The death toll in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district, where a private bus was buried under the debris of a massive landslide on Tuesday evening, increased to 16 with the recovery of a child's body on Wednesday morning, officials said.
Search and rescue operations to trace people buried under the debris continued on Wednesday after a huge portion of a mountain gave way and fell on the moving bus in the Bhalughat area near Berthin around 6.40 pm on Tuesday.
"The death toll has increased to 16 with the recovery of one more body today," Bilaspur SP Sandeep Dhawal told PTI.
The rescue operations, which were halted late last night due to poor visibility and mud sliding, resumed on Wednesday morning with two teams from the NDRF, locals, police, home guards, and firemen engaged in the search.
A manual search is underway with dog squads being pressed into service to search the victims along with machinery to remove the heavy rocks, officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) told PTI Videos.
The deceased have been identified as Naksh, Aarav, Sanjeev, Vimla, Kamlesh, Kanta Devi, Anjana, Bakshi Ram, Narender Sharma, Krishan Lal, Chuni Lal, Rajnish, Sonu, Sharif Khan and Praveen Kumar, they said, adding that the body of the child found on Wednesday morning is yet to be identified.
The deceased include four members of a family -- the wives of two brothers and two children of one sibling -- who were returning home after attending a function.
The children of the other sibling -- Arushi and Shaurya -- were among those rescued and have been sent home after treatment at AIIMS Bilaspur, an official said.
"My wife and two children, and my brother's wife and their two children, were returning home from a function when the tragedy struck. Only my children are alive now," Raj Kumar, father of Arushi and Shaurya, said.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who took stock of the rescue operations at the accident site and also met the victims' families on Tuesday night, said, "The region has been witnessing rain for the past two days, and it is evident that the accident took place due to the sliding of the mountain following heavy downpour. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident." "Himachal is a hilly state with young mountains, where construction of big roads, bridges and tunnels is taking place. So, there is a need to review whether the present development model is sustainable," he said, adding that the state suffered losses of Rs 20,000 crore due to different natural disasters since 2023.
The region has been lashed by intermittent rain since Monday, making the fragile mountain slopes unstable.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah and J P Nadda, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among the leaders who condoled the loss of lives in the incident.
Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured would get Rs 50,000.
Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday night directed officials to expedite the rescue operations, a statement said.&nbsp;

