A new study based on India's NFHS-5 data links PM2.5 exposure and climate conditions during pregnancy to premature and low-weight births, especially in North India.

India's demographic health survey 2019-21 reveals that 13 per cent of children were born prematurely, and 17 per cent with a low weight at birth, with air pollution contributing to the adverse birth outcomes.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, and institutes in the UK and Ireland looked at the National Family Health Survey-5 and remote sensing data to analyse how exposure to air pollution in pregnancy impacted the delivery outcomes.
The team found that an increased exposure to PM2.5 during pregnancy was related with a 40 per cent chance of low birth weight, and 70 per cent of premature delivery.
Climate conditions, such as rainfall and temperature, were found to have a greater link with adverse birth outcomes.
The study, published in the journal PLoS Global Public Health, also found that children living in the northern districts of India could be more vulnerable to the ambient air pollution.
Measuring under 2.5 microns in diameter, fine particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is considered among the most harmful air pollutants, sources of which include burning of fossil fuels and biomass.
The researchers found higher levels of PM2.5 pollutants over the upper Gangetic region, covering states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, and lower levels in the country's southern and north-eastern regions.
A higher prevalence of premature births was seen in northern states, such as Himachal Pradesh (39 per cent), Uttarakhand (27 per cent), Rajasthan (18 per cent), and Delhi (17 per cent).
Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura exhibited a lower prevalence of the trend.
Punjab was found to have the highest prevalence of lower birth weight at 22 per cent, followed by Delhi, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
North-east India fared far better on the metric, the authors said.
"Utilising data from the national family health survey and raster images, the study employs various statistical analyses and spatial models to elucidate the connection between in-utero exposure to air pollution and birth outcomes," the authors wrote.
They "observed that approximately 13 per cent of children were born prematurely, and 17 per cent were born with low birth weight." Further, an increase of 10 microgram per cubic metre in PM2.5 exposure was associated with an increase of five per cent in the prevalence of low birth weight, and 12 per cent in premature birth.
The team added that 18 per cent of children born in the five years preceding the National Family Health Survey-5 had a low weight at birth.
The authors called for targeted interventions, especially in the northern districts, and an intensification of the National Clean Air Program.
Launched in 2019, the programme is aimed at improving air quality in India by addressing PM levels.
The researchers also advocated for climate adaptation strategies, such as heat action plans and water management, to be included in public health planning.
Awareness of risks due to air pollution and climate change should be raised as part of public health initiatives, especially among pregnant women, the team said.

IIT Delhi leads India at 123rd rank in QS World University Rankings 2026 as the country sees record 54 institutions featured, the highest ever.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi is the best-ranked Indian institution in QS World University Rankings for 2026 by climbing up to the 123rd spot with a record 54 universities and institutions from the country making it to the coveted list.
IIT Delhi has climbed more than 70 places in two years, ranking 123rd this year compared with 197 and 150 in previous two years. This has been down to outstanding results in Employer Reputation (where it now ranks 50th), Citations (86th), Sustainability (172nd), and Academic Reputation (142nd).
IIT Delhi has jointly bagged the rank alongside Georgia Institute of Technology, US.
While IIT Bombay slipped to 129th this year from its all-time best rank of 118 in 2025, it remains in the global top 130 and continues to score highly on Employer Reputation, ranking 39th in that indicator.
The coveted QS World University Rankings, published annually by Londoon-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assess universities based on a variety of performance indicators including academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity and graduate employability.
With eight new institutions added to the ranking this year, India now has 54 institutions included, making it the fourth most represented country behind only the US (192 institutions), the UK (90 institutions) and Mainland China (72 institutions).
No other country or territory has seen as many universities added to the ranking this year. Jordan and Azerbaijan are second most improved and have both seen six added in 2026 rankings.
"India is rewriting the global higher education map. No other country has seen more universities debut in this edition of the QS World University Rankings &mdash; a clear sign of a system evolving at speed and scale," said Jessica Turner, CEO of QS.
"In the world&rsquo;s most populous nation &mdash; with more than 40 pc of its people under 25 &mdash; the drive to expand both access and quality is not just an education agenda, it is a national imperative. Delivering on India's 50 pc Gross Enrolment Ratio target by 2035 will require growth on an extraordinary scale &mdash; equivalent to building 14 new universities every week, according to QS estimates," she added.
Turner said, "We see clear progress. Indian universities are strengthening their global research footprint and advancing in areas such as Citations per Faculty, Sustainability, and International Research Network. But the rankings also highlight the next frontier &mdash; attracting more international students and faculty and building academic capacity to support quality at scale".
Close to half of the 46 Indian universities featured in last year&rsquo;s ranking improved their positions this year. Overall, 54 of over universities from 106 countries and territories featured in the 2026 ranking are from India.
QS officials noted that in just a decade, India's ranked universities have grown from 11 to 54 &mdash; a 390 pc increase, the strongest performance across the G20, and testament to the growing global recognition of India&rsquo;s higher education excellence.
Six of India&rsquo;s 11 public and private institutes of eminence have improved their positions this year, including Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) which climbed 47 places and entered the top 200 for the first time at 180th.
All three private institutes of eminence increased their positions, with only two private universities &ndash; Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (503rd) and Chandigarh University (575th) - ahead of Birla Institute of Technology and Science at 668.
"India's remarkable progress in this year's QS World University Rankings reflects not only the rising global stature of its leading institutions, but also the growing breadth and ambition of its higher education landscape. The addition of eight new universities to the rankings, more than any other country, signals an encouraging trajectory.
"With increasing global engagement, investment in research, and a sharp focus on employability, Indian universities are beginning to align more closely with the expectations of a rapidly evolving knowledge economy," said Ashwin Fernandes, QS Regional Director &ndash; Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

