Om Prakash Chautala, former Haryana chief minister and Indian National Lok Dal president, passed away at the age of 89 due to a cardiac arrest in Gurugram.

Chautala, a five-time chief minister of Haryana and former deputy prime minister Devi Lal's son, suffered a cardiac arrest at his Gurugram home.

Indian National Lok Dal president and five-time Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala died here on Friday at the age of 89.
Chautala, who was former deputy prime minister Devi Lal's son, suffered a cardiac arrest at his house here and was immediately rushed to a hospital but could not be saved, a party spokesperson told PTI.
He breathed his last at around 12 noon in Medanta hospital, a senior police officer said.
Chautala, who came from a prominent political family in Haryana and was face of a prominent regional outfit, had been facing age-related health issues in the recent past.
He is survived by two sons and three daughters. His wife Sneh Lata had passed away over five years ago.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were among a host of leaders who condoled the demise of Chautala.

Expressing grief, Modi said on X, "He (Chautala) was active in the state politics for many years and strove constantly to advance the work of Devi Lal."

Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda recalled that when Chautala was the chief minister, he was the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana assembly.
Chautala served the people of the state. There are many good memories with him, he said, adding that he was like his elder brother.
Congress leader Randeep Singh Hooda and Kumari Seja also condoled the death of Chautala.
Born on January 1, 1935, Om Prakash Chautala was the eldest of the five children of former deputy prime minister Chaudhary Devi Lal.
Chautala left studies after primary education. In 2013, when Chautala was lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with the teacher recruitment scam, he passed the class 10 and then class 12 examination at the age of 82.
He was jailed in 2013 in connection with the teacher recruitment scam case and released in 2021.
Chautala, his son Ajay Chautala, and 53 others, including IAS officer Sanjiv Kumar, were convicted and sentenced in the case of illegal recruitment of 3,206 junior basic teachers in 2000.
The former Haryana chief minister's younger son Abhay Singh Chautala is a senior leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) while elder one Ajay Singh Chautala, a former MP, heads the Jannayak Janta Party, which was born after a vertical split in the party in December 2018 after a family feud.
Abhay's son Arjun is a Haryana MLA while Ajay Chautala's sons Dushyant and Digvijay are JJP leaders. Dushyant Chautala also served as Haryana's Deputy Chief Minister.
Chautala's party INLD had also remained an ally of BJP in the past. The INDL has been out of power since 2005 in Haryana.

Addressing a rally in Chhachhrauli in Yamunanagar in favour of the BJP's Ambala parliamentary seat candidate Banto Kataria, the chief minister said, "The works done by our double-engine government during the past 10 years have taken the country and state ahead." Targeting the Congress, he said earlier when it was in power, its leaders used to give mere slogans and make hollow promises to befool the public in the run-up to elections.
"What the (BJP's) double-engine government promises, it delivers. We have taken steps to make the lives of people better. We have improved road connectivity," he said.
The BJP's policy is right, intentions are right and leadership is also right, he said.
Taking on the opposition INDIA bloc, he said, "if you look at the 'ghamandiya gathbandhan', neither its policy is right nor its intent and till today no one knows what kind of leadership it has." He said India's prestige is up globally under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
Appealing to people to re-elect the BJP, he said, "In 2014 and 2019 you brought the BJP-led government to power and now we have a new India, a secure and strong India under Modi's leadership." Prime Minister Modi says India has to be made a developed nation by 2047 and in this all people of the country have to contribute, Saini said.

Approximately three lakh women from Haryana are part of this initiative, with 5,000 sisters set to receive drone training. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday launched the portal for implementation of the Haryana Urban Built Plan Reform Policy for those seeking houses under the 'Mukhyamantri Shehri Awas Yojana.' This initiative will offer plots at concessional rates to eligible individuals, furthering the government's commitment to affordable housing for all.
To secure a plot under the scheme, the portal will be live starting from today that is February 1, 2024. Eligible applicants can register on the Housing for All website to initiate the process of availing of benefits under the 'Mukhyamantri Shahri Awas Yojana'. During the initial phase, 10,542 plots will be allocated to eligible individuals across 14 cities. This allocation process is expected to conclude within approximately 15 days.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to prioritize the allocation of plots to applicants from nomadic castes, widows, and Scheduled Castes during the allotment process. Additionally, he urged swift action to ensure that applicants who have applied for flats receive their allocations promptly.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal in view of the positive impact of the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana' initiated by Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi with the objective of providing a house to every family, 'Mukhyamantri Shahri Awas Yojana' was launched by the Haryana Government in September 2023. This initiative targets urban families without homes and with an annual income of less than Rs 1.80 lakh. Approximately 2.90 lakh families have applied for housing under this scheme, with about 1.51 lakh applying for plots and 1.38 lakh for flats.

Haryana Cabinet under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has approved "The Haryana Registration and Regulation of Travel Agents Bill, 2024 in the interests of innocent and unemployed youths from falling prey to illegal immigration rackets. Given the disturbing trend of individuals, particularly from the States of Punjab and Haryana, being deceived by corrupt travel agents engaged in fraudulent activities related to immigration, this bold initiative has been taken.
Key highlights of this bill include that no person can undertake the profession of a travel agent without obtaining a registration certificate under the Act, an application must be submitted to the competent authority with the required documents, fees, and within the specified time, the competent authority may issue a registration certificate after verifying the application details.
As per the bill the certificate is not issued unless the particulars are verified by the police, the validity of a registration certificate is for three years, renewable as per prescribed procedures. Apart from this, opening a new office or branch requires obtaining a fresh registration certificate.
It clearly mentioned in the bill that the competent authority can cancel a registration certificate for various reasons such as insolvency, criminal activities, violation of terms, etc.
Before cancellation, a show cause notice is issued, and the travel agent has an opportunity to explain. It is further mentioned that suspension may occur for a specified period pending cancellation consideration, A cancelled registration debars the travel agent from the profession for a prescribed period.
Act also mentioned that the court, while addressing offenses under this Act, determines the potential confiscation of illegally acquired property and can order confiscation as deemed appropriate, Individuals involved in human smuggling or forging documents may face imprisonment up to ten years and a fine ranging from Rs 2-5 lakhs, Violating the provisions of this Act or using prohibited devices may result in imprisonment up to seven years and a fine of two to five lakh rupees.
The Haryana Government is committed to protecting its citizens from falling victim to illegal immigration scams. The proposed legislation reflects a proactive approach to regulate travel agents, ensuring transparency, legality, and accountability in immigration-related services.
