President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday underscored the transformative power of education, calling it the most effective means of empowerment, as she inaugurated key facilities at Mahayogi Gorakhnath University here.
The event marked the inauguration of the university's academic block, auditorium, Panchakarma Centre, and the foundation laying of a new girls' hostel during the second day of the president's visit to Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing the gathering, Murmu said, "Education is the strongest medium of empowerment. The establishment of a new girls' hostel by the university is a major step towards promoting higher education for women. I deeply appreciate this initiative as a valuable contribution to women's empowerment." She recounted her own experience from more than five decades ago, when she had to travel nearly 300 km from her village in Odisha to the state capital, Bhubaneswar, to pursue further education -- an uncommon journey for a girl in her village at the time.
Murmu said she was pleased to inaugurate the new academic facilities and hoped they would encourage students and faculty alike to pursue learning with greater dedication.
She also lauded the newly inaugurated Panchakarma Centre, noting the effectiveness of the traditional Ayurvedic therapy in treating complex ailments. "I believe many people will benefit from this new facility," she said.
Hailing the university's efforts in extending higher education opportunities in eastern Uttar Pradesh, she commended Gorakhnath Peeth and Maharana Pratap Shiksha Parishad for their dedication to national and cultural values.
She noted that this is the first private university in the region contributing to higher education, aligning with the philanthropic spirit promoted by the National Education Policy 2020.

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur on Monday afternoon, where she will grace the first convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), officials said.
The president will award medals to meritorious students from the institute's first graduating batch and deliver a keynote address to inspire the budding medical professionals.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed her on arrival in Gorakhpur. Governor Anandiben Patel was also among those present.
"Hearty welcome to Hon'ble President Droupadi Murmu ji on the holy land of Gorakhpur, the austerity place of Shiva avatar Mahayogi Guru Shri Gorakhnath ji," Adityanath posted on X in Hindi.
In an official statement issued on Sunday the state government had said AIIMS-Gorakhpur has fast emerged as the dream destination for medical services across eastern Uttar Pradesh, neighbouring Bihar and even the bordering regions of Nepal.
On July 22, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for AIIMS, Gorakhpur, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, it said.
It was inaugurated by Modi on December 7, 2021, and in the last four years it has emerged as lifeline for nearly five crore people, it added.

15 dead in collision between bus and truck in MP

On being alerted about the incident, police personnel from Sohagi rushed to the site

Fourteen persons were killed and more than 35 others injured after a bus collided with a stationary truck in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Saturday.
The accident occurred around 11.30 pm on Friday, he said.
"The bus was on its way to Gorakhpur from Hyderabad when it collided with a stationary trailer-truck on national highway (NH) 30 near Sohagi ghati area," Rewa collector Manoj Pushp said.
"Fourteen persons were killed in the accident, which left more than 35 others injured," he said.
On being alerted about the incident, police personnel from Sohagi rushed to the site and launched a rescue operation.
Majority of the bus passengers were labourers and they were on their way home for the Diwali festival, eyewitnesses said.
The injured were rushed to a hospital in Teonthar town, he said.

A draft delimitation order issued by the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation in Uttar Pradesh has changed the "Muslim-sounding names" of around a dozen wards, prompting a sharp reaction from leaders of the Samajwadi Party and the Congress.
The changing of names was part of the delimitation exercise, under which the number of wards went up to 80 in Gorakhpur, with several of these named after iconic personalities and freedom fighters.
A senior official said on Saturday that people can file their objections within a week and after their disposal, the delimitation will be approved.
Samajwadi Party leader and Ismailpur corporator Shahab Ansari said that changing of names is an attempt at polarisation.

Congress leader Talat Aziz termed the name-changing exercise as a waste of money. "I fail to understand what the government will achieve through this exercise," the leader asked.
Mayor Sitaram Jaiswal said new names evoke the feeling of pride.
He said wards were named after personalities like Ashfaqullah Khan, Shiv Singh Chetri, Baba Gambhir Nath, Baba Raghavdas, Dr Rajendra Prasad and Madan Mohan Malviya.
Municipal Commissioner Avinash Singh said objections can be sent within a week to the additional chief secretary, Urban Development Department, Lucknow. After the disposal of the objections, the delimitation will be approved, he said.
Gorakhpur, the home town of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, will now have 80 wards.
Miya Bazar, Muftipur, Alinagar, Turkmanpur, Ismailpur, Rassolpur, Humayunpur North, Ghosipurva, Daudpur, Jafra Bazar, Qazipur Khurd and Chaksa Hussain are among the "Muslim-sounding names" that have been changed.
According to the order issued by the civic body, Ilahi Bagh will now be known as Bandhu Singh Nagar, Ismailpur as Sahabganj and Jafra Bazar as Atma Ram Nagar.

