Asian Champions Trophy: India win 4th trophy, beat Malaysia 4-3 in nailbiter

The Indians turned the match on its head in a span of a minute, pumping in two goals to level the scores 3-3

A spirited India eked out a fighting 4-3 win over Malaysia in the final to clinch the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament for the fourth time here on Saturday.
Malaysia were aggressive in the first half as the Indians found it difficult to restrict their opponent.
India converted the first PC in the ninth minute, Jugraj scoring with a fierce flick to the right of the Malaysian goalie.
The Indians got into their groove as the match progressed and played full-press hockey after the sluggish start.
But Malaysia didn't sit back and continued to test the Indian defence. Their efforts bore fruit in the 14th minute when Abu Kamal Azari found the back of the net after being fed by Azuan Hasan from the right flank.
Seconds from the first quarter, India secured back-to-back penalty corners but wasted both the chances.
Malaysia kept up their tempo in the second quarter and earned consecutive penalty corners in the 18th minute, the second of which was converted by Razie Rahim as the ball went in after getting a deflection from rusher Amit Rohidas' stick.
Malaysia secured a penalty corner for an unnecessary stick check by Jugraj in the 23rd minute but the effort went wide.
Malaysia got another penalty corner in the 28th minute and this time Muhamad Aminudin made no mistake to hand his side a 3-1 lead at half-time.
Malaysia earned another penalty corner in the 43rd minute but India defended stoutly.
The Indians turned the match on its head in a span of a minute, pumping in two goals to level the scores 3-3.
While India skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty stroke in the 45th minute, seconds later Gurjant Singh found the back of the net from field play to make the scoreline 3-3.
India secured a penalty corner six minutes from the final hooter, but Harmanpreet's flick was saved by the opposition goalkeeper.
India kept up the pressure and earned another penalty corner soon, but Harmanpreet's effort went wide.

A dominant India mauled reigning Asian champions Japan 5-0 to enter their fourth Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament final at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Friday.
While three-time champions India adopted a high-press hockey from the onset, Japan played deep into their defence to thwart the home team's attacks.
India got the first scoring chance of the match in the form of a penalty corner but Japan goalkeeper Takashi Yoshikawa made a confident save to deny home team skipper Harmanpreet Singh.
The Indians set pace of the game and enjoyed bulk of the possession, while Japan played catch-up hockey.
After a barren first quarter, India finally took the lead in the 19th minute through Akashdeep Singh, who slapped the ball in from a rebound after Hardik Singh's initial shot was saved by Japan's second goalkeeper Takumi Kitagawa.
India kept up the tempo and earned their second penalty corner in the 23rd minute and India skipper Harmanpreet sounded the board with a fierce low flick to the left of Japanese goalie to double India's lead.
Just at the stroke of half-time, India tripled their lead through Mandeep Singh.
It was Manpreet Singh who was instrumental in getting the third goal as he intercepted the ball in the midfield and then beat three Japanese defenders to set it up for Mandeep, who just had to direct the ball in.
The trend continued after the change of ends as India continued to press hard on the Japanese goal.
Sumit probably scored the goal of the tournament with a back stick flick into the net from a tight angle after being brilliantly set up by Manpreet's hardwork from the right flank.
Young Karthi Selvam made it 5-0 in India's favour in the 51st minute after being fed by an unselfish Sukhjeet Singh, who received a perfect ariel ball from Harmanpreet.
India will take on Malaysia in the final on Saturday, while Japan will be up against defending champions South Korea in the third-fourth place play-off match.

Midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad gave India the lead in the second minute of the game before Harmanpreet (20th and 30th min) scored twice from penalty corners.
Amit Rohidas (29th) and Dilpreet Singh (60th) were the other Indian goal-scorers.
William Ghislain (46th) scored the lone goal for Belgium in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

With redemption on their mind, the Indians got off to a rollicking start with a well-executed field goal in only the second minute from the start which set the momentum for the game. It was Gurjant Singh who set up the goal for Vivek with a fine assist from the left flank.
India built on this early success displayed good control of the ball, and showed the right temperament in their attacking structure.
They mounted pressure on the Belgian defence when newcomer Sanjay forced the experienced Emmanuel Stockbroekx to make an error while making space in the Belgium half. The infringement resulted in India being awarded their first penalty corner.
Though India could not convert this opportunity, they were successful from another PC in the 20th minute when Harmanpreet picked up a good injection from Abhishek before sending a powerful drag-flick to find the bottom corner of the board.
A 2-0 lead put the Indian side in good stead, allowing them to play their natural game. They dominated the ball possession and continued to puncture the Belgian defence.
In the 29th minute, Rajkumar Pal led the attack in the midfield, finding Mandeep Singh on the right flank. Not taking the shot himself, Mandeep made a surprise pass to Amit Rohidas who took a successful shot on goal and put India in a comfortable 3-0 lead.
In the following minute, India extended the lead to 4-0 when they won yet another PC. A good injection by Hardik Singh saw Amit lead the PC variation but his flick was blocked by Belgian goalkeeper. However, the rebound was picked up by Harmanpreet Singh who broke no sweat in putting the ball past Loic Van Doren.
Finding themselves on the backfoot with India taking a formidable lead at half-time, Belgium tested their opponent's defence when they were awarded back-to-back PCs at the start of the third quarter.
P R Sreejesh showcased some fine goalkeeping skills and eventually cleared the ball to safety.
In the fourth quarter, Belgium finally found a breakthrough when William Ghislan scored a fine field goal in the 46th minute.
Belgium's late comeback didn't dent India's game. Determined to finish well, India stuck to their structure and produced good attacking hockey in the dying minutes which resulted in Dilpreet Singh scoring India's fifth goal in the 60th minute to ensure their first win in the away games of FIH Hockey Pro League this season.
India play Great Britain again on Saturday.

India's chief coach Graham Reid said his players ticked most of the boxes in the 2-0 win over a tricky Spain in their opening Hockey World Cup encounter.
Reid also praised the home team's defensive efforts to deny their opponents any chances, stating he was pleased with how his players managed to keep Spain out on the night.
"The boys were able to take the ball out of the goal. It was a good start. It is good to get the first game and it is done now and we will now focus on the next game," Reid said at the post-match press conference.
"We did practice of playing with 10 men as we thought at some point in the tournament we are going to play with 10 men. It was good. We got in front a lot today and that was very important. We were first with the ball and that makes a lot of difference in these sort of games."
"What is pleasing today is one the defensive effort and the second we handle the ball very well. There were not too many people who did not play well. That is what you need to win a World Cup. We need to continue it in the next game," he added.
India will play England in their second Pool D match at the Birsa Munda Stadium on Sunday.