Among Indian institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has secured the top spot, ranking 171st globally with an impressive 81.1 percentile in the Environmental Sustainability metric.

IIT Kharagpur follows in second place among Indian institutions, securing the 202nd rank globally, while IIT Bombay claims the third spot with a global rank of 234. Here&rsquo;s a detailed look at the rankings of Indian universities:

The University of Toronto has claimed the top global position, excelling in Environmental Sustainability (91), Environmental Education (99.7), and Environmental Research (98.5). It is followed by ETH Zurich in second place. Lund University (Sweden) and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) share the third spot globally.

Methodology and Observations
The QS Sustainability Rankings evaluate universities based on their impact in three categories: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance. The assessment incorporates indicators such as health and wellbeing, equality, employability, and operational sustainability.
Ben Sowter, Vice President at QS, lauded the performance of Indian universities, highlighting that 34 institutions improved their rankings this year, demonstrating their growing commitment to sustainability initiatives. However, he also noted that Indian universities could enhance their scores in areas like health, equality, and education impact.
Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, emphasized the importance of sustainability to prospective students. "Nine out of ten students identify sustainability as important, and 40% actively research a university's sustainability strategies during the application process," she said, underscoring the growing demand for environmentally conscious education.

We often hear about those few IIT graduates bagging packages over 1 crore, even 2 crore rupees. But the reality for many is starkly different. According to recent reports from Deloitte and TeamLease, the class of 2024 from the IITs is seeing a drop in annual pay, now ranging between 15-16 lakh rupees.This isn&rsquo;t just about salaries.
There&rsquo;s also a noticeable decrease in the number of students being recruited. This raises concerns about the current state of affairs at India&rsquo;s premier educational institutes.As per a reply to an RTI query filed by &nbsp;IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh, 22% of IIT Delhi students registered for placements between 2019 and 2023 remained unemployed.
In a LinkedIn post in May, the IIT Kanpur alumnus and placements mentor Singh shared three years' placement data based on 23 RTIs or Right to Information, annual reports, media reports, and student insights.In 2024, out of 21,500 students registered at IITs, 13,410 secured placements, leaving 8,090 still seeking jobs.
This marked a significant increase in the number of unplaced students, nearly double that of 2023. In 2023, 20,000 students registered for campus placements, with 15,830 obtaining jobs at an average annual package of 17.1 lakh rupees, while 4,170 remained unplaced.
In the previous year, that is, 2022, over 3,000 out of 17,900 registered students were unable to secure placements through IIT campus facilities. Singh noted on LinkedIn that the median CTC for that year was 17.2 lakh rupees per annum.
The job scarcity affecting top engineering graduates has led to immediate worries about oversupply, skills mismatches, and unrealistic salary expectations.
This has also sparked AI-led existential concerns for a talent pool that's been a cornerstone of India's software services industry, contributing 7% to the country&rsquo;s GDP.

The Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi's Education and Knowledge Department (ADEK) have signed an agreement for setting up the campus of IIT Delhi in the gulf country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing visit to the UAE. The MoU is part of the "IITs go global" campaign. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi is the second IIT to announce setting up an offshore campus. Last week, IIT Madras had signed an MoU for setting up its campus in Tanzania's Zanzibar.
"MoU for establishment of @iitdelhi campus in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Hon. PM @narendramodiji unfolds a new chapter in internationalisation of India&rsquo;s education," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted.
"An exemplar of #NewIndia's innovation and expertise, the IIT Delhi campus in UAE will be an edifice of India and UAE friendship. It will set a brand new template for leveraging the power of knowledge for both mutual prosperity and global good as envisioned in NEP," he added.
While the Masters courses will be offered at the Abu Dhabi campus from January next year, the Bachelor-level programmes will be offered from September.

A 30-year-old IIT Delhi student was killed and his friend was injured after they were allegedly hit by a car outside the campus here, police said on Wednesday. &nbsp;The 31-year-old driver of the vehicle has been nabbed, they said.
Ashraf Nawaz Khan and Ankur Shukla (29), both PhD students, went to a restaurant in SDA market on Tuesday night and were crossing the road after having dinner when the car hit them, a senior police officer said. &nbsp;Khan died during treatment at the Safdarjung hospital while Shukla is admitted to the Max hospital in Saket with a fractured leg, he said. &nbsp;The car, which hit the duo, was found abandoned at some distance, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said, "We have apprehended driver Avihant Sherawat, resident of Mahipalpur, and further interrogation is on."
