The killings in the capital Port-au-Prince were overseen by a powerful gang leader convinced that his son's illness was caused by followers of the religion, according to civil organization the Committee for Peace and Development (CPD).
It was the latest act of extreme violence by powerful gangs that control most of the capital city in the impoverished Caribbean country mired for decades in political instability, natural disasters and other woes.
"He decided to cruelly punish all elderly people and voodoo practitioners who, in his imagination, would be capable of sending a bad spell on his son," a statement from the Haiti-based group said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the "horrific" violence, which his spokesman said left at least 184 people, including 127 elderly men and women, dead.
Calling the bloody episode an "act of barbarity, of unbearable cruelty," the office of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime said "this monstrous crime constitutes a direct attack on humanity."
Both the CPD and UN said that the killings took place in the capital's western coastal neighborhood of Cite Soleil.
Reached by telephone by AFP, a resident confirmed the attacks and said that his 76-year-old father was among the victims.
"The bandits set fire to his body. The family cannot even organize a burial for him since we were unable to recover the body," he told AFP on condition of anonymity so as not to compromise the safety of other relatives.
"I also fear for their lives," he said. "I will try to get them out."

- Taken to be 'executed' - &nbsp; "The gang's soldiers were responsible for identifying victims in their homes to take them to the chief's stronghold to be executed," the CPD said.
"Reliable sources within the community report that more than a hundred people were massacred, their bodies mutilated and burned in the street," it said.
One of the organization's leaders, Fritznel Pierre, told Radio Magik 9 in an interview that the number of casualties was not exhaustive, as the area was difficult to access.
He reported that henchmen had hunted down old people and voodoo followers living in the Wharf Jeremie section of Cite Soleil between Friday evening and Saturday.
"Motorcycle taxi drivers who tried to flee with targeted people were also executed," he said.
Voodoo was brought to Haiti by African slaves and is a mainstay of the country's culture. It was banned during French colonial rule and only recognized as an official religion by the Haitian government in 2003.
While it incorporates elements of other religious beliefs, including Catholicism, voodoo has been historically attacked by other religions.
Haiti has suffered from decades of instability but the situation escalated in February when armed groups launched coordinated attacks in the capital to overthrow then-prime minister Ariel Henry.
Gangs now control 80 percent of the city. Despite a Kenyan-led police support mission, backed by the United States and UN, violence has continued to soar.
The UN chief called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the weekend massacre and also reiterated calls for more international support to assist Haitian police in their battle against the gangs.
More than 700,000 people are internally displaced in Haiti, half of them children; added to this are 5,000 forced from their homes by the weekend massacre, said the International Organization for Migration.
The latest killings bring the death toll this year in Haiti to around 5,000 people, according to the United Nations.

