A prominent Hindu temple in Brampton in Canada has been targeted with anti-India graffiti, causing outrage among the Indian community.
Condemning the act of vandalism at Gauri Shankar Mandir, the Indian Consulate General in Toronto said the defacing of the temple has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada.
"The hateful act of vandalism has deeply hurt sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. We have raised our concerns on the matter with Canadian authorities," the consulate office said in a statement on Tuesday.
The temple, which is a symbol of Indian heritage, has been left vandalised with hate-filled messages directed towards India.
The Canadian authorities are currently investigating the incident.
The defacing of the Hindu temple in Brampton is not an isolated incident, with at least three similar acts of vandalism recorded in Canada since last July.
Last September, the Indian Foreign Ministry has issued a strongly worded statement, saying there has been a &ldquo;sharp increase&rdquo; in hate crimes against Indians and other &ldquo;anti-India activities&rdquo; in Canada. New Delhi had urged the Canadian government to properly investigate the incidents.
Statistics Canada, the country's national statistical office, has reported a 72 percent increase in hate crimes targeting religion, sexual orientation and race in Canada between 2019 and 2021.
This has led to increased fears among minority communities, particularly the Indian community, which is the fastest-growing demographic group in Canada, accounting for almost four percent of the population.
Indian officials have repeatedly raised the issue of attacks on the Indian community by pro-Khalistani elements in Canada.

Report: another Hindu temple allegedly vandalised by suspected 'Khalistani supporters' in Australia

The vandalism of the historic Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Carrum Downs, Victoria, took place on Monday, The Australia Today website reported.
This act of vandalism was noticed when the devotees came for &lsquo;darshan&rsquo; as the three-day long &ldquo;Thai Pongal&rdquo; festival is being celebrated by the Tamil Hindu community.

Usha Senthilnathan, a long-time devotee of Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple said, &ldquo;We are a Tamil minority group in Australia, a lot of us came as refugees to escape the religious persecution.&rdquo; &ldquo;This is my place of worship and it&rsquo;s not acceptable to me that these Khalistan supporters are vandalising it with their hate messages without any fear,&rdquo; she said.

Hindu Council of Australia&rsquo;s Victoria chapter President Makrand Bhagwat told the website, &ldquo;I can&rsquo;t tell you how upset I am for witnessing a second Hindu Temple vandalised for Khalistan propaganda.&rdquo; &ldquo;Our Temples vandalism is deplorable and should not be tolerated by the wider community.&rdquo; Melbourne Hindu community member Sachin Mahate said, &ldquo;If these Khalistan supporters have the courage they should go and draw graffiti on the Victorian Parliament building rather than target peaceful Hindu communities' religious places.&rdquo; Victorian Liberal Party MP Brad Battin said, &ldquo;In no way, our future can be built on hate when it has been built on working together for so long.&rdquo; &ldquo;There is no place in Victoria or Australia for this kind of behaviour that we are seeing here.&rdquo; &ldquo;Victoria is and will remain the best multicultural state in the world as long as people learn to work together not against each other,&rdquo; added Battin.
On January 12, the Swaminarayan temple in Melbourne was defaced by 'anti-social elements' with anti-India graffiti.
BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha Australia in a statement appealing for peace has said that they are deeply saddened by this incident.
"We are deeply saddened by the anti-India graffiti at the gates of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Mill Park, Melbourne, Australia by anti-social elements. The BAPS temple in Mill Park, like all temples of BAPS worldwide, is an abode of peace, harmony, equality, selfless service, and universal Hindu values," they said in a statement.

The temple, which will be officially open to the public from October 5 -- the day of the Dussehra festival, welcomes people of all faiths and has allowed entry to worshippers and other visitors for viewing the 16 deities and other interior works, the Gulf News reported on Sunday.
The soft opening of the temple was held on September 1 with the temple management activating the QR-code based appointment booking system via its website.
From day one, the temple has been receiving a large number of visitors, especially over the weekends. The restricted entry has been regulated through QR-coded appointments for crowd management and to ensure social distancing, the report said.
The temple is open from 6.30 am to 8 pm.
Appointments for most weekends till the end of October have already been booked. The booking system will continue till the end of October after which members of the public will be free to visit the temple any time during its opening hours.
The only activity that is currently being done is the chanting of Vedic shlokas by a group of 14 pandits, who have specially come over from India.
This takes place every day from 7.30 am to 11 am and again from 3.30 pm till 8.30 pm. Visitors are allowed to take part in the chants.
Majority of the deities are installed in the main prayer hall that has a large 3D-printed pink lotus unfurling across the central dome.
Located in what is described as the ‘Worship Village’ in Jebel Ali that houses several churches and the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, the temple has also installed the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Book of the Sikhs, in August.

As the Gyanvapi Mosque-Shringar Gauri temple issue gathers steam, Asaduddin Owaisi commented on the case. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief also said that the Muslim community in India was never a vote bank, and will never be.

If we could, then why would the Indian Parliament have so few Muslim members? When was the last time that a Muslim MP was elected from Gujarat? If we could change government... the Babri Masjid issue has been adjudicated by the courts, and now Gyanvapi Mosque issue has erupted. You are free to disagree with me," he added.
His comments came in the wake of a local Varanasi court allowing videographic survey of the mosque. The court is hearing petitions by some Delhi-based women for permission to perform daily worship of Hindu deities located on the outer wall of the Gyanvapi Masjid.
The mosque is located next to Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath temple. Owaisi earlier said that the Gyanvapi mosque's status is protected by Places of Worship Act, 1991.
