been a model of consistency at the top of the order but more will be expected from Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Sai Sudharsan on what is generally a decent batting surface.
Team Combination 
In injured Rishabh Pant's absence, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to round up the top six following unbeaten hundreds, which denied England a victory in the fourth Test.
The Indian management firmly believes in having a batting option till number eight and that could possibly lead to Kuldeep Yadav being once again left out of the XI despite constant calls for his inclusion over the course of a long and gruelling series.
Dhruv Jurel will keep the wickets and could bat at seven in Pant's absence and Shardul Thakur might retain his place at eight despite not exactly enjoying the confidence of his skipper.
Going by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak's comments ahead of the fifth Test, India will retain the template that has been followed thus far.
"Overall, if you play with 6 bowlers, then some bowlers will under-bowl. So, if that 6th bowler is an all-rounder, then you know that he will contribute in batting and in bowling as well," Kotak said.
On the bowling front, Akash Deep is expected to replace Jasprit Bumrah in the XI with the latter advised to not push his body.
Mohammed Siraj will be the leader of the attack and the third pacer's spot will go to either Prasidh Krishna or Arshdeep Singh, who has patiently been waiting for his Test debut.
Surrey amassed more than 800 runs in the last County game played here but it remains to be seen how the pitch behaves during the high-stakes clash.

Stokes, who has led the team from the front and has claimed 17 wickets while scoring some vital runs with bat, will miss out on the game at The Oval due to a shoulder injury, while Archer has been rested after having made his return to Test cricket following a long gap of four years.
Pacer Brydon Carse will also miss the final Test, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a press release on Wednesday.

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja on Wednesday stretched his lead to consolidate as the world No 1 all-rounder in Test cricket, while Abhishek Sharma rose to the top spot in the T20 format for the first time.
In the latest ICC Men's Test Player Rankings, Jadeja stretched his lead by 117 rating points from the second-placed Mehidy Hasan Miraz of Bangladesh, getting to a total of 422 points.
On the other hand, Travis Head's year-long reign at the top ended after he missed the five-match series in the Caribbean which Australia won 5-0, following which India opener Sharma moved up to the No 1 spot in T20s.
The left-handed Sharma now has 829 rating points while Head is now second with 814 points.
"Jadeja has inflated his lead at the top of the rankings for all-rounders after grabbing four wickets and scoring a fighting 107 not out," the ICC said in statement on its website.
"He has added 13 rating points and is now on an aggregate of 422, 117 rating points clear of Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan. He has also moved up five places to 29th among batters and up one place to 14th among bowlers," it added.
Washington Sundar also moved up eight places to get to 65th after his maiden Test century and a 203-run defiant stand with Jadeja for the fifth wicket, which ensured a remarkable draw in the fourth Test at Manchester.
"Sundar has also moved up eight positions to joint-13th among all-rounders, having also taken two wickets in the match," the ICC said.
While Joe Root also extended his lead by 37 points as the top ranked batter in Tests from the second placed Kane Williamson, England captain Ben Stokes moved up three places to get to the third spot among all-rounders which is also his highest ranking since December 2022.
Root struck a fine 150 in England's only innings at Manchester while Stokes recorded a five-for and also made a valuable 141.
England bowlers Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes also made gains in the latest rankings. "The Test bowling rankings see fast bowler Jofra Archer continue his impressive return after four years, his haul of three for 73 lifting him 38 places to 63rd position," the ICC said.
"Chris Woakes is up one place to 23rd after finishing with three wickets in the match, which included a double-strike early in the Indian second innings," it added.
England's Ben Duckett moved up five places to get to 10th, Zak Crawley reached 43rd and Ollie Pope got to the 24th, the ICC informed.
The conclusion of the T20I series between Australia and the West Indies saw wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis breaking into top 10.
"Josh Inglis's 172 runs in the five-match series, including two half-centuries, has helped him up six places to ninth position, while Tim David (up 12 places to 18th) and Cameron Green (up 64 places to 24th) have attained career-bests," the ICC said.
"For the West Indies, Brandon King is up nine places to joint-21st," it added.

The report added that Akash Deep, who missed the fourth Test due to a groin niggle, is likely to replace Bumrah in the XI.
Earlier, head coach Gautam Gambhir had stated that no decision had been taken regarding team composition and that all bowlers, including Bumrah, were fit.

England piled up a massive 669 in response to India's 358, taking a 311-run first-innings lead at the fourth Test.
However, India mounted a remarkable fightback from 0 for 2, batting 143 overs in the second innings with centuries from captain Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Ravindra Jadeja to earn a dramatic draw and stay alive in the five-match series, trailing 1-2.
Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the first innings of the fourth Test -- the most he has bowled in a single innings -- but returned figures of 2 for 103, the first time he conceded over 100 runs in a Test innings.
The number of deliveries he bowled over 140kph dropped significantly over the series -- from 42.7% at Headingley, to 22.3% at Lord&rsquo;s, and just 0.5% at Old Trafford.
Despite his dip in effectiveness, Bumrah remains the joint highest wicket-taker for India in the series alongside Mohammed Siraj, with 14 wickets to his credit.

