Attorney General of India KK Venugopal has given his permission to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against the organiser of the Haridwar 'Dharam Sansad' and one of the main accused in the hate speech cases. 
The Attorney General found a statement made by Yati Narsinghanand to be in contempt of the Supreme Court. 
He said that Narsinghanand's comment that 'those who believe in Supreme Court and the Army will die the death of a dog' was a direct attempt to lower the authority of the top court and certainly amounts to contempt of the highest seat of judiciary in the country. 
The permission to initiate contempt proceedings was sought by lawyer activist Sachi Nelli. 
Yati Narsinghanand organised the event in Uttarakhand's Haridwar last month that called for the genocide of Muslims. He was the second person to be taken into custody. 
Video from the event were circulated on social media and drew sharp criticism from former military chiefs, retired judges, activists

After the arrest of Waseem Rizvi alias Jitendra Narayan Tyagi in connection with the three-day conclave in Haridwar where several hate speeches were made targeting Muslims, the Uttarakhand police arrested its key organiser, Yati Narsinghanand Saturday night.
Narasimhanand, the controversial priest of Dasna temple in Ghaziabad, had organised the event in Haridwar from December 17-19.
He was picked up from where he was sitting on a dharna in protest against the recent arrest of another accused in the case, Jitendra Narayan Tyagi.
Tyagi was formerly known as Waseem Rizvi and changed his name after converting to Hinduism.
Tyagi who headed the Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board before converting to Hinduism was the first person to have been arrested in connection with the case.
Both Tyagi and Narasimhanand are among those named accused in the FIRs lodged in connection with the event.The arrest of Tyagi and Narsinghanand has come after the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre, Delhi Police and the Uttarakhand government.
The notice was over a PIL alleging police inaction and seeking probe into the hate speeches at two separate events in Haridwar, organised by Narsinghanand, and another in Delhi by Hindu Yuva Vahini where speakers allegedly called for the “genocide of members” of a community.

Venkaiah Naidu on Monday expressed his strong disapproval of attempts to ridicule other religions and create dissensions in the society. He said that every person has the right to practice and preach his or her faith in the country.
"Practice your religion but don't abuse and indulge in hate speech and writings," the Vice President said at an event organised to mark the 150th death anniversary of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara in Kerala's Kottayam. Saint Kuriakose was a spiritual leader and social reformer from the Kerala Catholic community.
Observing that hate speeches and writings are against culture, heritage, traditions, constitutional rights and ethos, Naidu said secularism is in the blood of every Indian and the country is respected world-over for its culture and heritage.
In this context, the Vice President called for strengthening the Indian value system, an official statement said.
The Vice President said community service must be made compulsory for students studying in government as well as private schools as it would help them to develop an attitude of sharing and caring in their interaction with others.

The FIR was filed on December 22 after some Hindu religious leaders urged people to take up arms against Muslims calling for a genocide during a 'dharam sansad' in Haridwar from December 17-19.
