Houthi authorities issued what they purported to be videotaped confessions by 10 Yemenis, several of whom said they were recruited by the US Embassy.

Yemen's Houthi rebels said Monday they had arrested members of an &ldquo;American-Israeli spy network&rdquo;, days after detaining at least 11 UN staffers along with others from aid organisations.
Maj. Gen. Abdulhakim al-Khayewani, head of the Houthis' intelligence agency, announced the arrests, saying the spy network had first operated out of the US Embassy in Sanaa. Then after it was closed in 2015 following the Houthi takeover of the capital Sanaa and northern Yemen, they continued &ldquo;their subversive agenda under the cover of international and UN organisations,&rdquo; he said.
He did not say how many people were arrested. Houthi authorities issued what they purported to be videotaped confessions by 10 Yemenis, several of whom said they were recruited by the US Embassy. They did not include any of the UN employees who were arrested. The Houthis' claims could not be independently verified.
The United Nations on Friday announced the arrests of 11 Yemeni staffers. Six worked for the UN's human rights agency, while one apiece worked for its special envoy's office, its development arm, UNICEF, the World Food Program and UNESCO. Other aid groups also reported employees detained, though the total number was not known.
The detentions come as the Houthis, who have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since their takeover of the north, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, their administration has faced increased financial pressure, and the group has cracked down at dissent at home, including recently sentencing 44 people to death.
Al-Khayewani depicted the spy network as having worked for decades to infiltrate Yemen's economy, agriculture, health system and other sectors to destroy them.
The war in Yemen has killed more than 150,000 people, including fighters and civilians, and created one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters, killing tens of thousands more. The Houthis' attacks on shipping have helped deflect attention from their problems at home and the stalemated war. But they've faced increasing casualties and damage from U.S.-led airstrikes targeting the group for months now.
It's unclear what exactly sparked the latest detentions. Former employees of the US Embassy in Sanaa, which shuttered in 2015, also have been detained and held by the Houthis.
However, it comes as the Houthis have faced issues with having enough currency to support the economy in areas they hold. Yemen's exiled government in the southern city of Aden have demanded all banks move their headquarters there as a means to stop the worst slide ever in the value of the currency and re-exert their control over the economy.

At least nine Yemeni employees of United Nations agencies have been detained by Yemen's Houthi rebels under unclear circumstances, authorities said Friday, as the rebels face increasing financial pressure and airstrikes from a US-led coalition. Others working for aid groups also likely have been taken.
The detentions come as the Houthis, who seized Yemen's capital nearly a decade ago and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since shortly after, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
But while gaining more attention internationally, the secretive group has cracked down at dissent at home, including recently sentencing 44 people to death.
Regional officials, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to brief journalists, confirmed the UN detentions. Those held include staff from the United Nations human rights agency, its development program, the World Food Program and one working for the office of its special envoy, the officials said. The wife of one of those held is also detained.
The UN declined to immediately comment.
The Mayyun Organisation for Human Rights, which similarly identified the UN staffers held, named other aid groups whose employees were detained by the Houthis across four provinces the Houthis hold &mdash; Amran, Hodeida, Saada and Saana. Those groups did not immediately acknowledge the detentions.
&ldquo;We condemn in the strongest terms this dangerous escalation, which constitutes a violation of the privileges and immunities of United Nations employees granted to them under international law, and we consider it to be oppressive, totalitarian, blackmailing practices to obtain political and economic gains,&rdquo; the organisation said in a statement.
Yemen's Houthi rebels and their affiliated media organisations did not immediately acknowledge the detentions. However, the Iranian-backed rebels planned for weekly mass demonstrations after noon prayers Friday, when Houthi officials typically speak on their actions.
It's unclear what exactly sparked the detentions. However, it comes as the Houthis have faced issues with having enough currency to support the economy in areas they hold &mdash; something signalled by their move to introduce a new coin into the Yemeni currency, the riyal. Yemen's exiled government in Aden and other nations criticised the move as the Houthis turning to counterfeiting. Aden authorities also have demanded all banks move their headquarters there.
&ldquo;Internal tensions and conflicts could spiral out of control and lead Yemen into complete economic collapse,&rdquo; warned Yemeni journalist Mohammed Ali Thamer in an analysis published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Bloomberg separately reported Thursday that the US planned to further increase economic pressure on the Houthis by blocking their revenue sources, including a planned USD 1.5 billion Saudi payment to cover salaries for government employees in rebel-held territory.

Thousands have been imprisoned by the Houthis during the war. An AP investigation found some detainees were scorched with acid, forced to hang from their wrists for weeks at a time or were beaten with batons. Meanwhile, the Houthis have employed child soldiers and indiscriminately laid mines in the conflict.
The Houthis are members of Islam's minority Shiite Zaydi sect, which ruled northern Yemen for 1,000 years until 1962.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday spoke with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and discussed the importance of securing freedom of navigation in international waters and prevention of disruption in global economy and trade, as well as the economies of the two countries.
In a statement, the Office of the Prime Minister of Israel said that Netanyahu spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
"The two leaders discussed the importance of securing freedom of navigation in the Bab-el-Mandeb, which is threatened by the aggression of the Houthis, instigated by Iran, and the global interest in preventing attacks on the global economy and trade, as well as the Indian and Israeli economies," the statement said.
Prime Minister Modi noted that "freedom of navigation is an essential global necessity that must be ensured," it said.
"Had a productive exchange of views with PM @netanyahu on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, including shared concerns on the safety of maritime traffic," Modi said in a post on X.
Modi said he also highlighted India's consistent stand in favour of early restoration of peace and stability in the region with continued humanitarian assistance for the affected people.
Yemen's Houthis have targeted Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea in the wake of Israel's war with Hamas. In the past few days, some of the world's largest container shipping companies have stopped or rerouted movements through the Red Sea.
Israel launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Palestinian group Hamas on October 7.
The two leaders also discussed advancing the arrival of workers from India to the State of Israel, the Israeli PMO statement said.
Israel urgently needs workers to continue with construction projects and the contractors have made a strong plea with the government to bring in hundreds of thousands of people from abroad to meet the needs.
Israel&rsquo;s Minister of Economy Nir Barkat had discussed the possibility of bringing workers from India to fill the need in Israel&rsquo;s infrastructure industry during his India visit in April this year.
The largest group of about 80,000 workers in the construction industry come from the Palestinian Authority. Another group of about 7,000 come from China and some 6,000 from Eastern Europe. The ongoing war has created a shortage of workers.
There are about 18,000 Indians working in Israel, mostly as caregivers.
Netanyahu is said to have also thanked Modi for "India's support of Israel's just war to eliminate the Hamas terrorist organization," the Israeli PMO statement said.

 Houthis release video of ship hijack: rebels' chopper seen linked to Israel-linked vessel

The Bahaman-flagged vessel is registered under a British company, which is partially owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham Ungar, who goes by Rami.

Yemen's Houthis have released video footage showing armed men dropping from a helicopter and seizing a cargo ship in the southern Red Sea.
The footage was released by the movement's TV channel Al Masirah after the ship was hijacked by the Iran-backed group, who said the ship was linked to Israel. Israel, however, says the seized ship was British-owned and Japanese-operated. 
The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen released a video showing how the group hijacked an Israeli-linked shipping vessel in the Red Sea.
The footage shows a helicopter landing on the vehicle carrier named the Galaxy Leader, with several gunmen getting off and taking control of the ship.
Houthi gunmen can be seen holding the international crew at gunpoint in the video.