Deputy Commissioner, Mandi, Apoorv Devgan told PTI that three bodies have been recovered while two persons have been rescued, Officials said the rains led to floods in Son and Bharand drains in Dharampur in Mandi district, resulting in flooding of a bus stand, damaging a workshop, pump houses, shops and over 20 buses.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri in his Facebook post said, "Dharampur bus stand, over two dozen HRTC buses, shops, pump house and workshop has been damaged".
In Shimla, several vehicles were buried following a landslide near Himland in the heart of the city and the main circular road was blocked causing inconvenience to school- going children.
"It was raining heavily and around 1 am, we heard a deafening sound with trees and debris sliding down and immediately moved our vehicles to escape", Gautam and Rahul Shukla, who were sleeping in their vehicle parked near Himland when the landslide occurred, said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced an immediate relief of Rs 1,500 crore for rain-affected Himachal Pradesh.
Modi, who took stock of the flood and landslides situation in the state, also announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the next of kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
He first conducted an aerial survey of affected areas and then held a meeting in Kangra to review the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken as well as assess the damage.
In the meeting with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, BJP leaders, affected families and people engaged in rescue services in Kangra, Modi assured all help for restoration and rebuilding of infrastructure in the affected areas.
The financial assistance of Rs 1,500 crore will be the advance release of the second instalment of SDRF and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.
Modi asked for a multi-dimensional view to be taken to get the entire region and people back on its feet. These would be done through multiple ways, like rebuilding homes through PM Awas Yojana, restoration of national highways, rebuilding schools, provision of relief under PMNRF along with release of mini kits for livestock.
To ensure uninterrupted education, schools will be able to report and geotag damages, enabling timely assistance under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
Construction of recharge structures for water harvesting to help collect and store rainwater will be done. These efforts will improve groundwater levels and support better water management.
The Centre has already sent inter-ministerial teams to Himachal Pradesh to assess the extent of damage, and based on their detailed report further assistance will be considered.
Modi also met families affected by the calamity. He expressed condolences and deep sorrow to those who lost their relatives. A photograph of the prime minister holding 11-month-old Neetika, the lone survivor in her family, has also gone viral on the internet.
Modi said that the Centre will work closely with the Himachal Pradesh government at this difficult time and extend all possible assistance.
Recognizing the critical need to support the agricultural community, additional assistance will be provided specifically targeted at farmers who currently lack power connections, he said and added that geotagging of damaged houses will be done under the Under the PM Awas Yojana to assess the damage accurately and ensure faster delivery of aid.
He said all assistance under disaster management rules are being made including advance disbursements to the states. He appreciated the efforts of the personnel of NDRF, SDRF, Army, state administration and other service-oriented organisations in relief and response work.
The central government will further review the assessment based on the memorandum of the state as well as the report of the central teams, he said.
Modi acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured that the Centre will make all efforts to address the situation.
Earlier, he also watched a presentation on the prevailing situation in Himachal Pradesh state after cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains wreaked havoc in the state and was briefed about the same.
Himachal Pradesh suffered losses to the tune of Rs 4,122 crore due to cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides triggered by heavy rains from June 20 to September 8 and 370 people have died in rain-related incidents and road accidents in the state, according to the state emergency operation centre.
Out of the 370 fatalities, 205 were due to rain-related incidents, which include 43 deaths from landslides, 17 from cloudbursts, and nine from flash floods. Additionally, 41 people are still reported missing, while road accidents have accounted for 165 deaths.
As of Tuesday morning, 619 roads, including four national highways, were closed in the state and 1748 power transformers and 461 water supply schemes were disrupted.
The monsoon has caused significant damage, with a total of 6,344 houses, 461 shops and factories being fully or partially affected, besides massive damage to government and private lands.
Ahead of Modi's visit, Chief Minister Sukhu said he would urge the prime minister to grant relaxation in the Forest Conservation Act to facilitate grant of forest land to people who have been rendered landless due to the monsoon disaster.
Sukhu said he would urge Modi to initiate discussions on formulation of a strategy for sustainable development in hill states.

About 350 stranded Manimahesh pilgrims were on Friday evacuated from Bharmaur to Chamba in Himachal Pradesh by IAF helicopters, officials said.
Hundreds of pilgrims are still stranded in different parts of Chamba district, especially in Bharmaur assembly constituency, which has been disconnected by roads following several landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rain in the last week of August.
Deputy Commissioner, Chamba, Mukesh Repaswal said two helicopters of IAF have been pressed into service and all the stranded pilgrims would be evacuated on Friday.
Seventeen pilgrims have died so far since the start of Manimahesh Yatra on August 15 and hundreds of pilgrims are still stranded in different parts of Chamba district especially Bharmaur area.
However, there are unverified reports that that the death toll could be far higher.
The Manimahesh Lake is situated at an altitude of 13,000 feet at the foot of the Kailash.
Himachal Pradesh has been battling floods following heavy rains and landslides in many areas.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu conducted an aerial survey of flood affected areas of Kullu and Manali and gave necessary directions to the officers regarding restoration and opening of blocked roads.
In Bilsapur, about 14 families were shifted to safer places in Banali village in Naina Devi assembly constituency after their houses developed cracks following a landslide on Wednesday.
After the landslide in Banali village, two families of Dilwar Singh and Surendra Singh, whose houses were endangered were shifted on Wednesday.
Later, due to heavy rains, cracks were seen in other houses too and 14 houses have been declared unsafe to live in.
A total of 1217 roads are closed in the state. While 281 were blocked in Mandi, 261 in Shimla, 231 are in Kullu and 187 in Chamba district, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.
National Highway-3 (Mandi-Dharampur road), NH-5 (Old Hindustan-Tibet road), NH-305 (Aut-Sainj road) and NH-505 (Khab to Gramphu) were closed.
Trains plying on the Shimla-Kalka track have been cancelled till Friday following landslips on the track.
Light to moderate rains lashed a few parts of the state and Baggi in Mandi district received 61.3 mm of rain since Thursday evening, followed by Karsog 24.2 mm, Dhaulakuan 18.0 mm, Buntar 16 mm, Jot 14.2 mm, Gohar, Rampur and Manali 13 mm each, Naina Devi 12.8 mm and Jogindernagar 10 mm.
The local Met office has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in isolated places of the state on Monday and Tuesday.
Since the onset of monsoon in Himachal on June 20, the state has witnessed 95 flash floods, 45 cloudbursts and 132 major landslide incidents.
At least 355 people have died in rain-related incidents and road accidents, while 49 are missing since the monsoon began.
Rains have also disrupted 1868 power transformers and 669 water supply schemes across the state, the SEOC said on Thursday evening.
The state has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 3787 crore this monsoon so far, according to official data.

