Bengaluru's Nagarathpet came to a halt as scores of BJP workers staged a protest in support of the shopowner who was allegedly attacked for playing Hanuman Chalisa during Azaan.&nbsp;

Union minister Shobha Karandlaje and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya were among the 40 BJP workers who were detained in Bengaluru after holding a protest in support of a shopkeeper who was attacked by a group of four to five people for allegedly playing Hanuman Chalisa during Azaan time.
According to the Indian Express newspaper, several pro-Hindu outfits took to the streets of Nagarathpet, affecting business at the trade hub.
While many BJP leaders claimed that the shopkeeper Mukesh was attacked for playing Hanuman Chalisa, Mukesh said in his complaint that he was assaulted for playing loud music, which caused the furore.
Meanwhile, five persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on Mukesh.
Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda told Indian Express, "Police arrested three persons &ndash; Suleman, Shahnavaz and Rohith &ndash; on Monday and two persons&ndash; Tarun and Jahid&mdash; on Tuesday. Further probe is underway.&rdquo;&nbsp;
He said that one more person is yet to be taken into custody.
Indian Express quoting a police officer from Halasuru Gate police station reported that Mukesh, in his complaint, alleged that he was playing some Hindi song loud, prompting the accused to confront him.
The heated argument began when Mukesh stated that it was his freedom to play songs in his shop, following which he was attacked, the officer said, citing the complaint.
But Mukesh then gave a different statement to the media later, alleging that he was attacked for playing Hanuman Chalisa at the time of Azaan.
The issue continued to rage in social media, with Tejasvi Surya posting on X, &ldquo;(State minister) Dinesh Gundu Rao knows more about the incident than the victim himself. There must be a limit to appeasement and hypocrisy. For once, show the spine to stand up for justice.&rdquo;
Hitting back, State Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao wrote on X: &ldquo;As usual @Tejasvi_Surya tries to spread hatred. The boys who have attacked the Hindu shopkeeper are both Hindus and Muslims. Why will Hindus attack a Hindu shopkeeper over Azaan. Who has said that Hanuman Chalisa was being played? What makes you jump to the conclusion that it was a fight over Azaan Vs Bhajan? Whatever the fight was all about, the people who acted wrongly should be punished, but it&rsquo;s shameful to see this young leader from #BJP indulging in gutter and cheap politics.&rdquo;

An Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha leader was arrested on Tuesday while allegedly going to recite Hanuman Chalisa at the Shahi Masjid Idgah on the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, officials said.
They said seven-eight other leaders of the organisation were also detained in their houses under different police stations of the city.
The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha's had given a call for reciting Hanuman Chalisa inside the Shahi Masjid Idgah to mark the anniversary of the Babri Mosque demolition.

Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Martandey Singh said the police arrested the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha's Agra region in-charge Saurabh Sharma when he was making an attempt to go towards the Idgah mosque on the complex.
He said the Mahasabha's president Rajshri Chaudhary and treasurer Dinesh Sharma were not among those confined at their homes, and that there was no information with the police about the two.
The Babri mosque in Ayodhya was demolished by 'Kar Sevaks' on December 6, 1992.
The ASP said security has been beefed up in view of the right wing organisation's declaration of reciting Hanuman Chalisa at the Idgah on Tuesday.
District Magistrate Pulkit Khare had taken stock of security arrangement in the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Idgah complex Monday night.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shailesh Kumar Pandey said that law and order situation would not be allowed to be disturbed. A strict watch is also being kept on social media too, he said.
The SSP had said on Monday that no new tradition or ritual would be allowed to be performed.
The orders of the Supreme Court would be followed and the implementation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in letter and spirit would be ensured, he said.
The organisation had given a similar call last year but their plan was scuttled by the district administration.

In a statement, the Vishva Hindu Parishad alleged violent demonstrations were held and stones pelted at temples and houses after prayers in mosques on June 10 as part of a well-planned conspiracy to defame India globally.
Protests erupted in several parts of the country, including outside Delhi's Jama Masjid, on June 10 against the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by now-sacked BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.
In Jharkhand, some policemen were injured while trying to control demonstrators, while authorities in Jammu imposed a curfew in a few areas. In parts of Uttar Pradesh, protesters pelted the police with stones prompting the latter to baton charge them and use tear gas shells.
"Illegal fatwas were issued for the killing of Nupur Sharma... The Hindu society rejects and strongly condemns the pressure that was built on the Hindu society due to such illegal demonstrations," Delhi VHP chief Kapil Khanna said in the statement.
"To protest against this, I call upon the Hindu society of Delhi to assemble at small and big temples in the city and participate in mass recitation of Hanuman Chalisa at 8.00 pm tomorrow (June 14, 2022)," he added.
Khanna also urged managers and priests of temples to put up notices informing devotees about the mass recitation of Hanuman Chalisa.
"It is absolutely necessary to showcase our strength in such a manner and constitutionally respond to the unethical pressure being built on the Hindu society," he said.
"To get rid of such kind of jihad, we must gather in our temples at least once a week," he said.

