Under-fire Igor Stimac will remain in charge of India's FIFA World Cup second-round qualifying matches against Kuwait and Qatar as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has asked the head coach of the senior men's team to focus on the upcoming two games.
This comes a week after the technical committee headed by Indian football great I M Vijayan recommended the sacking of the Croatian after the shocking defeat to Afghanistan in the home leg match in Guwahati on March 26.
A committee, constituted by AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey and headed by vice-president N A Haris, following the loss to Afghanistan, held discussions with Stimac during a virtual meeting on Tuesday.
Vijayan, who is a member of the AIFF executive committee and the chairman of the technical committee, said: "I am happy that we had a good discussion with the head coach. In the World Cup qualifiers, we have two matches in hand with a chance to make Round 3 for the first time in history.
"It is time we focussed on the next two matches and stayed solidly behind the national team so that they could do their best." Three members of the committee, including Haris, Vijayan and Climax Lawrence could not attend the meeting.
During the meeting, Stimac was also asked to explain his comments before the Afghanistan home game, where he had said that he would resign if India failed to qualify for round three of the qualifiers.
"A year ago, I said that we would try and qualify for Round 3 and currently we are second in the group and two teams qualify. We will discuss this issue further after the match against Kuwait on June 6, 2024," Stimac said during the meeting.
Stimac had earlier also said that the results against Kuwait and Qatar in June will be the real indicator of the Indian football team's prospect of making a maiden appearance in the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
He reiterated that in the meeting with AIFF officials.
"The game against Kuwait on June 6 will be one of the biggest days in Indian football, as a win will immensely brighten our chances to qualify for Round 3 for the first time," Stimac said.
"The staff and the players are all aware of this historic moment that awaits us, and we will do everything in our capacity to win," the coach said.
"Fruitful discussions were had with the AIFF committee members. I appreciate everyone's concern and hope we will join together to create history in June." Having taken charge of the Blue Tigers in 2019, Stimac's contract was last year extended until 2026.

Head coach Igor Stimac on Monday said that it's a game like any other and what they can do is give their best in their 2026 FIFA World Cup round 2 qualifiers match against Asian champions Qatar on Tuesday.
India's 1-0 away win against Kuwait on November 16 will certainly boost their confidence but Stimac made it clear that "Qatar is out of our league", though the home side will seek to take inspiration from their famous goal-less draw against the Asian champions four years ago.
"The Kuwait game was the most important in our qualifiers in this group. We had an away win against our direct opponent for the second spot," Stimac said at the pre-match press conference.
Stimac urged his players to consider Tuesday's match at the Kalinga Stadium as any other game
"We are very realistic, we know that Qatar is out of our league. But we also know that this is football, the most beautiful game in the world, which provides opportunities, and this is our opportunity." &nbsp;
"We all know their strength and what they are capable of and in what way they destroyed Afghanistan a few days back," said Stimac, referring to Qatar's 8-1 win over Afghanistan in their earlier match on November 16.
"It's a game like any other, that is what my players need to accept and prepare for. What we can do is give our best.
"This is a game where there is nothing to lose for us and a hell of a lot to gain. So, let's go for it." Not thinking of past results: Sandhu.
Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who had captained the Indian team that played out the famous 0-0 draw in Doha on September 10, 2019, said he is not thinking about the past result now.
"It's going to be a challenge as they are a quality side. But there is nothing to be scared of, just to give our best.
"We are playing at our home, and we need to use this advantage to go for the maximum, give a good fight and hope for the best," said Sandhu, adding that nobody is thinking about the past results.
In that drawn match in Doha four years ago, India survived waves of Qatari attacks, and Sandhu produced 11 saves and saw the upright coming to his rescue once.
"I would love maximum points for the least work possible. I want the players to get on the scoresheet and get us a win, that is much better for me than me making many saves," he said.
Talismanic striker Suni Chhetri did not play that match as he was indisposed. But he will, as usual, be the pivotal player on Tuesday.
"Having Sunil is always a bonus, there is no doubt about that," Sandhu said.
"In the past four years, a lot of players have developed and played a lot of football together and they are maturing."
"Forget what had happened four years ago, let us move forward. We are a different team now, we are a better team. We must go out with zero fear and give our absolute everything."
The team has progressed a lot in four years since the 2019 Qatar match: Stimac
"It was the start of a process. Now four years later, we can say that the process of reconstructing the team is finished but it will never stop," said the Croatian, who took charge of the team just a few months before the 2019 draw in Qatar.
"We have a much bigger pool of players who are contenders for the national team positions. We can go for various options inside the game. We are still in love with the 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation depending on the opponent." Stimac said consistency and good performance level of the team was also clear.
"When you play 11 consecutive matches without losing, you don't lose a match against Iraq (in Kings Cup in Thailand), it is quite evident that you are consistent." He also vented his frustration at the poor refereeing-though without mentioning anything - during India's match against Malaysia in the Merdeka Cup last month. India lost that match 2-4.
"I will not go back and mention the tournament in Malaysia (Merdeka) because I don't have anything good to say about it. It's not about my team, my players but about what happened there," he said.
"It's sad that my work and the work of my boys ... commitment and hunger depend on a few poor people who (were) deciding on a certain day to destroy all our work of the past few years.
"With one poor decision or bad decision, because that changes 10 positions in the rankings, imagine that and I am judged on the rankings at the end of the day."