It has also issued an 'orange' alert for intense spells of rain in Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Solan, Mandi and Kullu districts and Shimla city.
Strong currents of the Beas river washed away a multi-storey hotel and four shops in Manali in Kullu district in the early hours of Tuesday. With the river in spate, the gushing waters entered Alu ground in Manali and the Manali-Leh highway was blocked at several points, according to the officials.
Water from Ghanvi Khud (drain) entered houses in Kullu.
Two buildings housing about 40 shops collapsed in the Balichowki area of Mandi district late on Monday night. There were no casualties as the building was vacated earlier after it became dangerous.
Kanvi in Kinnaur district was hit by flash floods.
Various district administrations have ordered the closure of all educational institutions.
An order to this effect was issued by Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan and Banjar, Kullu district administrations on Monday evening. The Shimla district administration ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions on Tuesday morning.
Shimla district has been pounded by rain since Monday morning. The downpour triggered landslides and uprooted trees, leading to road closures.
The meteorological department has forecast more heavy rain during the next 24 hours. Therefore, considering the safety of the students, educational institutions will remain closed in the district on Tuesday, Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap said in an official order.
A total of 795 roads were closed in the state as on Monday night and around 956 power supply transformers and 517 water supply schemes were disrupted, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.
Out of the 795 closed roads, 289 are in Mandi district, 214 in Chamba and 132 in Kullu. National Highway (NH) 3 (Mandi-Dharampur road) and NH 305 (Aut-Sainj) are also closed, it said.
Between June 20 and August 25, at least 156 people have died in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh while 38 have gone missing, according to the SEOC.
The state has witnessed 77 flash floods, 41 cloudbursts and 81 major landslides so far. It has incurred losses to the tune of Rs 2,394 crore in rain-related incidents, the SEOC data showed.
Himachal Pradesh received 703.7 mm of rainfall from June 1 to August 25 against an average of 577.9 mm, an excess of 22 per cent. The state has received 44 per cent excess rainfall in August so far.&nbsp;

Moderate to heavy rains have been reported in several parts of the state since Sunday night. A total of 484 roads, including two national highways, remained closed for vehicular traffic on Sunday night.
Among these, 245 roads were closed in Mandi district and 102 in the adjoining Kullu. The National Highway 154 A connecting Chamba and Pathankot, and the NH 305, connecting Aut and Sainj, were also closed, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said. According to officials, 941 power supply transformers and 95 water supply schemes have been disrupted in the state.

A bridge and three shops were washed away by flash floods when an overnight cloudburst hit Kanon village in Kullu district, officials said on Tuesday.
In view of continuous rains triggering landslides at several places, the district administration has closed all educational institutions, including schools, colleges and anganwadi centres in Kullu and Banjar sub-divisions on Tuesday.
The decision was taken to ensure safety of students, said Torul S Raveesh, Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson, District Disaster Management Authority, Kullu.
In Shimla city, around 40 people were safely evacuated late on Monday night after a massive landslide struck close to Ramchandra Chowk.
While no loss of life was reported, parts of a building's roof was damaged. Trees were also uprooted near Ashiyana Regency in Chota Shimla area.
Kullu and Banjar sub-divisional officers reported cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in their respective jurisdictions. These resulted in road blockages, footbridges being washed away and other similar damages, they said.
Heavy rains damaged a footbridge, a shop and a vehicle, besides agricultural land in Shilhabudhani and Tarswan gram panchayats in Padhar area of Mandi district.
According to Shilhabudhani pradhan Prem Singh and Tarswan pradhan Jai Singh, all the nalas in the area are in spate, and the residents have moved to safer places last night.
Several places in Himachal Pradesh were lashed by moderate to heavy rains. Jubberhatti in the suburbs of Shimla city recorded 73 mm rainfall since Monday night, followed by Amb 56 mm, Bhuntar 44.8 mm, Bilaspur 40.2 mm, Shimla 38 mm, Kasol 33 mm, Seobagh 32 mm, Kothi 25.4 mm, Bhareri 23 mm and Kufri 21.2 mm.
A total of 389 roads were closed for vehicular traffic in the state, including two national highways, on Monday evening. Of these, 193 roads were in Mandi district and 104 in the adjoining Kullu, said State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
According to the SEOC, 760 power supply transformers and 186 water supply schemes have been disrupted.
Since the onset of monsoon in Himachal Pradesh on June 20 till date, the state has incurred losses to the tune of Rs 2,194 crore due to rain-related incidents, officials said on Monday evening.