The neighbourhoods had remained largely peaceful despite a surge in violent gang attacks across Port-au-Prince that began on February 29.
An Associated Press photographer saw the bodies of at least 12 men strewn on the streets of P&eacute;tionville, located just below the mountainous communities of Laboule and Thomassin.
Crowds began gathering around the victims. One was lying face up on the street surrounded by a scattered deck of cards and another found face down inside a pick-up truck known as a "tap-tap" that operates as a taxi. A woman at one of the scenes collapsed and had to be held by others after learning that a relative of hers was killed.
"Abuse! This is abuse!" cried out one Haitian man who did not want to be identified as he raised his arms and stood near one of the victims. "People of Haiti! Wake up!" An ambulance arrived shortly afterward and made its way through P&eacute;tionville, collecting the victims.
"We woke up this morning to find bodies in the street in our community of P&eacute;tionville," said Douce Titi, who works at the mayor's office. "Ours is not that kind of community. We will start working to remove those bodies before the children start walking by to go to school and the vendors start to arrive." It was too late for some, though. A relative of one of the victims hugged a young boy close to his chest, with his head turned away from the scene.
The most recent attacks raised concerns that gang violence would not cease despite Prime Minister Ariel Henry announcing nearly a week ago that he would resign once a transitional presidential council is created, a move that gangs had been demanding.
Gangs have long opposed Henry, saying he was never elected by the people as they blame him for deepening poverty, but critics of gangs accuse them of trying to seize power for themselves or for unidentified Haitian politicians.
Also on Monday, Haiti's power company announced that four substations in the capital and elsewhere "were destroyed and rendered completely dysfunctional". As a result, swaths of Port-au-Prince were without power, including the Cite Soleil slum, the Croix-des-Bouquets community and a hospital.
The company said criminals also seized important documents, cables, inverters, batteries and other items.
As gang violence continues unabated, Caribbean leaders have been helping with the creation of a transitional council. It was originally supposed to have seven members with voting powers. But one political party in Haiti rejected the seat they were offered, and another is still squabbling over who should be nominated.
Meanwhile, the deployment of a UN-backed Kenyan police force to fight gangs in Haiti has been delayed, with the East African country saying it would wait until the transitional council is established.
In a bid to curb the relentless violence, Haiti's government announced Sunday that it was extending a nighttime curfew through March 20.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has agreed to resign and make way for a transitional authority, the president of Guyana and a US official said Monday after a regional meeting on a gang uprising that has plunged Haiti into violent chaos.
Henry, an unelected leader who took power right before Haiti's president was assassinated in 2021, was under acute pressure from parties including the United States to yield to some kind of new power arrangement as the already poor and unstable country fell further into bedlam.
It has no president or parliament now and has not held an election since 2016. Gangs who control much of the country went on a rampage last week, demanding Henry's resignation as they attacked the capital Port au Prince's airport, the presidential palace and other key structures.
"We are pleased to announce a commitment to a transitional governance arrangement which paves the way for a peaceful transition of power," said Irfaan Ali, president of Guyana, which now chairs the regional body called CARICOM.
"To that end, we acknowledge the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry," Ali told a news conference.
A US official also said Henry had confirmed his resignation in a telephone conversation with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was in Jamaica for the emergency meeting.
CARICOM called the crisis meeting in Jamaica after armed gangs that already control much of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince unleashed a campaign of violence, with the Western hemisphere's poorest nation plunging into an orgy of killing and looting and fears rising of famine.
Port-au-Prince and the surrounding region is under a month-long state of emergency, while a nighttime curfew has been extended through Thursday -- although it is unlikely overstretched police can enforce it.
CARICOM leaders consulted virtually with Henry and other Haitians throughout the meeting.
Blinken promised another $100 million to back an international stabilization force, bringing the total promised by the United States to $300 million since the crisis intensified several years ago.
Blinken also offered another $33 million in immediate humanitarian assistance.
President Joe Biden -- who ended the US war in Afghanistan -- has ruled out sending troops to Haiti, which the United States occupied for nearly two decades a century ago and where it has intervened since.
Eyes initially turned to Canada, but it also decided a Haiti mission was too dangerous with success uncertain.
Canada, however, has offered $91 million for Haiti, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised continued support as he addressed the Kingston summit remotely.
Kenya stepped forward but was set back by a domestic court ruling against the deployment to Haiti.
The Kenyan deployment plan has again picked up steam after Henry visited Nairobi and agreed on a "reciprocal" exchange of forces between the two countries.
Henry was blocked from returning to Haiti by the intensifying violence. He is stranded in the US territory of Puerto Rico, with no outside power interested in helping him return.
The US official said Henry was welcome to remain in Puerto Rico.

