In a groundbreaking development, IIT Madras, with backing from the Ministry of Railways, has unveiled India's inaugural hyperloop test track, stretching 422 meters long. This innovation promises to revolutionize transportation, allowing travelers to cover 350 km in just 30 minutes. As such, the journey from Delhi to Jaipur, roughly 300 km, could be accomplished in under half an hour.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the exciting news on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the power of government-academia partnerships in pioneering futuristic transport solutions. "Government-academia collaboration is driving innovation in futuristic transportation," he noted.
The cutting-edge test track, funded by the Ministry of Railways, is situated on the IIT Madras campus. Minister Vaishnaw, buoyed by the development's success, remarked, "The first pod of 422 meters will go a long way in developing technologies. I think the time has come when, after the first two grants of one million dollars each, the third grant of one million dollars will be given to IIT Madras for further developing the hyperloop project."
Meanwhile, the Railways are gearing up to embark on their first commercial hyperloop project soon.
Understanding the hyperloop system
Dubbed the 'fifth mode of transport,' the Hyperloop is a high-speed system designed for long-distance travel. It utilizes special capsules within vacuum tubes, enabling trains to achieve remarkable speeds.
The innovation involves a pod that electromagnetically levitates inside a vacuum tube, minimizing both friction and air resistance. As a result, these pods can potentially reach speeds of up to Mach 1.0. To put that into perspective, Mach 1.0 is approximately 761 miles per hour at sea level.
An official press release highlights that the Hyperloop will offer numerous advantages, including immunity to adverse weather conditions, collision-free travel, speeds that double those of airplanes, as well as low power consumption and energy storage compatible with 24-hour operations.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has raised an amount of Rs 231 crore in funding from alumni, industry and individual donors during the financial year 2022-23. As per IIT-Madras, this is the highest amount of funding raised in one financial year by the institute for implementing socially-relevant projects.
Funding increased 76 per cent year-on-year (YoY) compared to Rs 131 crore in FY22, according to data shared by the institute. The number of donors contributing more than Rs 1 crore increased 64 per cent YoY. IIT Madras had raised Rs 101.2 crore in FY21.
&ldquo;Our benefactors enable us to build interdisciplinary Centres of Excellence focused on developing and deploying new technologies in socially-relevant realms like healthcare, climate change, energy, skill development, and agriculture. They also provide financial assistance to needy students through scholarships and fellowships,&rdquo; said Kaviraj Nair, Chief Executive Officer, Office of Institutional Advancement, IIT Madras. &ldquo;Alumni contribute to improving the overall infrastructure on the campus, such as the construction of innovation hubs, indoor sports complexes, or the purchase of electric buses for campus transportation. We also work extensively with our alumni to create a world-class startup ecosystem associated with IIT Madras,&rdquo; said Nair.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained the top spot among institutes in the country for the fifth consecutive year, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru was adjudged the best university and research institution, according to the Ministry of Education's National Institutional Ranking Framework.
The rankings were announced by Union Minister of State for Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh on Friday.
Seven IITs -- Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and Guwahati -- figured in the top 10 in the overall rankings.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which was ranked ninth last year, improved its ranking to sixth this year, while Jawaharlal Nehru University retained its tenth position in the overall category.
The ranking framework, now in its eighth edition, evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.
Ranks are assigned based on the total sum of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters.
In the universities category, IISc Bengaluru bagged the top spot, followed by JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia at the second and third ranks. The trio were in the same positions last year too.
Banaras Hindu University, which was ranked sixth last year in the category, improved its rank and bagged the fifth spot.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore, Calcutta University, Vellore Institute of Technology, Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Hyderabad bagged the subsequent positions in the universities category.
Eight IITs -- Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Hyderabad -- were in the top 10 ranks in the engineering institutions category.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirapalli slipped by one spot this year and bagged the ninth rank, while Jadavpur University made its entry in the top 10 in the category and bagged the 10th position.
Among colleges, Miranda House, Hindu College and Presidency College-Chennai retained the first and second and third positions.
IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore retained the first and second ranks respectively among the B-Schools in the country. IIM Calcutta, which was in the third spot last year, slipped to the fourth position while IIM Kozhikode bagged the third position.
In the pharmacy category, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad rose to the first spot from the second position while Jamia Hamdard which was in first position last year slipped to the second spot.
In the medical college category, AIIMS, Delhi bagged the top spot, followed by PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Vellore. The trio bagged the same positions last year.
Among the dental colleges, Saveetha Institute of Medical And Technical Sciences-Chennai, Manipal College of Dental Sciences and DY Patil Vidyapeeth-Pune retained the top three positions.&nbsp;