A campaign to rename sites linked to Delhi's Muslim rule past is gathering steam. May 10 saw multiple such attempts, involving major political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party, and lesser-known groups like the Mahakal Manav Seva.
Qutub Minar, the 12th century monument in Delhi was targeted by the Mahakal Manav Seva. The Hindu group organised a Hanuman Chalisa recitation near Qutub Minar to demand that the monument be renamed as Vishnu Stambh. They were detained by police later.
Recently, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had said that 27 Hindu temples were demolished to build the Qutub Minar and the mosque on the premises. Therefore, temples should be built again in the area, and Hindus should be granted permission to pray there, the VHP had demanded.
Meanwhile, the chief of BJP's Delhi unit demanded that roads in the national capital named after Mughal figures should be rechristened. Adesh Gupta said that the names of these streets were a sign of slavery.
The BJP leader said that Tughlaq Road should be renamed Guru Gobind Singh Marg, Akbar Road should be Maharana Pratap Road, Humayun Road should be Maharishi Valmiki Road, and Shahjahan Road should be General Bipin Singh Rawat Road.
The BJP leader made this appeal in a letter to the New Delhi Municipal Council.

The couple, who were arrested by Mumbai Police on Saturday, have been sent to jail for 14 days after a Mumbai court rejected the police's demand for their custody. 
Badnera MLA Ravi Rana and his wife Navneet Rana, the MP from Amravati in Maharashtra, were arrested for allegedly "creating enmity between different groups". 
They have also been booked for allegedly using 'criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty'
The development came hours after the couple cancelled their plan to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's private residence. 
The couple had challenged the chief minister to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside his residence failing which they would themselves go and recite it outside Uddhav Thackeray's residence.

Somaiya reached the Khar police station late evening in support of Amravati MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana who were arrested earlier in the day on the charge of creating enmity between different groups".
The BJP leader enjoys a categorised security cover provided by the Centre.
Shiv Sena supporters, who had gathered outside the police station, protested against Somaiya's visit and shouted slogans.
While he was leaving the police station in the SUV, a group of protesters hurled footwear and water bottles at his vehicle.
Somaiya then travelled to the Bandra police station to file a complaint against Sena supporters.
Speaking to reporters, Somaiya said police officials present at the spot should be suspended and Shiv Sena supporters booked on the charge of the attempt to murder.
The BJP leader also said he would not step out of his SUV unless the Mumbai police commissioner visits the spot.
On the other hand, Sena supporters claimed that Somaiya's driver tried to knock them down after leaving the Khar police station.
Former Mumbai mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, who was protesting outside the police station along with Sena workers, said that Somaiya's visit shows that the Rana couple enjoys the support of the BJP.
"They are trying to disrupt the law and order situation in the city and Maharashtra," he alleged.

Tension started building up between Shiv Sena workers and the Rana couple after the latter declared that they will travel to Mumbai on Saturday morning to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside Uddhav Thackeray's private residence 'Matoshree' in Bandra.
Sena workers, including a large number of women, virtually laid a siege to the Rana couple's residence in the Khar area demanding an apology from them.
The Ranas later withdrew their plan to recite Hanuman Chalisa, saying that they don't want any law and order issues ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit for a function in Mumbai on Sunday.

Dramatic scenes occurred as politician couple Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana were arrested by Maharashtra police on April 23. They were seen shouting towards the cameras as the police tried to take them away.

Shiv Sena workers on Saturday morning broke through the barricades and tried to enter the premises of the Khar residence of Maharashtra MLA Ravi Rana and his wife MP Navneet Rana, who had earlier announced to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's house, police said.
But the situation was brought under control, an official said, adding that the police later asked the politician couple not to step out of their house as the situation may escalate due to the presence of a large number of Shiv Sena workers outside their building in suburban Khar.
The Ranas had on Friday said that they were firm on their plan to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside 'Matoshree', the personal residence of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray in suburban Bandra at 9 am on Saturday.
Strongly objecting to their plan, Shiv Sena workers, including women, have been camping outside 'Matoshree' since Friday morning, with many of them staying put there overnight. Taking an aggressive stand, the party leaders and workers have said they will not let the couple go back without 'prasad' "if they dared to turn up".
"Around 8.45 am, angry Shiv Sena supporters broke through the barricades, placed at a distance of around 50 metres from the building, where the Ranas own a flat in Khar. They tried to enter the apartment premises. The party workers raised slogans in support of CM Thackeray and dared the couple to step out of the residence," the police official said.
However, the police personnel deployed at the spot brought the situation under control and dissuaded the party workers from indulging in anything that would create a law and order problem, he said.
"Around 10.15 am, senior police officers visited the residence of Ranas and told them that they should not step out of their home as a large number of Shiv Sena workers were gathered outside their apartment, which may lead to a law and order problem," the official said.
Navneet Rana is an independent MP from Amravati Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra, while her husband Ravi Rana is an independent MLA from Badnera Assembly constituency in Amravati district. Navneet Rana has been provided Y category security by the central government.
On Friday, Mumbai police had served a notice to the couple, asking them not to disturb the law and order situation in the city.
Ravi Rana had earlier told reporters here that he had demanded the chief minister read Hanuman Chalisa on Hanuman Jayanti "to rid Maharashtra of crises and attain peace for the state," but Thackeray had "refused" to do so.
The city police have stepped up security outside 'Matoshree'. Barricades have been placed on the road leading to the Thackeray residence to avoid crowding, the official said.
"In order to maintain law and order situation, the police have increased security and deployed large number of personnel outside 'Matoshree'," the official said.
Early this morning, senior police officers, including zonal DCP Manjunath Singe, visited the place and took stock of security deployment, he said.
Besides 'Matoshree', the police have also increased security at 'Varsha', the official residence of CM Thackeray in south Mumbai.
A Shiv Sena supporter camping outside 'Matoshree' said, "We have accepted the challenge of the Rana couple. Let them come, we are ready to welcome them and give them 'prasad'." Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai said, "'Matoshree' is a temple for Shiv Sainiks. Hindutva is in Shiv Sena's blood, nobody should teach us Hindutva.
