A federal US judge sanctioned former president Donald Trump and his lawyers nearly $1 million for a "frivolous" lawsuit claiming Hillary Clinton had tried to rig the 2016 election.
District Judge John Middlebrooks said the Republican, who is seeking to return to the White House in 2024, exhibited a "continuing pattern of misuse of the courts" and had filed the suit "in order to dishonestly advance a political narrative."
The lawsuit, which Middlebrooks tossed out last year, claimed that Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump, and others had created a false narrative that his campaign had colluded with Russia.
Trump had sought $70 million in damages.
But the suit "should never have been brought," Middlebrooks said in the 45-page written court order.
"Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start. No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for a political purpose, none of the counts of the amended complaint stated a cognizable legal claim," the judge wrote.
Middlebrooks wrote that Trump is "a prolific and sophisticated litigant who is repeatedly using the courts to seek revenge on political adversaries.
"He is the mastermind of strategic abuse of the judicial process, and he cannot be seen as a litigant blindly following the advice of a lawyer. He knew full well the impact of his actions."

Abedin recounts that the assault took place after a dinner that she went to with a few senators and their aides. &ldquo;I ended up walking out with one of the senators, and soon we stopped in front of his building and he invited me in for coffee,&rdquo; she writes, as reported by The Guardian. &ldquo;Once inside, he told me to make myself comfortable on the couch.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Then, in an instant, it all changed. He plopped down to my right, put his left arm around my shoulder, and kissed me, pushing his tongue into my mouth, pressing me back on the sofa,&rdquo; Abedin writes.
&ldquo;I was so utterly shocked, I pushed him away. All I wanted was for the last 10 seconds to be erased.&rdquo; According to Abedin, the senator seemed surprised by her reaction and apologised, saying he had &ldquo;misread&rdquo; her. But then he asked her if she wanted to stay.

Trump has been pressing a months long campaign against mail-in voting this November. More states are encouraging mail-in voting to keep voters safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. Trump has baselessly claimed widespread mail voting will lead to massive fraud.

Washington, PTI: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday again declined to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the November 3 presidential election.
"We are going to have to see what happens," Trump said at a news conference, responding to a question about whether he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power. "You know that I have been complaining very strongly about the ballots and the ballots are a disaster." Trump has been pressing a monthslong campaign against mail-in voting this November by tweeting and speaking out critically about the practice. More states are encouraging mail-in voting to keep voters safe amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The president, who uses mail-in voting himself, has tried to distinguish between states that automatically send mail ballots to all registered voters and those, like Florida, that send them only to voters who request a mail ballot.
Trump has baselessly claimed widespread mail voting will lead to massive fraud. The five states that routinely send mail ballots to all voters have seen no significant fraud.
Trump on Wednesday appeared to suggest that if states got "rid of" the unsolicited mailing of ballots, there would be no concern about fraud or peaceful transfers of power.
"You will have a very peaceful -- there will not be a transfer frankly," Trump said. "There will be a continuation. The ballots are out of control, you know it, and you know, who knows it better than anybody else? The Democrats know it better than anybody else." In a July interview, Trump similarly refused to commit to accepting the results and he made similar comments ahead of the 2016 election.
"I have to see. Look ... I have to see," Trump told Chris Wallace during a wide-ranging July interview on "Fox News Sunday". "No, I am not going to just say yes. I am not going to say no and I did not the last time either." The Biden campaign responded on Wednesday, as it did after Trump's July comments: "The American people will decide this election. And the United States government is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House." It is highly unusual that a sitting president would express less than complete confidence in the American democracy's electoral process. But Trump, four years ago, when in the closing stages of his race against Hillary Clinton, also declined to commit to honouring the election results if the Democrat won.
When asked during an October 2016 debate about whether he would abide by the voters' will, Trump responded that he would "keep you in suspense". It is unlikely that any chaos in states with universal mail-in voting will cause the election result to be inaccurately tabulated, as Trump has suggested.