Road connectivity to about 15 villages was snapped following a massive landslide on Aut-Largi-Sainj road near Pagal Nala in Kullu district, reports said.
Dhaulakuan received 113 mm of rain since Sunday evening, followed by Jot 70.8 mm, Malraon 70 mm, Palampur 58.7 mm, Jatton Barrage 49.4 mm, Paonta Sahib 40.6 mm, Murari Devi 33 mm, Gohar 32 mm, Nahan 30.1 mm, Sarahan 28.5 mm and Dharamshala 24.7 mm.
Sundernagar and Murari Devi witnessed thunderstorm, while Tabo Reckong Peo and Kufri experienced gusty winds with speeds ranging from 37 to 44 kilometres per hour.
The local meteorological office has issued a 'yellow' warning for heavy rains at isolated places in the state till August 24, except on August 21.
A total of 400 roads -- including National Highway 3 (Mandi-Dharampur road), NH 305 (Aut-Sainj road) and NH-505 (Khab to Gramphoo) -- have been closed for traffic. Of these, 192 roads are in Mandi district and 86 in the adjoining Kullu, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
It said 883 power supply transformers and 122 water supply schemes have been disrupted.

Shimla, August 14 (PTI): The Indian Army successfully rescued four individuals following a flash flood incident in Himachal Pradesh, as per an official statement released on Thursday. The rescue operation took place after a cloudburst led to flash floods in the Rishi Dogri valley, located in Kinnaur district, on Wednesday evening. The flooding inundated a bridge over the Sutlej river, which was part of an active road construction site under the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) near Gangthang Bralam.
Upon receiving an urgent request from the superintendent of police in Kinnaur, the Indian Army quickly deployed a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) team. Despite challenging conditions, including darkness, swift water currents, and unstable terrain, the team reached the affected site. There, they found four civilians stranded on the river's far bank, according to the statement.
The HADR team skillfully navigated the situation, using lights to facilitate the nocturnal rescue operation and guiding the civilians to elevated, safer locations. An injured individual was also evacuated and transported to the Regional Hospital in Reckong Peo for treatment.
The Army reported that modern equipment, notably the Logistics Drone High Altitude (LDHA) system, was employed to deliver vital supplies like food and coconut water to those stranded on the opposite side of the floodwaters, ensuring their sustenance through the night.

As per preliminary investigations, a falling rock hit the vehicle following which the vehicle fell into the gorge. They were about a kilometre away from their house when the car plunged into the gorge.
The villagers rushed to the spot as soon as the heard the screams and immediately informed the police and started the rescue operations.
Rajesh, a teacher in Banikhet, his wife Hanso (36) his son, Deepak (15), and daughter, Aarti (17), brother-in-law, Hemraj, and another person the family gave lift to in their car died in the accident.
The accident took place around 9:30 on Thursday night and it took almost six hours to recover the bodies. A case has been registered and further investigations are underway, police said.

A relief camp has been set up at Vipasha Sadan as several houses have been damaged and some people have shifted to safer places and taken shelter at homes of their friends and relatives, he said.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and home guard have been pressed into rescue operations, while teams of the Public Works Department, Electricity and the Jal Shakti Department are also on the field to clear roads and restore power supply, the DC added.