A powerful Haitian gang leader warned Tuesday that the chaos engulfing the capital Port-au-Prince will lead to civil war and "genocide" unless Prime Minister Ariel Henry steps down.
The stark comments from Jimmy Cherizier, known as "Barbecue," came as Henry appeared to be struggling to fly home, with the main airport under attack and neighboring Dominican Republic refusing permission for him to land.
Henry, who was supposed to step down last month, was out of the country last week when armed criminal gangs, who control large swathes of the country, launched a coordinated assault to oust him.
"If Ariel Henry doesn't resign, if the international community continues to support him, we'll be heading straight for a civil war that will lead to genocide," Cherizier, a former police officer who is under UN sanctions for human rights abuses, told reporters in the capital.
"Either Haiti becomes a paradise or a hell for all of us. It's out of the question for a small group of rich people living in big hotels to decide the fate of people living in working-class neighborhoods," the 46-year-old added.
As the latest crisis in the violence-wracked Caribbean nation spiraled, gunfire shut down some flights at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti's capital.
Henry was denied entry into the neighboring Dominican Republic, according to Dominican news group CDN.
On Tuesday evening, a spokesperson for the governor's office in nearby Puerto Rico confirmed his plane had landed there, at least briefly. "I don't know if he's still in Puerto Rico," Sheila Anglero told AFP by telephone.
In power since the 2021 assassination of president Jovenel Moise, Henry was due to step down in February but instead agreed to a power-sharing deal with the opposition until new elections are held.
Earlier Tuesday, a police academy in the capital where more than 800 cadets are training came under attack by an armed gang.
The attack was repelled after the arrival of reinforcements, said Lionel Lazarre of the Haitian police union.
The unrest has left 250 Cubans stranded in Port-au-Prince after their flights were canceled, according to the Havana office of Sunrise Airways.
"When we were about to board the plane, they realized that the plane had a bullet hole," a 34-year-old Cuban passenger told AFP via WhatsApp, on condition of anonymity.
Cherizier, who leads a group of gangs known as the "G9 Family and Allies," cites as a chief inspiration Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier, who ruled Haiti with ruthless brutality in the 1960s and 70s.
He said gunmen had committed harmful acts, but "I believe that society must forgive them and unite to rethink a new Haiti."

Haitian officials have been pleading for months for international assistance to help their overwhelmed security forces, as gangs push beyond the city and into rural areas.
Henry had traveled to Kenya to push for the deployment of a UN-backed multinational police mission to help stabilize his country when the attempt to oust him began.
With him away, the gangs raided two Port-au-Prince prisons, in attacks that resulted in a dozen deaths and the escape of thousands of inmates.
"They're showing us that the police don't matter," Bertony Junior Exantus, a resident of Delmas in Port-au-Prince who fled the violence, told reporters.
At least 15,000 people have recently evacuated the worst-hit parts of the capital, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Due to limited movement, UN teams on the ground have been unable to report a death toll, Dujarric told reporters in New York.
The government has declared a state of emergency and nighttime curfew, while the UN Security Council has scheduled a closed-door meeting Wednesday.
After being brought to a virtual standstill, Port-au-Prince appeared quieter Tuesday, although some streets remained barricaded by residents.
Some transport resumed and shops reopened, with long queues outside of stores, banks and at petrol stations.
In Washington, the State Department renewed a call for calm, though a spokesman declined to address the whereabouts of Haiti's prime minister.

