The R City store, spanning 70,000 square feet, was introduced in June 2022 as part of Ikea's initiative to establish smaller-format stores. However, limitations in layout, design, and location have hindered the company's ability to deliver the complete Ikea experience to its patrons.
In response to the closure, Ikea emphasized its commitment to the Mumbai market, highlighting plans to focus on expanding its presence through various channels. This includes bolstering operations at its Worli store, along with further development at its Navi Mumbai location, which boasts a sprawling 5 lakh square feet of retail space.
Acknowledging the evolving retail landscape, Ikea underscored the importance of adapting to meet customer expectations. The closure of the R City store aligns with the company's vision of maintaining a leaner and more agile retail business while prioritizing its long-term growth strategy in India.
Employees affected by the closure will be offered opportunities for reassignment within Mumbai or other markets, ensuring a smooth transition for the workforce. The Ikea showroom in Hyderabad has landed in an alleged racial controversy after senior journalist Nitin Sethi tweeted that his wife, hailing from Manipur was frisked while others before were not. 
Sethi further alleged that the person who checked his wife's shopping bags, even sniggered at the fact that she had bought everything and didn't even care to reply when asked about why she was singled out.
"Racist treatment at @IKEAIndia store in Hyderabad. Only my wife, from Manipur got frisked for goods she bought. No one else before us. And then all supervisory staff came to defend the racism. Great show from an 'international store'.
Cheers to another usual day," Sethi tweeted on Sunday. "And the supervisors said, yeah call police if you want, we will deal. And it didn't end there. Daily racism that our people face," he said in another tweet.
Responding to Sethi's allegation, Ikea India in a tweet said it believes that equality is a human right and condemns all forms of racism.
"At IKEA, we believe that equality is a human right, and we condemn all forms of racism and prejudice. We regret the inconvenience caused to you while following the mandatory billing protocol," the Swedish furniture maker said.
As a process, customers who self-checkout are requested for a final check before leaving the store to ensure the billing is correct and customers do not face any problems regarding double charging, repeat scanning of products etc, Ikea further said in another tweet.
Senior Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday described the incident as "appalling" and asked IKEA to issue an apology. He also asked the international brand to educate, sensitise & train its staff to respect all customers graciously.
"This is appalling and absolutely unacceptable @IKEAIndia. Please ensure a proper apology is issued & more importantly educate, sensitise & train your staff to respect all your customers graciously. Hope you will make amends asap," Rama Rao tweeted.

IKEA India, the Swedish home furnishings retailer, said it will launch its first store in Bengaluru&nbsp;on June 22.
The large-format store will be connected to the Nagasandra metro station, it said in a statement.
IKEA India also announced Anje Heim as the Market Manager for the Karnataka market.
Heim said: &ldquo;IKEA aims to offer home furnishing solutions that match the aspirations and dreams of the many people of Bengaluru for a better everyday life. IKEA Nagasandra will serve as a one-stop destination for all your home furnishing requirements".
Spread over 12.2 acres, the 4,60,000 sq ft IKEA Nagasandra store will feature over 7,000-plus affordable, good quality, sustainable and well-designed home furnishing IKEA products, the statement said.
The store will also house one of the largest children's play 'area 'Sm&aring;land' along with a 1,000-seater restaurant and a bistro serving a mix of Swedish and Indian delicacies, it was stated.
IKEA started its e-commerce journey in Bengaluru, with a shopping website and an app in 2021.

Catering to the Gurgaon and Delhi National Capital Region’s growing population and built around the needs of the local community, the meeting place is expected to welcome more than 20 million people annually who will come to shop, work, eat, exercise, learn and socialise.
According to reports, IKEA had bought a plot in Gurugram for a shopping centre for which the construction would start in 2022. 
The company is expected to complete the centre, which will beside an IKEA store also house office space in late 2025. 
Ingka Centre, part of the Ingka Group which also includes IKEA Retail and Ingka Investments in February announced it had bought a plot in Noida on the outskirts of Delhi and planned to invest nearly 55 bn rupees in its first shopping centre in India, but now said the one in Gurugram would open before that.

The IKEA store in Italy won many hearts as a video shared on Facebook showed that the store opened its doors to stray dogs to keep them cozy in the winter months. In a bid to end usage of plastic, Ikea put its last single-use plastic straw on display in London's Design Museum. The Swedish chain aims to bring in a much broader change in consonance with the environment, banning plastic items from its shelves by 2020. The 'Last Straw' installation will be open to the public till Saturday, 6th of October. Ikea stores and restaurants in the UK and Ireland will end the use plastic straws this week.