First a look at the Gorakhpur Sadar seat.
There are over 4 lakh voters in the Assembly constituency, most of which are Thakurs and Brahmins. Add to that about 40,000 Nishad community votes to the BJP kitty as Nishad Party is an ally.
Dalit voters, who are Azad's main catchment area, don't have much sway in this seat.

First a look at the Gorakhpur Sadar seat.
There are over 4 lakh voters in the Assembly constituency, most of which are Thakurs and Brahmins. Add to that about 40,000 Nishad community votes to the BJP kitty as Nishad Party is an ally.
Dalit voters, who are Azad's main catchment area, don't have much sway in this seat.
The Gorakhpur Sadar assembly seat has been with the BJP continuously since 1989, except once when it was won by an affiliate. In 2017, the BJP's Radha Mohan Das Agarwal won the seat by a margin of over 60,000 votes.

The Shakti Sadan Vs Haata rivalry later turned into Mutt Vs Haata as the Gorakhpur peeth, now controlled by Yogi Adityanath, is a Thakur institution.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Such was his influence over politics that Hari Shankar Tiwari has been a minister in every UP government since the 90s. Be it Kalyan Singh, Rajnath Singh, Mulayam&nbsp; Singh or Mayawati, no CM could ignore the house of Tiwaris.&nbsp;
Throughout his political journey, Hari Shankar Tiwari lost only two elections, once in 2007, and then in 2012, after which he did not contest any election. However, his political influence is still intact as he established his family in the politics of the state. He regained control over his traditional seat of Chillupaar in 2017, though this time, it was his son Vinay Shankar Tiwari, who managed to become an MLA on BSP ticket from Yogi's stronghold despite the Modi wave.

For BSP,&nbsp;it's a big jolt as the party has been attempting to revive the Dalit-Brahmin alliance that gave it majority in 2007. And Tiwaris played a big part in getting upper castes closer to Behenji.

The cops entered Tiwari's Haata on the pretext of looking for a criminal who they alleged was hiding in the Haata. Later it turned out the criminal was already in Ballia jail for three months before the raid. This is the first time that police entered Haata in decades.&nbsp;
Such is the bitterness between the Mutt and the Haata that Tiwaris and Yogi have not met once in last five years.&nbsp;

The three ambitious projects include an AIIMS, a major fertiliser plant and ICMR's regional unit Regional Medical Research Centre.
All the three projects combined are worth over Rs 9,600 crore.
The fertiliser plant worth Rs 8,603 crore will produce 12.7 lakh metric tons of neem-coated urea per year, state officials said, adding the project will not only bring prosperity to farmers’ lives but also create 20,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities for youths.
The Gorakhpur AIIMS, built for Rs 1,011 crore, will benefit not only the people of eastern UP but also a huge population of Bihar, Jharkhand and Nepal with its world-class health facilities.
Similarly, the regional medical research centre worth Rs 36 crore will facilitate the test and research of vector-borne diseases.

Six policemen have been suspended after the incident and an FIR has been filed against them on a complaint by the wife of the dead businessman.
Rs 10 lakh will be paid as compensation to the businessman's family as directed by the Chief Minister, said police.
One of the men staying with Gupta at the hotel told mediapersons that cops knocked at their room at midnight and threatened them. He also alleged that the policemen&nbsp;appeared drunk and assaulted the occupants. "A while later, I saw Manish was being dragged out of the room by the cops and there was blood all over his face," he added.
The Gorakhpur Police claim they had received information about 'suspicious' men staying at the hotel.
The victim's wife told the media she was not convinced with the police's explanation.
"Just 10 minutes before his death, he was speaking to me and then he cut the call saying the cops are here. I believe he later called another relative saying the police were harassing and threatening him and asking him to accompany them to the police station. I want answers to how he died," Meenakshi Gupta, the wife of the dead property dealer, said.

A coronavirus positive woman delivered four babies at BRD Medical College in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district, officials said on Thursday. While three babies are healthy, the fourth one is on a ventilator.&nbsp;The 26-year-old woman from&nbsp;Deoria district reached the medical college's trauma centre on Tuesday night and tested positive there.&nbsp;As per the doctors, the delivery was premature.

Gorakhpur, PTI: A coronavirus positive woman delivered four babies at BRD Medical College in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district, officials said on Thursday.
"While three babies are healthy, the fourth one is on a ventilator. The mother is also healthy," BRD Medical College Principal Ganesh Kumar said.
The 26-year-old woman, a resident of Deoria district's Gauri Bazar, reached the medical college's trauma centre on Tuesday night and tested positive there.
With the efficient team of doctors and paramedical staff, the woman delivered the quadruplets on Wednesday, he said.
As per the doctors, the delivery was premature and the weight of the four babies is between 980 grams to 1.5 kg. The mother is feeding three babies while one is on ventilator support.
The principal said such cases are very rare and delivery is also quite challenging.
However, the mother and three of the newborns are healthy with the samples of all four babies sent to the microbiology department for coronavirus test.
