A stern deadline by the education ministry has led to IITs placing ads for quota-based hiring of faculty members, a first for the institutes. Upto this point IITs had autonomy over recruitment but that is seeing a sweeping change with the education ministry writing to the institutes that reservation rules need to be adhered to and vacancies “especially in the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and other backward classes” be filled by September 4, 2022. 
PM Modi led government in November 2019 had written to all IITs, IIMs and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research to implement reservation in faculty hiring. This was faced by opposition by the institutes that requested the quota system be applicable only till assistant level hires.

While WhatsApp has challenged the new rules in court, the sharpest tussle is with Twitter, which has failed to appoint a permanent compliance officer based in India.
A government note said that as an IAS officer, Vaishnaw handled important responsibilities over 15 years and was particularly known for his contribution to the public-private partnership framework in Infrastructure.
He has a MBA from Wharton School, Pennsylvania University and MTech from IIT Kanpur, and has held leadership roles across major global companies such as General Electric and Siemens.

The charred body of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras lecturer was found inside the campus on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as&nbsp;Unnikrishnan Nair. He had completed B.Tech in April 2021 and joined IIT Madras as a project associate and guest lecturer.
He was found dead near the hockey ground by some students &nbsp;and the Sports Officer of the institute alerted the local police
The Kotturpuram police recovered the body&nbsp;and sent it to a government hospital for autopsy,&nbsp;news agency ANI reported
An 11-page suicide note was retrieved from his room. His note read he 'was unable to cope with work' a police official said.

IIT-Kharagpur develops low-cost Covid test, gets ICMR nod

The IIT-Kharagpur has developed a low-cost portable Covid-19 testing device that can deliver results within an hour. It has also got approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur has developed a low-cost portable Covid-19 testing device that can deliver results within an hour. The testing device has also got approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research. According to IIT-Kharagpur officials, 'COVIRAP' is a cuboid-shaped portable testing device that can deliver results in an hour, making it an effective tool to scale up coronavirus screening in peripheral and rural areas. The officials added that the machine can be developed at a cost of less than 10,000 rupees amd the cost of test is around 500 rupees.

New Delhi, PTI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur has developed a low-cost portable Covid-19 testing device that can deliver results within an hour. The testing device has also got approval from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
According to IIT-Kharagpur officials, 'COVIRAP' is a cuboid-shaped portable testing device that can deliver results in an hour, making it an effective tool to scale up coronavirus screening in peripheral and rural areas.
"This innovation has made high-quality and accurate COVID testing affordable for the common people with a testing cost of around Rs 500 which can further be reduced through government intervention. This machine can be developed at a cost of less than Rs 10,000 with minimal infrastructural requirement making the technology affordable to common people. The testing process in this new machine is completed within one hour," Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said.
He said the device would go on impacting the lives of many in rural India as the device is portable and can be operated on a very low energy supply. Minimally trained rural youth can operate this device.
According to VK Tewari, Director, IIT-Kharagpur, "the innovation is set to replace PCR-based tests to a large extent. While the Institute can produce the testing kit up to a certain scale, patent licensing will facilitate commercialisation opportunities for medical technology companies. Any corporate or start-up can approach the institute for technology licensing and commercial scale of production".
Elaborating on the validation process of &lsquo;COVIRAP&rsquo; diagnostic test, Mamta Chawla Sarkar, an internationally acclaimed virologist who oversaw the patient trials on behalf of ICMR-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), said a detailed scrutiny of the testing results has clearly shown that this assay holds the capability of detecting extremely low levels of viral loads that any other method based on similar principles of testing, even those from the most celebrated research groups across the world, could not come up with so far.
"This means that very early stages of infection can be detected, thereby isolating the patient and arresting the uncontrolled spread of infection in the community via asymptomatic patients," she said.
According to the research team, the number of tests per one-hour batch in a single machine unit can be further increased to much higher limits, for the purpose of testing on a mass scale.
