Construction workers in Manipur&rsquo;s Imphal West district discovered relics believed to be from World War II, including shells and a grenade, likely left behind during the 1944 Battle of Imphal.

Relics believed to be from World War 2 were found by construction workers in Manipur's Imphal West district on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The items were discovered four feet underground while digging was underway for construction work in Langthabal, they said.
A large number of rusted empty cases, water bottles, a grenade, shells, spades, and rusted tin cans were among the items recovered from the site, they added.
The items are believed to have been left behind by soldiers of Allied forces, fighting the Battle of Imphal in 1944. There was a camp of the Allied forces at Canchipur hills near the area, officials said.
Forces of Imperial Japan had surrounded the hills of Manipur but could not overrun the camps of the Allied military in the Imphal Valley.
The Battle of Imphal and the Battle of Kohima, involving Imperial Japan, Azad Hind Fauj and Allied forces, are considered one of the decisive engagements of the War.
The Battle of Imphal saw a significant victory for Allied troops that stopped the Japanese advance into the then British India.
More than 54,000 Japanese troops were killed or wounded, while more than 12,000 Allied soldiers died or injured in the Battle of Imphal.

However, the Kuki families alleged that they were forcibly evicted from their residences in the New Lambulane area to Motbung.

Security officials in Imphal, which is predominantly inhabited by the Meitei community, allegedly forced twenty-four Kuki residents out of their homes, citing concerns for their safety on the night of Sept 1, Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;
Several Kuki families living in Imphal valley moved out of the area following the May 3 ethnic clashes. In a similar move, Meiteis residing in Kuki dominated localities shifted to different areas in view of their safety.&nbsp;
S Prim Vaiphei, one of the volunteers guarding the Kuki locality in the heart of Imphal, said that a "team of uniformed armed personnel claiming to be acting under directions from the Home Department came to New Lambulane, Imphal in the intervening night of September 1 and 2 and forcibly evicted the last remaining residents of the Kuki locality in Imphal from their homes".
Expressing strong displeasure over the "forcible eviction", Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body of the Kuki tribes, in two statements, said, they stood "aghast at the dastardly attack against the last of the Kuki Zo volunteers (numbering about 24 men) who have been guarding the houses and properties of the Kukis at New Lambulane. The volunteers were later escorted by security personnel".
Meanwhile, an official said, these families were taken to the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district on the northern side of Imphal Valley early on Saturday, as they had become "vulnerable targets",

Officials reportedly said that it was not clear whether the cause of the blast was a grenade or an improvised explosive device (IED).