A second-year B Tech student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras died by suicide on campus, police said on Friday. The student was a native of Madhya Pradesh. This is the fourth case of a student suicide reported this year from IIT Madras and the 12th since 2018.
"The body was taken for autopsy and a preliminary investigation is underway on the IIT Madras campus," said an officer of Chennai Police. Further details on the incident are awaited.
Earlier, on April 2, a PhD student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, died by suicide in his room in Tamil Nadu's Velachery, police told media. The student was a native of West Bengal and was aged 32.&nbsp;

The inquiry committee has reportedly been tasked with looking into reasons and other aspects of the incidents. Elected student representatives are also part of the panel.

A third-year BTech student part of the electrical engineering department was reportedly found hanging in his hostel room by his roommates on 14 March 2023. Police said that preliminary information suggested he faced trouble in "focusing on studies", as per an NDTV report.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has ranked the best among research institutions and has been ranked at second place in the overall ranking. IIT Bombay has taken the third spot on top universities list.
In the sixth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework announced by Union Education Dharmendra Pradhan, eight IITs and two national Institutes of Technology figured in the top ten engineering institutions in the country.
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad ranked as the best B-School, while Jamia Hamdard was declared the top institution for pharmacy studies.
In the colleges category, Miranda House in Delhi bagged the first rank followed by Lady Sri Ram College for Women, Delhi and Loyola College, Chennai.
As per the NIRF ranking, AIIMS Delhi has bagged the top spot among medical colleges followed by PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Vellore.

The charred body of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras lecturer was found inside the campus on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as&nbsp;Unnikrishnan Nair. He had completed B.Tech in April 2021 and joined IIT Madras as a project associate and guest lecturer.
He was found dead near the hockey ground by some students &nbsp;and the Sports Officer of the institute alerted the local police
The Kotturpuram police recovered the body&nbsp;and sent it to a government hospital for autopsy,&nbsp;news agency ANI reported
An 11-page suicide note was retrieved from his room. His note read he 'was unable to cope with work' a police official said.

India’s Own Microprocessor 'Moushik' Is Here | Summachar

Researchers at IIT Madras have developed an indegenious microprocessor that may soon become an integral part of Smart Cities of Digital India.
Moushik is a system on a chip conceptualised and developed by the Reconfigurable Intelligent Systems Engineering group at IIT Madras. It is a part of the SHAKTI project - the free and open source silicon project of IIT Madras. The IITM team designed the processor and Motherboard, whereas the foundry-specific backend design and fabrication was done at ISRO&rsquo;s semiconductor labs in Chandigarh. Its motherboard, called &ldquo;Ardonyx 1.0&rdquo;, was made in Bengaluru, making this SoC truly a Made in India product.
Now what exactly is a System on Chip? It is a chip that integrates most components of a computer like CPU, GPU, memory, input/output ports and secondary storage, in a single microchip of the size of a coin. It is generally used in appliances like mobile phones, wearable devices, and streaming sticks.
Moushik chip was made using 180-nanometer technology. It has 103 functional Input Output Ports, that are used by software to communicate with other hardware components. Its other notable features are: 1.8V Core Voltage, 3.3V IO Voltage, and a Gate Count of 647k. Moreover, its 100Mhz speed can cater to various small devices and home appliances.
The chip can be used in Credit cards, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), surveillance cameras, amongst other IoT Devices. The most impressive thing about this chip is that if there is an order for one million units, its cost can be reduced to even $1 per chip. India already has a demand for billions of such chips.
According to the developers, the Moushik chip and the Shakti group of processors are at par with the Industry standard. Indigenous brands and startups can use them in their products and minimize the usage of Imported system. It will also help in strategic sectors like defense, nuclear power installations and Government Agencies.
