A man carrying a gun in a holster approached Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during a campaign rally in Karnataka and garlanded the Congress leaders standing next to him. This was caught on camera and the video of it is doing rounds on the internet.&nbsp;
As the man climbed down from the vehicle, Siddaramaiah and the others noticed the weapon. The man was identified as Riyaz.&nbsp;
Police said that Riyaz had been carrying the gun since surviving a violent assault several years ago, and he had been granted an exemption from surrendering his weapon.
A senior police official said, "The incident occurred close to Wilson Garden. As for the weapon, it is licensed, carried by Riyaz for self-defence after previous attacks. An inquiry is ongoing."
After the video of the incident went viral, Vijayendra Yediyurappa - the son of former chief minister and BJP leader BS Yediyurappa, said on X, "While the election code of conduct is in force, a man with a gun garlanded the Chief Minister and Congress candidates during the roadshow of the party is an alarming development. It is a mystery why the police, who take possession of weapons from those who obtain gun licenses for self-defense and keep them with them till the end of the election process, did not seize the gun from this person. Who is this person?&nbsp;
He further said, "His background needs to be investigated. The incident shows the Congress is going to hold elections with such people... Ever since the Congress came to power, the mischief of vandals has been recurring. The Election Commission has to take serious action on this incident today. Along with this, it should keep an eagle eye on the activities of anti-social forces and take all precautionary measures for peaceful polling."

Many legislators belonging to the Republican party oppose stricter laws, claiming that it would be a violation of the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, which states that "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed".

After the latest tragedy, Senator Ted Cruz said, "You see politicians trying to politicise it. You see Democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the Constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. That doesn't work. It's not effective. It doesn't prevent crime. We know what does prevent crime, which is going after felons and fugitives, and those with serious mental illness."
A few gun control legislations are currently being considered in the US Congress.
One of the bills, called the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021, has been passed by the House of Representatives. It was placed on the Senate's legislative calendar after the Texas incident. It aims to close the "Charleston loophole" which allows some licensed gun sales to conclude without a background check.
Another bill, called the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, has also been passed by the House. The bill aims to expand background checks for all firearm sales or transfers. It has support from many legislators belonging to both Republican and Democratic camps.
But this is not enough to get it passed. When gun control laws reach the US Senate, they are come under threat from the filibuster.
The filibuster is a rule in the Senate which allows any member to block voting on a bill, simply by not letting the debate on it end. This can involve hours of non-stop speaking, sometimes through the night, to force the other side to withdraw or delay a decision on the bill. To overcome a filibuster and initiate voting, Senators pushing gun control laws would need 60 votes. And this means getting sizeable Republican support, which appears next to impossible.
So, why are Republicans against stricter gun laws, even if it means tragedies like the Texas one? One of the reasons, as President Biden suggested, could be gun lobbies, which do not want firearm sales to go down because of strict laws.
A more fundamental reason could be voter preferences. In a 2020 survey by Pew, 46% people said that the Republican party reflected their views on gun policy, while 42% said that the Democratic party reflected it better. In a 2021 survey by Gallup, 50% people were either satisfied with existing gun laws, or wanted looser laws. 41% were dissatisfied and wanted stricter gun laws.

Two people were injured in west Delhi's Subhash Nagar last evening after at least three shooters surrounded a car on a busy road and fired 10 rounds at the occupants.
Chilling CCTV footage shows passers-by looking on dumbfounded as the car is fired at and then chased by the attackers, firearms in their hands.
While detailed information about the incident is yet to come in, the footage points to a planned attack.
The 1-minute video shared by news agency ANI shows the busy Subhash Nagar neighbourhood during peak traffic hours. A white car is seen stuck in the middle of the road as two shooters point their guns at the occupants.
Shocked by the sight of the attackers wielding guns, passers-by, bikers and e-rickshaw operators are seen fleeing to safety. Traffic comes to a standstill as cars stop far behind the white car being fired at. Some cars are also seen making an about turn and leaving the area.
Three shooters keep firing at the car until the vehicle lunges forward and moves out of the camera frame. The shooters chase it, gun in hand. Possibly due to an obstruction ahead, the car then reverses back to its earlier spot, takes a quick turn and speeds away. The shooters are seen trying to chase it down as others on the road look on in shock.
Visuals shot later show that heavy police force has now been deployed at the crime spot. The car is now in police's custody.
