I don't know how I became a star, says actor Aamir Khan, stressing that in his career of over 30 years, he did everything that broke the many "rules" of stardom.
Speaking at a session during the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the 60-year-old actor said his filmography comprises of films that were "impractical".
"I don't know how I became a star. By all logic, I should not have been a star. I broke all the rules and I made everything impractical. So, I feel grateful that I received so much respect and success. Otherwise, practically speaking, none of the steps I took were from the point of view of achieving success," Aamir said.
Whether it was "Sarfarosh", "Lagaan", "Ghajini", "Taare Zameen Par", or his latest "Sitaare Zameen Par", the actor said all of them were experimental and shouldn't have worked at the box office.
"In fact, almost every film I used to pick, I used to be like, 'I don't know whether this is going to work.' Like 'Sarfarosh' and 'Lagaan', when we were releasing the film, we had no idea if people are going to like it or not."
"Then 'Lagaan', there was even 'Dil Chahta Hai' which was very unusual for its time and now 'Sitaare Zameen Par', all these films that I have picked, they were not meant to be successful," he added.
During the session, titled "The Narrative Architect of Social Transformation", Aamir said he likes to "surprise my audience and myself" as an actor.
"I don't want to do the same thing again and again. It's just out of how I am as a personality that I have picked different scripts. And I have always gone with what excites me, personally."
Aamir said these days a lot of film people tend to try and second guess the audience.
"They are like, 'What is it that I should make today?' The obvious answer is what people are watching and what are the films running nowadays in the market. So, you try and make that genre."
"If it's action, you make action. If it's comedy, you try and pick up a comedy film. But I have never thought that way. I have not been able to think that way. I pick films based on my own personal excitement towards the story. And most often, that goes against what is the norm at that time."
Aamir said when he did "Ghajini" in 2008, action films were not being made in the industry.
"Everyone told me that, 'Man, you are doing action now. Action films are not running nowadays.' So, 'Ghajini' came in and with it, action came in to fashion," he said.
Aamir's last release was "Sitaare Zameen Par", which released in theatres in June, followed by its digital release on YouTube under pay per view model.
Directed by R S Prasanna, the movie featured Aamir as Gulshan, an assistant coach of a major basketball team. After being fired from his job, he is ordered to either go to jail or do 90 days of community service as the coach of a team of specially-abled basketball players.
Aamir said he was surprised by the success of the film, which earned over Rs 250 crore at the box office.
"The audience has proved everyone wrong in the way the film got a reaction. The kind of love and respect the film got was unprecedented. So, I am really happy that audiences don't only want to watch one kind of film."
"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what genre you are making it, what genre you are working in, but every film that you make has to be really hitting on the right notes. So, even if you are making an action film, at the end of the day, you need a good story for that."
Aamir's films have often been praised for providing entertainment with a dose of message, whether it was "Sitaare Zameen Par", which spoke about neurodivergent children or his earlier films like "Taare Zameen Par", "Dangal" and "3 Idiots".
The actor, however, stressed that he is not someone who picks up social causes actively.
"I am not an activist and nor am I someone who is interested in actively taking up issues. That's not me. What is me is storytelling, what is me is films. That's my world. And I am very sharply aware that when a person comes to a cinema hall, he or she is not coming there for a lesson in sociology. For that, they would go to a college," he said.
His first and primary responsibility is to entertain audiences and Aamir said he is aware of that.
"But the word entertain is not just make you laugh. I can make you cry also and entertain you. Basically, I want to engage you in one way or the other. I can scare you by making a horror film. I can make a suspense thriller. I can make a family drama. I can make different genres."
The actor said he is now looking for his next film.
"I am deciding which one to do. So, I am not thinking and have never thought that which is the next social topic I should pick up. That does not occur to me at all. So, the first attraction for me is the great script. And if that great script is also telling us something which is socially relevant, it's all the better. But I am not trying to look for social themes," Aamir said.

