It&rsquo;s counting day for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. While the big battle is for government formation there are several smaller ones also playing out.

Congress more or less was missing throughout the campaigning with its focus on more on Rahul Gandhi&rsquo;s &lsquo;Bharat Jodo Yatra&rsquo;.
Going by Himachal Pradesh&rsquo;s almost 40-year-old trend of voting out the incumbent government, it is Congress&rsquo; turns to take the reigns of the hill state this time but BJP by now has made a habit of bucking such trends by getting re-elected in &nbsp;Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Assam, and Uttarakhand

Gujarat Elections 2022: 59.2% voter turnout as polling for first phase ends

An average 59.24 per cent voter turn-out was recorded across 89 Assembly seats in the first phase of Gujarat elections, election officials said. 

Barring a few incidents, polling was largely peaceful across all 89 seats in south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions which went to polls in the first phase.

An average 59.24 per cent voter turn-out was recorded as of 5 pm on Thursday across 89 Assembly seats in the first phase of Gujarat elections, election officials said.
While voting began at 8 in the morning and ended at 5 pm, the final turn-out would be higher as the process continued at the polling stations where voters had arrived before 5 pm and were standing in queues.
The fate of 788 candidates will be decided in the first phase.
Barring a few incidents, polling was largely peaceful across all 89 seats in south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions which went to polls in the first phase.
The voter turn-out figure was provisional as data from some polling stations had not been received and it also did not include postal ballots, the Election Commission said.
Voting was halted in a few places due to malfunctioning of Electronic Voting Machines as well as control units and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) but the faulty units were replaced and the process resumed, it added.

The BJP's minority cell has launched a drive to connect with Muslims in poll-bound Gujarat by making at least 100 "Alpsankhyak Mitra" which roughly translates to 'in assembly segments having a sizeable population of the community.

The BJP's minority cell has launched a drive to connect with Muslims in poll-bound Gujarat by making at least 100 "Alpsankhyak Mitra" which roughly translates to '(friend from the minority community) in assembly segments having a sizeable population of the community, party leader Jamal Siddiqui said on Sunday. 

Each such "Alpsankhyak Mitra" of the party would be given the responsibility to ensure 50 minority votes for the BJP from their surroundings.&nbsp;

The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) minority cell has launched a drive to connect with Muslims in Gujarat, which goes to polls later this year, by making at least 100 "Alpsankhyak Mitra" in assembly segments having a sizeable population of the community, party leader Jamal Siddiqui said on Sunday.
People belonging to minority communities, mainly Muslims, will also be included in the BJP's booth committees in such assembly segments, the party's minority cell chief told PTI. "The BJP's minority cell has started a drive to connect at least 100 Muslims hailing from non-political background with the party as its sympathisers. They could be spiritual leaders, professionals, or entrepreneurs," Siddiqui said.
Each such "Alpsankhyak Mitra (friend from the minority community)" of the party would be given the responsibility to ensure 50 minority votes for the BJP from their surroundings, he said.
He further said members of the minority cell will be included in the BJP's booth committees in 109 assembly segments that have substantial Muslim population -- from 25,000 to one lakh votes.
The BJP's outreach comes at a time its state government in Gujarat is under attack for releasing 11 men convicted for raping a Muslim woman, Bilkis Bano, and killing her family members during the 2002 communal riots.

Asked about this, Siddiqui defended his party's government saying it had formed a committee "following the instructions of the High Court and that committee decided to release the convicts." "It was only the BJP government which punished them and they have been released after serving a certain punishment...after all, mercy is part of Indian culture," Siddqui said.
When asked about 2002 riots, Siddiqui said it was an unfortunate incident and people have no move forward.
"Riots happened in 2002, it was unfortunate. It is past now, people have moved on. People have seen that Prime Minister Narendra Modi doesn't differentiate on basis of caste and religion. People irrespective of their faith have benefited from welfare schemes of his government," he said.
As per the 2011 census, Muslims are the biggest minority in Gujarat, constituting 9.65 per cent of the population. But it could send only three MLAs, all belonging to the Congress, to the assembly in the 2017 elections.
The Congress had fielded five candidates, while the BJP didn't give ticket to any Muslim candidate in the last assembly election.&nbsp;

When the battle over Opposition's 2024 PM candidate has already ensued with JDU leader Nitish Kumar setting the benchmark , AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal said he was not eyeing any post during his ongoing tour to Gujarat ahead of the state elections. 
NDTV reported that Kejriwal made the remarks responding to a question on whether he wanted to be PM.  He said he was not focusing on any posts, just wanted to make India a 'Number-1 country.'
Kejriwal is on a two-day visit to Gujarat that awaits elections later this year. His visit comes amid a row over alleged irregularities in Delhi's excise policy and the Central Bureau of Investigation registering an FIR against Sisodia.
The Delhi CM also defended his deputy on the recent CBI-ED raids calling them attempts to topple his government, while asserting that "Operation Lotus" proved to be a failure in the national capital.
Earlier in the day, Sisodia claimed that he was approached by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with an offer that all cases against him will be closed if he joined the saffron party.