The 72-hour state of emergency went into immediate effect as the government said it would set out to find the killers, kidnappers and other violent criminals that it reported escaped from the prison.
&ldquo;The police were ordered to use all legal means at their disposal to enforce the curfew and apprehend all offenders,&rdquo; said a statement from Finance Minister Patrick Boivert, who is serving as acting prime minister.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry travelled abroad last week to try to salvage support for a bringing in a United Nations-backed security force to stabilise the country in its conflict with increasingly powerful crime groups.
The decree capped a deadly weekend that marked a new low in Haiti's downward spiral of violence. At least nine people had been killed since Thursday &mdash; four of them police officers &mdash; as gangs stepped up coordinated attacks on state institutions in Port-au-Prince. Targets included police stations, the country's international airport, even the national soccer stadium.
But the siege on Saturday night of the National Penitentiary came as a shock even to Haitians accustomed to living under the constant threat of violence. Almost all of the estimated 4,000 inmates fled during the jailbreak, leaving the normally overcrowded facility eerily empty Sunday with no guards in sight and plastic sandals, clothing and furniture strewn across the concrete patio. Three bodies with gunshot wounds lay at the prison entrance.
In another neighbourhood, the bloodied corpses of two men with their hands tied behind the backs lay face down as residents walked past roadblocks set up with burning tires.
Among the few dozen that chose to stay in the prison are 18 former Colombian soldiers accused of working as mercenaries in the July 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Mo&iuml;se. Amid the clashes Saturday night, several of the Colombians shared a video pleading for their lives.
&ldquo;Please, please help us,&rdquo; one of the men, Francisco Uribe, said in the message widely shared on social media. "They are massacring people indiscriminately inside the cells.&rdquo; On Sunday, Uribe told journalists who walked breezily into the normally highly guarded facility, &ldquo;I didn't flee because I'm innocent." Colombia's foreign ministry called on Haiti to provide &ldquo;special protection&rdquo; for the men.
In the absence of official information, inmates' family members rushed to the prison to check on loved ones.
&ldquo;I don't know whether my son is alive or not,&rdquo; said Alexandre Jean as she roamed around the cells looking for any sign of him. &ldquo;I don't know what to do.&rdquo; The violence Saturday night appeared to be widespread, with several neighbourhoods reporting gunfire.
A second Port-au-Prince prison containing around 1,400 inmates was also overrun. Gang gunmen also occupied and vandalised the nation's top soccer stadium, taking one employee hostage for hours, Haiti's soccer federation said in a statement.
Internet service for many residents was down as Haiti's top mobile network said a fibre optic cable connection was slashed during the rampage.
In the space of less than two weeks, several state institutions have been attacked by the gangs, which are increasingly coordinating their actions and choosing once unthinkable targets like the Central Bank. As part of coordinated attacks by gangs, four police officers were killed Thursday.
After gangs opened fire at Haiti's international airport last week, the US Embassy said it was halting all official travel to the country and on Sunday night urged all American citizens to depart as soon as possible. The embassy said it would also cancel until Thursday all consular appointments.
The Biden administration, which has steadfastly refused to commit troops to any multinational force while offering instead money and logistical support, said it was monitoring the rapidly deteriorating security situation with grave concern.
A National Security Council official said violence serves only to delay a democratic transition while destroying the lives of thousands. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reiterated US support for elections, inclusive governance and the restoration of democracy.
The epicentre of the latest violence Saturday night was Haiti's National Penitentiary, which was holding several gang leaders. Amid the exchange of gunfire, police appealed for assistance.
&ldquo;They need help,&rdquo; a union representing police said in a message on social media bearing an &ldquo;SOS&rdquo; emoji repeated eight times. &ldquo;Let's mobilize the army and the police to prevent the bandits from breaking into the prison.&rdquo; The clashes follow violent protests that turned deadlier in recent days as the prime minister went to Kenya seeking to move ahead on a proposed UN-backed security mission in Haiti to be led by that East African country.
Henry took over as prime minister following Moise's assassination and has repeatedly postponed plans to hold parliamentary and presidential elections, which haven't happened in almost a decade.
Haiti's National Police has roughly 9,000 officers to provide security for more than 11 million people, according to the UN. They are routinely overwhelmed and outgunned by gangs, which are estimated to control up to 80 per cent of Port-au-Prince.
Jimmy Ch&eacute;rizier, a former elite police officer known as Barbecue who now runs a gang federation, has claimed responsibility for the surge in attacks. He said the goal was to capture Haiti's police chief and government ministers and prevent Henry's return.

Some adults are sleeping on the ground without mattresses.
Young people chatted and joked in the schoolyard Saturday, while others played soccer and basketball or jumped rope.
Seriphin said many of the children sheltering at the school came without their parents.
Some youngsters stood in line waiting to give information about fathers and mothers, some who are missing and others who the gangs prevented from leaving Cite Soleil.
"We need a lot of help," said Jean Michelet, a 16-year-old who said he was wounded on the day that the gang battles erupted in early July.
"I was home on the day the war started. It was a lot of shooting. A bullet went through the roof and it hit me in the head," he said.
He said a nun took him to a hospital to have the injury treated.
Michelet said a lot of people had been killed during the gunbattles. "The situation is really bad," he said.
A year after the unsolved assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, gang violence has grown worse in Haiti and many people have tried to flee a country that seems to be in economic and social freefall.

Haiti's President&nbsp;Jovenel Mo&iuml;se&nbsp;was assassinated&nbsp;on Wednesday at his private residence. His wife&nbsp;Martine Mo&iuml;se was also shot in the overnight attack and is currently hospitalised. It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the assassination, according to the country's interim prime minister.&nbsp; The country appeared to be heading for fresh uncertainty ahead of planned general elections later this year. Moise, 53, had been ruling by decree for more than a year after the country failed to hold elections and the opposition demanded he step down in recent months.
The assassination drew shock and condemnation from leaders in Latin America, Europe and elsewhere on Wednesday, along with calls for calm and unity in the troubled Caribbean nation.