The Oval will host the fifth and final Test between India and England from Thursday, and the Indian team has hit the ground running two days after staging a remarkable comeback to draw the fourth match in Manchester.

During the training session, videos that have now gone viral on social media clearly showed an upset Gambhir getting into a verbal altercation with the curator, prompting India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak to intervene and douse the situation.
The tiff started when Fortis told Gambhir: "I will have to report this" and to that the Indian head coach replied rather tersely: "You go and report whatever you want to report." Kotak stepped in at this point, took the Englishman to a different corner and said: "We won't damage anything." Other Indian support staff such as bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate were seen listening keenly to the argument.
While it was not clear why the two got into an argument, Gambhir and Fortis appeared to be arguing over the conditions of the pitches for practice.
However, Gambhir turned back again to tell Fortis that he should not be telling his side "what to do." "You can't tell us what to do. You are just one of the groundsmen, nothing beyond," Gambhir was seen telling in the video.
Fortis and Gambhir then went their separate ways, with the India coach returning to oversee the net session.
Later while walking from the field to his room, Fortis said: "It's a big game, and he (Gambhir) is a bit touchy." Meanwhile Sai Sudharsan, who registered a half-century and a duck in the Manchester Test, was the first one to arrive at the venue for practice, where left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav was also seen putting in some hard yards.
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh too was seen bowling under the watchful eyes of Morkel.

Gambhir was addressing a gathering at the India House on Monday evening to express gratitude for the fans&rsquo; support during the course of the series, which saw the visitors pull off a dramatic draw in the fourth Test at Manchester.
&ldquo;Touring this part of the world has always been challenging because of the history between the two countries, which can never be forgotten,&rdquo; said Gambhir during his speech.
&ldquo;Whenever we have toured the UK, the kind of support we have got, we cherish every bit of it. We never take anything for granted.
&ldquo;Last five weeks have been really exciting for both countries with the kind of cricket that has been on display, which I&rsquo;m sure has made every cricket lover proud,&rdquo; he added.
The Indian cricket team received a rousing welcome from community leaders, parliamentarians and sports fans at a diaspora reception hosted by the High Commission of India in London, where the squad is set for the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval from Thursday.
He went on to highlight the importance of the fifth and final Test, which India needed to win to level the series that now stands 2-1 in favour of England.
&ldquo;Both the teams have thrown a lot of punches and have fought for every inch. We have got one more week to go, one final push to make and one more opportunity to make our country and people out here proud,&rdquo; said Gambhir.
The players were cheered enthusiastically by the crowd as some of the highlights from their recent games were played out on screen.
Vikram Doraiswami, India&rsquo;s High Commissioner to the UK, said the fighting spirit the team showed during the series was a just reflection of the country&rsquo;s will to fight the odds.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s been a great series, played in the best of spirit. But the best bit of it all is the fact that we have a chance to see Test cricket played the way it is intended to be &ndash; contests for full five days, contests that have gone to the wire, contests in which the great sense of cricket as a game that is played with intensity for five days.
&ldquo;And to have our team here display what is truly the range of skills but also the fighting spirit that is now associated with Team India is also a great reflection of the fighting spirit that now stands for the new India that we are all privileged to represent here,&rdquo; said Doraiswami.
&ldquo;No matter what happens (in the final Test), we couldn&rsquo;t be more proud of who you (Team India) are, what you represent, where you came from and what you mean to all of us,&rdquo; he said.
Richard Gould, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), referenced the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed off during Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s UK visit last week as a sign of the immense scope of collaboration between the two nations, including sports.
&ldquo;In four Test matches so far, every one of them has gone deep into the fifth day&hellip;It&rsquo;s difficult to remember a Test series that has really resounded as deeply as this one has, both in England and back in India, and we are all really looking forward to seeing the battle recommence at The Oval on Thursday,&rdquo; said Gould.
The diaspora gathering concluded with a brief in-conversation session moderated by commentator and former head coach Ravi Shastri with a few players including captain Shubman Gill.
&ldquo;Before the start of the series, I felt I haven&rsquo;t really shown my best and I was working quite hard on my game before the series as I wanted to prove myself,&rdquo; said Gill, with reference to his over 700 runs notched up during the series so far.

Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja batted out more than two sessions to bring back India from the brink of a decisive defeat and pull off a draw for the ages at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday, keeping the intensely fought series well and truly alive heading into the finale at The Oval.
Having conceded a 311-run lead and lost their openers for duck in the second innings, India displayed a steely resolve to get a favourable result largely due to the efforts of captain Shubman Gill (103 off 238), K L Rahul (90 off 230), Jadeja (107 not out off 185) and Washington (101 not out off 206).
With inspirational England skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer removing a well set Gill and Rahul in the morning, England sensed a series sealing victory but Jadeja and Washington hung in there before milking the bowlers towards the end of the day.
Just before the start of last hour of play, Ben Stokes expressed his desire to end the game but India decided to carry on with Washington and Jadeja closing in on deserving hundreds. Stokes was clearly not amused.
Harry Brook started to offer freebies to Jadeja and Washington as a sign of disapproval for India&rsquo;s decision to carry on playing. Players finally shook hands after the milestones of Jadeja and Washington were achieved with the latter scoring his maiden Test hundred.
The day five track did not have many demons with prominent movement and a bit of variable bounce was visible in the morning session when Gill and Rahul got out after a 188-run stand.
Considering the match situation, the dogged resistance from the two India left-handers in the second and final session was reminiscent of R Ashwin and Hamuna Vihari&rsquo;s match saving stand in the Sydney Test of 2021.
Nursing a broken foot, Rishabh Pant was available to bat in the second innings but he did not need to come to the middle and risk aggravation of his injury.
Strikingly, it was England&rsquo;s only second draw in the 40 Tests played in the Bazball era with the last one coming also at Old Trafford during the 2023 Ashes (weather was the main factor behind the draw).
The surface here has been on the drier side through the domestic season with four games producing as many draws.
With both sides struggling to keep their fast bowlers fit in a long and gruelling series, it would be interesting how many of the first choice pacers take part in the fifth Test beginning in London from July 31.
At tea, India were 322 for four after collecting 99 runs from a wicketless afternoon session.
Stokes, who looked lethal in his eight over spell in the morning, could not keep up the intensity in the three overs he bowled in the second session.
In a 15-run over from Stokes, Washington pulled the England captain for a six and four to bring up his fifty before Jadeja employed the cut to complete his fifth half-century in six innings.
What made England&rsquo;s life difficult is that left-arm spinner Liam Dawson was not able to challenge the Indian left-handers enough while Archer too get could not get a breakthrough post lunch. Dawson failed to use the rough created outside the left-hander's off-stump.
In the morning session, Gill completed a gutsy hundred after Stokes battled through pain to dismiss a well set K L Rahul, leaving India at 223 for four at lunch.
Resuming the day at 174 for two with a deficit of 137, India remained on course to draw the game courtesy a fighting effort from Gill, who brought up his fourth century of the series. The Indian captain fell at the stroke of lunch with the visitors still trailing England by 88 runs.
Considering India&rsquo;s backs against the walls and series on the line, this could be Gill&rsquo;s most defining century if India managed to save the match and keep the series alive.
Expecting the ball to come back in, Gill felt for the one from Jofra Archer that shaped away, getting a faint outside edge.
The 188-run marathon stand between Gill and Rahul (90 off 230) was finally broken when the latter was trapped in front by Stokes with a ball that kept a tad low from length.
Soon after, Stokes got one jump to sharply from a similar length that foxed Rahul, leaving the Indian skipper in a lot of pain.
The rising ball first crashed into Gill&rsquo;s right thumb before taking a piece of his helmet.
It was remarkable that Stokes, who was not fit enough to bowl on day four, managed an eight-over spell on day five despite discomfort in his right shoulder and hamstring. Like at Lord&rsquo;s, he did not care much about his injury prone body to help the team&rsquo;s cause.
The new ball was taken after the 80th over and resulted in the wicket of Gill. Jadeja too would have be gone first ball but Joe Root could not hold on to a tough chance at first slip off Archer.&nbsp;

Pant sensationally smashed a slower ball from Jofra Archer for a six between mid-wicket and square leg before driving Ben Stokes from the crease for a boundary through cover for a memorable half-century, drawing a standing ovation from a packed stadium.
When Archer finally found Pant&rsquo;s stumps with a peach, the significance of Pant&rsquo;s courageous knock was not lost even on the opposition with Joe Root patting the Indian for his valiant effort.
Stokes had Kamboj caught behind to complete his five-wicket haul.
In the morning session, Pant remarkably came out to bat with a fractured foot while Shardul showed plenty of resolve to take India to 321 for six at lunch.
Resuming the day at 264 for four, India did well to cross the 300-run mark in overcast conditions that offered plenty of seam and swing to the England pacers especially Jofra Archer, who was effectively unplayable for majority of his opening spell.
England Ben Stokes got the odd ball to jump from length, creating more challenges for the Indian batters.
Chris Woakes took the new ball immediately but it was in following over from Archer that England got the early breakthrough.
The in-form Ravindra Jadeja (20 off 40) could not do much off an Archer beauty that shaped away after landing on the leg-stump to take the outside edge with Harry Brook holding on to a low catch at second slip.
With the ball doing all sorts of tricks, Shardul (41 off 88 ) looked to attack and dispatched Woakes off the backfoot in the cover region for a fine boundary.
Minutes later, Shardul creamed a full ball from Stokes through the cover a ball after getting a snorter from the England captain that almost kissed his glove.
Stokes managed to get rid of Indian all-rounder eventually by luring him into the drive and getting his caught at gully by Ben Duckett, who pouched the flying ball.
Much to the shock of everyone present at the ground, Pant limped out to bat following Shardul&rsquo;s fall. A standing ovation followed.
Despite a broken right foot, Pant made a courageous call to face the England pacers. He could barely complete his singles but the fact that he was in the centre said a lot about his grit and character.
Early lunch was taken when light rain returned to Old Trafford in fading light.