A massive landslide was reported in Dhalli in the suburbs of Shimla, where a chunk of hill came down sliding. No casualty was reported.
According to reports, about half a dozen houses were left in a precarious state after a four-lane road embankment on the Kaithlighat-Dhalli stretch collapsed in Lindidhar village, damaging a large number of apple trees.
The safety wall had collapsed earlier also, but no steps were taken to bolster it, locals alleged, and blamed the National Highway Authority of India for the incident.
Many families in Lindidhar village have been forced to leave their homes and take shelter elsewhere.
The place is near Bhatta Kuffar where a five-story building collapsed Monday morning.
Heavy rain claimed the lives of about 10,000 chickens in a poultry farm in Majra Mansoh village under Gram Panchayat Dhamandhari in Una district early Thursday.
Ranveer Singh, who owned the chicken farm, said his field was inundated with water, leaving him with no time for any rescue attempt.
Villagers said waterlogging in the Majra Mansoh area has been a perennial problem in the area.
"The government is alive to the problems being faced by the people and is making every effort to provide relief to the disaster victims in the worst-affected areas of Mandi," Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said in a statement.
The Public Works Department has pressed into service 84 excavators, one robot, three dozers and 36 tippers to clear the debris, Sukhu said.
Due to road closures and poor network connectivity, field coordination remains a challenge, and Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) has been activated by the Department of Telecommunications DoT in the Thunag area. Apart from this, ISATs have also been mobilised to the area for emergency communication, he said.
The Jal Shakti department has activated gravity-based small schemes after chlorination to ensure a safe drinking water supply in some villages.
Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and police and home guards are engaged in search and rescue operations in Mandi.
A total of 246 kits of ration have been air dropped in Thunag and Janjheli, Sukhu said.
Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Mandi, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Jairam Thakur said that his constituency, Seraj, has been the worst-hit, with 500 houses suffering damage.
He alleged that he had been trying to contact the CM since morning, but there was no response.
Moderate to heavy rain, meanwhile, continued to lash parts of Himachal Pradesh.
Pachhad in Sirmaur district received 133.3 mm of rain since Wednesday evening, the highest, followed by Mehra Barsar 92 mm, Jubbarhatti 59.4 mm, Una 58.6 mm, Jatton Barrage 56.6 mm, Baijnath 55 mm, Shimla 45.9 mm, Nahan 42.5 mm, Brahmani 42.2 mm, Kangra 37.6 mm, Baggi 37.5 mm, Murari Devi 34.6 mm, and Palampur 32 mm.
The weather office has issued an Orange Alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rains in three to seven districts from July 5 to 7, and a Yellow Alert, warning of heavy rain, across the state, barring the tribal Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts till the weekend.
It also warned of low to moderate flash-flood risk in parts of Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, Shimla and Sirmaur in the next 24 hours.
Sarahan in Shimla district was coldest at night with a low of 14.7 degrees Celsius, while Hamirpur was hottest during the day, recording a high of 33.9 degrees Celsius.

With the recovery of two more bodies, the death toll in the cloudburst and flash flood-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi has mounted to 13 while search is underway for 29 others missing, officials said on Thursday.
Ten cloudbursts, three flash floods and a landslide were witnessed in different parts of Mandi district on Tuesday.
Officials said two bodies were recovered this morning. While seven bodies were recovered from Gohar, five were from Thunag and one in Karsog subdivisions of Mandi district.
Over 150 houses, 104 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges and several roads were damaged in the calamities. A total of 162 cattle perished in the calamities, while 370 people, including 316 in Mandi, were rescued and five relief camps have been set up, the state emergency operation centre (SEOC), said.
The Manali-Keylong road was blocked following floods in a drain near Solang Nallah and the traffic has been diverted through Rohtang Pass. Men and machinery has been deployed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), officials said.
A total of 261 roads, including 186 in Mandi district, are closed for traffic in the state while 599 transformers and 797 water supply schemes have been disrupted due to heavy rains in the past few days, the SEOC added.
Both Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur had visited the affected areas on Wednesday. Sukhu assured locals that if any government land is available nearby, it will be allotted to those who lost their homes. "In case the land falls under forests, the matter will be taken up with the Union government," he added.
Thakur said the number of missing people could rise.
Rations should be air-dropped in areas where roads have been damaged, he said.

The weather office has issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rains in isolated areas across the state for five days from July 5 to 9 and warned of low to moderate flash-flood risk in parts of six districts of Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur in the next 24 hours.
