Six schoolgirls jumped off a speeding pick-up van after the driver and other occupants tried to molest them in Gujarat's Chhotaudepur district.

Six minor schoolgirls in the age group of 15-17 years jumped off a speeding pick-up truck after the vehicle's driver and five other occupants allegedly tried to molest them in Gujarat's Chhotaudepur district, police said on Wednesday.
The truck went off the road and overturned as the driver, Suresh Bhil, lost control over the wheels when the girls started jumping off in a frantic attempt to save themselves from molesters on Tuesday evening, said district superintendent of police (SP) Imtiyaz Shaikh.
One of the accused, the vehicle owner, has been arrested, while the girls received minor injuries in the incident, he said, adding the truck occupants also snatched cash and belongings of the victims.
Following the incident, which took place on an internal road in Sankheda taluka of the district, police have lodged an FIR under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) and also on charges of robbery and molestation under the IPC against six persons, including the driver, Shaikh said.
One of the accused men, identified as Ashwin Bhil, was arrested from the spot after the accident, while five others were yet to be nabbed, stated the police officer.
The five other accused were identified as Suresh Bhil (driver), Arjun Bhil, Paresh Bhil, Sunil Bhil and Shailesh Bhil, said the SP.
According to Shaikh, the girls are residents of a village in Sankheda taluka and study in a school situated nearly 5 kilometres away from their home.
"On Tuesday evening, they sat in a pick-up truck to reach home after finishing their school. On the way, driver Suresh and other men, who were already in the vehicle, started harassing the girls and tried to molest them. The men even snatched their belongings and cash. To save themselves, these girls jumped off the speeding vehicle," said Shaikh.
"The vehicle then turned turtle after the driver lost control over it. The accused took advantage of the situation and fled the spot. However, one Ashwin Bhil, who owns the vehicle, was nabbed from the spot in an injured state. The girls, who received minor injuries, were referred to a nearby hospital for treatment. They all are out of danger," said the SP.
Based on a complaint by one of the victims, a 17-year-old girl who was the eldest among them, the police lodged an FIR on Tuesday, he added.

In a joint operation launched with the Gujarat Anti Terrorist Squad, Coast Guards seized ammunition and 40kg of drugs worth Rs 300 crore.
The boat is being brought to Okha in Gujarat for further investigation.&nbsp;

 The Gujarat Anti Terrorist Squad in a joint operation with the Indian Coast Guard seized 40 kg heroin worth Rs 200 crore from a Pakistani fishing boat in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast on Wednesday, a senior ATS official said.
Six Pakistani crew members of the boat were also apprehended, he said.
The fishing boat carrying drugs was intercepted mid-sea by a joint team of the Coast Guard and ATS near Jakhau harbour in Kutch district, the official said.
“The heroin was meant to be transported to Punjab by road after being offloaded on the Gujarat coast. Based on a specific tip- off, we intercepted the boat which left from Pakistan, and caught six Pakistani nationals with 40 kg of heroin,” he said.
The ATS and Coast Guard officials along with the seized boat are expected to reach the Jakhau coast later in the day, he said.
The state ATS and the Coast Guard had foiled similar attempts of drug smuggling in the past also and caught foreign nationals with huge quantities of narcotics which they planned to smuggle into India via the Gujarat coast.

At least ten persons died and 20 others were admitted to different hospitals after consuming spurious liquor in Botad district of Gujarat, officials said on Monday night.
Some of the patients are in critical condition, they said.
Police have detained a few persons and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Ahmedabad crime branch have also joined the investigation.
While two persons died in the morning, another five lost their lives while undergoing treatment during the day, Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Bhatia had said. Three more persons died later during treatment, officials said on Monday late at night.
"As per our information, five persons from the Botad district and five from two villages of nearby Dhandhuka taluka of the Ahmedabad district have died so far. At least 20 persons are still under treatment at different hospitals, mostly at Sir Takhtsinhji hospital in Bhavnagar. Some of them are critical," Botad Superintendent of Police Karanraj Vaghela told reporters on Monday late at night.
He said a case of accidental death has been registered and some persons were detained for questioning.
"Police will add the charge of murder if required. Gujarat ATS as well as the Ahmedabad crime branch have also joined our probe to nab the culprits," said Vaghela.
Bhatia had said the police detained three persons from the Botad district who were allegedly involved in manufacturing and selling spurious country-made liquor.
Most of the deceased are labourers.
The matter came to light after some residents of Rojid village in Barvala taluka of Botad district and some other surrounding villages were referred to government hospitals in Barvala and Botad towns after their health started deteriorating early Monday morning.
Earlier in the day, the wife of a victim undergoing treatment had told reporters that her husband's condition started deteriorating hours after he consumed hooch at Rojid village on Sunday night.
One Himmatbhai, who is recovering, claimed at least 15 people fell ill after consuming the hooch they had purchased from a bootlegger on Sunday night.
Inspector General of Police (Bhavnagar range), Ashok Kumar Yadav, visited the Botad civil hospital in the evening.
He said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under a Deputy Superintendent of Police-rank officer will be formed to probe the incident and nab bootleggers who sold the spurious liquor.
Terming the incident "unfortunate" Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is on a Gujarat visit, alleged that illegal liquor is being sold in large quantities in Gujarat where prohibition is in place.
He alleged that people selling illicit liquor are enjoying political protection and demanded a probe into the "trail" of money generated by selling booze.
"It is unfortunate that despite prohibition, illegal liquor is sold in huge quantities in Gujarat. Who are the people who sell illegal liquor? They enjoy political protection. Where does the money (generated by selling illegal liquor) go? This needs to be probed," he told reporters in Porbandar.
The Gujarat Prohibition Act, earlier known as the Bombay Prohibition Act, 1949, empowers the police to arrest a person for purchasing, consuming or serving alcohol without a permit with punishment ranging from three months to five years in prison. It also penalises the transporting of liquor.

"The remarks by OHCHR are completely unwarranted and constitute an interference in India's independent judicial system," he said.

Former IPS officer and accused Sanjiv Bhatt, who is serving a life sentence in a custodial death case and is lodged in a jail in Palanpur in Banaskantha district, will be brought to Ahmedabad on a transfer warrant.
Setalvad, Sreekumar and Bhatt are accused of abusing the process of law by conspiring to fabricate evidence with an attempt to frame innocent people for an offence punishable with capital punishment in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots.