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) had planned that Stimac would take an Under-23 side to the Asian Games in Hangzhou event, starting from September 23.
However, since the Indian football team does not meet the Sports Ministry's criteria of being ranked among the top-8 sides, it is set to miss the continental event.
"I wanted to bring to your immediate attention that our U-17 team from 2017, which also gave a great performance at the U-23 World Cup qualifiers and is one very talented team, is now being deprived from participating in the Asian games," Stimac wrote in a lengthy social media.
Besides Modi, Stimac also appealed to Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
"This team really needs and deserves the participation. The reasons given are unjust and as India's national team coach, I felt it's important to immediately bring this matter to your and the Hon'ble Sports Minister Anurag Thakur's knowledge.
"So that you could intervene and help the team participate in the Asian Games." India is currently ranked 18th among countries under the Asian Football Confederation.
"As our own ministry is denying the participation on the context of ranking, whereas the fact is that our football team is better ranked than some of the other sports teams which have been allowed participation in the Asian games.
"Also history and statistics are testimony to the fact that football is one sport where a lower ranked team has a chance to beat the top ranked teams," the Croatian wrote.
In a letter sent to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and all the National Sports Federations (NSFs), the Sports Ministry has said that "for team events, only those sports which have achieved a ranking up to eighth among participating countries of Asia in the last one year should be considered for participation in Asian Games".
Since 2002, football at the Asian Games has been an U-23 affair with three players above that age are also permitted in a team.
"India hosted the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017 and invested heavily in building a very fine new generation of players.
"You have always supported India's dream of playing in FIFA World Cup one day and I am certain that if we have your continuous support in the manner we have received till date, the day is not far when we will be at the global stage participating in the most prestigious tournaments.
"We as a national team have worked extremely hard in the last 4 years and managed some great results, proving that we can achieve more if we get the support from all stakeholders," he said in his request to the Prime Minister.
There is a provision in the Sports Ministry's instructions sent to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and NSFs, which could give a ray of hope to the football squad.
&ldquo;Where, in the opinion of the experts of specific sports disciplines, and that of Sports Authority of India, participation of individuals and teams in relaxation of the above criteria (top 8) is recommended with justifiable reasons, the same will be considered in the Ministry for appropriate decision," the ministry letter said.
It was only last week that Modi had spoken about French footballer Kylian Mbappe being a "superhit" among the youth in India and that the World Cup winner is probably known to more people in India than in France.
"Your speech about football and Mbappe in your recent visit to France also touched all Indians dreaming and rooting for Indian football." "So my humble appeal and sincere request on behalf of the entire Indian football fraternity to you, to kindly allow our football team to particiapte in the Asian Games," Stimac concluded.

India head coach Igor Stimac was handed a two-match ban for his red-card offence after he argued with the match officials during the home side's 1-1 draw against Kuwait in their last group match of the SAFF Championships football.

Stimac was also fined USD 500 as the SAFF Disciplinary Committee deemed it a fit case for suspending him for more than one match.

India head coach Igor Stimac was on Friday handed a two-match ban for his red-card offence after he argued with the match officials during the home side's 1-1 draw against Kuwait in their last group match of the SAFF Championships football here.
Stimac was also fined USD 500 as the SAFF Disciplinary Committee deemed it a fit case for suspending him for more than one match.
He was also handed a red card against Pakistan in India's campaign opener on June 21 but in that case the matter was not referred to the SAFF Disciplinary Committee as the offence was deemed "less serious" and he had to sit out of the subsequent match against Nepal on June 24.
But in this case relating to the red card in the Kuwait game on June 27, the matter reached the SAFF Disciplinary Committee which imposed a more severe punishment on the experienced Croatian coach and 1998 Wold Cup bronze medallist.
"He (Stimac) has been handed two-match ban and also fined USD 500 (Rs 41,000)," SAFF General Secretary General Anwarul Haq told PTI on Friday.
"Unlike the first instance (against Pakistan), the matter reached the SAFF Disciplinary Committee as it was a graver offence. He (Stimac) also used abusive language against the math officials while he was going off the field (after being shown red card)." In the tense match against Kuwait, Stimac engaged in an animated argument with the match officials and was eventually flashed a red card in the 81st minute.
In any case, Stimac was to sit out of India's semifinal match against Lebanon on Saturday as one match ban was automatic but now he will not be in the dug out if the home team reaches the final. Assistant coach Mahesh Gawli will have to take his place.

All four teams are quite efficient and can produce different kind of football. The crowd will love it as there will be a lot of goals. We have a very serious group and some tough opponents."

Before India's 0-3 loss to Vietnam, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore.

The Indian football team suffered a 0-3 defeat by hosts Vietnam in the Hung Thinh Friendly Tournament on Tuesday.&nbsp;
The Blue Tigers, who were seeking redemption against Vietnam after their draw against Singapore earlier, failed to challenge the home side.
In their previous game, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore (Rank 159), who are ranked 55 places lower than the Indian team in the 104th spot in FIFA rankings.
Vietnam opened the scoring with Phan Van Duc who slotted home in the 10th minute. The visitors came close on some occasions courtesy of forwards Ashique Kuruniyan and Sunil Chhetri but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. The home team scored two goals in the second half to complete the rout.
Team India are without a win since their 4-0 victory against Hong Kong back in June and will be disappointed by their performance during the international break.
