The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a split verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the hijab ban imposed by the Karanataka government on girls attending eductional institutions. In view of split verdict on hijab ban, a bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia directed placing appeals against Karnataka HC order before CJI for constitution of larger bench.&nbsp; While Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed appeals against Karnataka HC verdict refusing to lift ban on hijab in educational institutions of state, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia says allowed appeals.

Celebrated boxer Nikhat Zareen who recently won the World Championship Gold in Istanbul has weighed in on the significant controversy surrounding girls wearing headscarves or hijab in educational institutes. While speaking to NDTV, Nikhat said that the choice of attire for anyone should be entirely personal.

In a 2013 interview, Nikhat revealed that coming from a conservative Muslim community resulted in both father and daughter getting castigated. Zareen now talking about the Hijzb row which erupted in Karnataka over girls wearing headscarves to schools and colleges said, "If they want to wear hijab and follow their religion, it's their personal choice. I don't have any problem with them wearing hijabs. After all, it's their own choice. I am okay with that."

An Army-run school in Baramulla district has stoked a controversy by asking its staff to avoid wearing hijab during school hours, prompting criticism by the Jammu and Kashmir’s mainstream political parties.
In a circular dated April 25, the principal of the Dagger Parivar School Baramulla, a school set up under the aegis of the Army and the Indrani Balan Foundation, asked the teachers to avoid wearing hijab during school hours "so that students can feel comfortable and are forthcoming to interact with teachers and staff".
However, on Wednesday, the school issued an amended version of the circular, replacing the word hijab (head cover) with ‘niqab’ (face veil).
The April 25-dated circular was been widely shared on social media.
Efforts to seek comments from the school management, including the principal, did not materialise.
Former J and K chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned diktat.
"I condemn this letter issuing diktats on hijab. J&K may be ruled by BJP but it’s certainly not like any other state where they bulldoze the houses of minorities & not allow them the freedom to dress as they want. Our girls will not give up their right to choose," Mehbooba tweeted.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said it was an attempt to gain political mileage.
"In this country, everyone has the freedom to follow his or her religion. It is enshrined in our constitution that we are a secular country which means all religions are equal. I don't think any government should interfere in this.
“This is playing with such a danger that can piss problems for the country. We would like that such decisions should not be taken. The people of all faiths should be free to follow their own religion," the former J and K CM said.
"We hope that the effort to bring Karnataka into Jammu and Kashmir is stopped forthwith," he added.
Abdullah said it was wrong on part of the school to issue such a diktat.
"The reason given is just not right. This school did not start yesterday. These teachers (who are wearing hijab) must have been interacting with the students earlier also. What changed overnight?” he asked.

The Udupi Muslim girls whose petitions seeking permission to wear Hijab inside the classrooms were dismissed by the Karnataka High Court said on Tuesday they will not go to college without hijab and fight the case legally till they get "justice".
They also claimed the verdict was 'unconstitutional'.
"We had approached the High Court seeking permission to wear hijab in the classrooms. The order has come against us. We will not go to the college without hijab but we will fight for it. We will try all the legal ways. We will fight for justice and our rights," one of the girls said in a press conference in this coastal town.
"The verdict which came today is unconstitutional...the constitution itself provides us (our rights) to follow my religion and whatever I can wear," the girl stated and also referred to a government order on February 5 banning any cloth that disturbed peace, harmony and public order on the campus.
According to them, the circular came only after they approached the HC.
Accusing the government of 'creating an issue' by issuing a circular, the girls alleged it was done to create pressure.
"How much issue they made! Oh my God! They made an issue for all the colleges. They have denied education to all the girls. This was done to create pressure...," the girl charged.

