This round of layoff was conducted in the company's marketing and communications division.

IBM has reportedly announced layoffs in multiple divisions. According to a report by CNBC, the layoffs were announced by Jonathan Adashek, the Chief Communications Officer at IBM, in a seven-minute meeting without any prior notice.
The report did not disclose the exact number of affected employees but indicated that the layoffs were conducted in the company's marketing and communications division.
As of now, the company hasn't released any official statement regarding the same.
Earlier, the company's CEO, Arvind Krishna, had stated that they are going to pause hiring for roles that can be replaced by Artificial Intelligence. He also announced a suspension or slowdown in hiring for back-office roles like human resources, suggesting that around 30% of these positions could be replaced by AI and automation within the next five years. In the starting of March IBM urged employees interested in voluntary redundancy to express their willingness to leave the company as it was gearing up for another wave of job cuts in Europe.
In a Q4 earnings call last month, IBM referred to layoffs as a "resource action." IBM has issued a sweeping directive to its US-based managers, instructing them to either relocate near an office or leave the company. In a memo dated January 16, Senior Vice President John Granger mandated that all US managers must report to an office or client location at least three days a week, regardless of their current work location status. Badge-in data will be monitored to assess individual presence, with the information shared with managers and human resources.
Employees working remotely, excluding those with exceptions such as medical issues or military service, are required to move near an IBM office by the start of August. This generally implies relocating within a 50-mile radius, according to an anonymous source familiar with the corporate policy. Managers who refuse to relocate and cannot secure an approved remote role are faced with the ultimatum of leaving IBM.
The move is part of IBM&rsquo;s commitment to balancing flexibility with face-to-face interactions for increased productivity, innovation, and better client service. CEO Arvind Krishna has consistently emphasized the importance of in-person work, stating in a May 2023 interview that promotions will be scarcer for those not on-site. Some teams within IBM had already implemented office attendance requirements.
IBM, known as Big Blue, has undergone strategic shifts in recent years, focusing on software and services while divesting various businesses. The company reported positive fourth-quarter earnings last week, resulting in its best stock performance in almost four years. However, IBM expects job reductions this year, with CFO James Kavanaugh stating that restructuring spending will be similar to the previous year when 3,900 workers were planned to be cut.
The return-to-office mandate by IBM is reflective of a broader trend seen across various industries, with companies tightening rules as the job market evolves. Tech giants like Amazon and AT&amp;T have also mandated remote workers to relocate. Despite such directives, office attendance across major US business districts has remained relatively stagnant, hovering around 50% of pre-pandemic levels, as per data from Kastle Systems.

The company's shares fell by 2 percent in after-hours trading because of the job cuts and the shortfall in free cash flow.
The layoffs are related to the company's decision to split off its Kyndryl business and a part of its Watson Health AI unit. They will cost the company $300 million from January to March.
The company predicted that its annual revenue growth would be in the mid-single digits, which is less than the 12 percent growth it reported last year.&nbsp;
Overall, IBM's sales stayed the same during the time period, at $16.69 billion. In 2022, however, they grew by 5.5 percent, which was the most growth they had seen in a decade.