"We are of the considered opinion that wearing of Hijab by Muslim women does not form a part of essential religious practice in Islamic faith," Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi who headed the full bench of the High Court said reading out portion of the order.
The other two judges in the panel were Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice J M Khazi.
The bench also maintained that the government has power to issue impugned government order dated February 5, 2022 and no case is made out for its invalidation. By the said order, the state government had banned wearing clothes which disturb equality, integrity and public order in schools and colleges.
The court also rejected the plea to initiate a disciplinary inquiry against the college, its principal and a teacher.
"In the above circumstances, all these writ petitions being devoid of merits are liable to be and accordingly are dismissed. In view of the dismissal of the writ petition, all the pending applications fell into insignificance and are accordingly disposed off," the bench said in its order.
On January 1, six girl students of a college in Udupi attended a press conference held by Campus Front of India (CFI) in the coastal town protesting against the college authorities denying them entry into the classroom wearing Hijab.
This was four days after they requested the principal permission to wear Hijabs in classrooms which was not allowed. Till then, students used to wear Hijab to the campus and entered the classroom after removing the scarves, the college principal Rudre Gowda had said.

Why is hijab being single out and Muslim students are being asked to choose between faith and education, the lawyer for Muslim girls argued in the court.
The petitioners pointed out that “Hindu girls wearing bangles and Christian girls wearing cross are not sent out". What about ghoonghat, turban or cross? the petitioners asked the court.
The court deferred the hearing for Thursday.
Alleging discrimination against Muslim girls purely based on religion, the students' lawyer also underlined that “no other religious symbol is considered in the government Order."
Controversy over hijab has been simmering in Karnataka for over a month. A number of schools and colleges have been denying entry to Muslims girls coming in hijab.

“Today was our test and we are not allowed to go in. For us, practising our faith is as much important as education and Burqa is part of our faith. We will not let remove it,” a girl told reporters.
In Vijayapura, the girls were not let inside the campus as they refused to remove their burqa. Similar incidents happened in Bijapur, Kalaburagi and Yadgir.

Muslim girls wearing headscarves are not hurting anyone, the petitioners' lawyer said, pointing out that religious freedoms can be barred only when it interferes with public order.
The high court will continue hearing the petition on Tuesday.

The special leave petition has been filed by a student who said the interim order only affects <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/github-user-banned-for-posting-doctored-photos-of-muslim-women-case-registered-1641120142628" target="_blank">Muslim women</a> and&nbsp; has in effect suspended article 25(1) for the Muslim community in Karnataka. Subjected to public order, Article 25(1) guarantees&nbsp;right to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion.

The hijab-saffron shawl row in the junior colleges at Kundapur in Karnataka's Udupi district continued on Monday, with students in two junior colleges trying to defy the government order mandating uniforms stipulated by the state government or respective managements of the institutions.
The state education department had issued the order on Saturday.

The students said they will wear the shawls if hijab-wearing girls were allowed in classes. They agreed to enter the classes removing their shawls only after the principal assured them that no hijab-wearing students will be allowed to enter classrooms.
At the Government PU College in Kundapur also, the principal talked to Muslim girl students who came wearing hijabs and explained to them the government’s order.
As the students continued to insist on wearing the headscarves, they were asked to go to a separate room arranged for them.
There was widespread criticism against the way the girls were made to protest outside the college gate last week.
Two persons were arrested on charges of brandishing knives during the hijab-saffron shawl protest by students at Kundapur town in Udupi, police said on Monday.
They were arrested near the government pre-university college on a tip-off that five people arrived at the spot with lethal weapons to create communal tension on Friday, police sources said.
The accused have been identified as Abdul Majeed (32) and Rajab (41), both hailing from Gangolli in Kundapur taluk. Police are on the lookout for three other persons suspected to be involved in the case.
Majeed is an accused in seven criminal cases while Rajab has one case pending against him at Gangolli police station.
A case has been registered against them at the Kundapur police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the sources said.

The govt order said the students have to wear the dress chosen by the College Development Committee or the appellate committee of the administrative board of the pre-university colleges, which come under the pre-university education department.
The order further said that in the event of administrative committee not selecting a uniform, clothes which disturb equality, integrity and public law and order should not be worn.