Goa has received central grants of Rs 383.20 crore over the past eight years for various projects, including a museum dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, in the coastal state, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has said.
The Centre released the funds between March 2017 and June 2025, he told the legislative assembly on Thursday.
The minister said that Rs 97.65 crore has been received for the development of Coastal Circuit One, covering the beaches of Sinquerim, Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim Keri and Aguada Fort and Aguada jail in the North Goa district.
Similarly, Rs 99.35 crore has been provided to the state for the development of Coastal Circuit Two, covering Rua de Orem creek to Dona Paula in Panaji and Benaulim in South Goa, he said in a written reply to a question by BJP MLA Krishna Daji Salkar.
The minister said that Rs 4.67 crore was spent on infrastructure development around Bom Jesus Basilica in Old Goa under the &lsquo;PRASHAD&rsquo; scheme of the Union Ministry of Tourism. The Basilica at Old Goa is home to the relics of St Francis Xavier.
The Centre has also released Rs 4.14 crore under its &lsquo;Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0&rsquo; to develop the Colva beach in South Goa and enhance the &ldquo;creek experience&rdquo; at Porvorim in North Goa, he said.
According to the minister, Rs 50 crore has been received under the Centre&rsquo;s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment for the &lsquo;Unity Mall&rsquo; project at Chimbal village near Panaji. The Centre has also granted Rs 124 crore to Goa for the development of iconic tourist centres, the minister said.
He said the state government has proposed two major projects, including the Town Square at Porvorim and a museum dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Farmagudi, Ponda.

The Goa assembly has passed a bill aimed at streamlining the process of valuing civil suits, particularly those related to land, for the purpose of determining the jurisdiction of courts.
The Goa Suits Valuation Bill, 2025, empowers the state government, in consultation with the high court, to frame rules for determining land values across different areas, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said in the House where the legislation was passed on Wednesday.
Uniformity in valuation is essential for reducing disputes and confusion regarding jurisdiction and fees, he added.
The bill, moved by CM Sawant in the House, seeks to align the valuation process with the recently enacted Goa Court Fees Act, 2024, and replaces the Goa Suits Valuation Act, 1965.
Sawant told the House that the legislation will simplify how suits, specially those involving land or interest in land, are valued for court jurisdiction and court fee purposes.
The bill aims to provide a new framework for valuing suits in Goa, aligning with the provisions of the Goa Court Fees Act, 2024 (Goa Act 15 of 2024) and ensuring consistency and clarity in the valuation process, which is essential for determining court fees and jurisdiction.
The principal object of this bill is to prescribe a simple mode of valuing suits pertaining to land for the purpose of determining the jurisdiction of those courts with respect to them. Most of those suits are cognisable exclusively by civil courts, as per the bill details.
The legislation also ensures that in certain categories of suits, the court fee and jurisdictional value will be treated as the same, and it includes safeguards to prevent unnecessary appeals based on technical objections over valuation.
The legislation empowers the high court to fix notional values for categories of cases that are difficult to quantify. It also outlines procedures to raise jurisdictional objections and lays down conditions under which such objections may be entertained by appellate or revisional courts.
The bill will come into force on a date to be notified by the state government and includes a two-year window for issuing orders to remove any difficulties during its implementation.
Outgoing Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai had granted his recommendation for the introduction of the bill under Article 207 of the Constitution.

The Pramod Sawant government has rolled out Goa AI Mission 2027, a visionary roadmap to build an inclusive and future-ready Artificial Intelligence ecosystem, officials said.
The mission, a bold leap from Goa's laid-back coastal charm to cutting-edge tech ambition, aims to empower people, enhance governance and spark innovation across sectors, placing the state firmly on the digital transformation map, they said.
In a recently held meeting, Chief Minister Sawant and state Information Technology Minister Rohan Khaunte appealed to stakeholders to work towards drafting the AI Mission 2027, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision.
Nearly 350 Information Technology companies and startups are operating in Goa, as per data from the IT department.
Goa Information and Technology Director Kabir Shirgaonkar told PTI Videos that the state government's AI mission is derived from the Centre's ambitious India AI Mission.
"We intend to meet various objectives through this mission, and one of them is create an inclusive and future-friendly AI ecosystem to empower citizens, enhance governance and support innovation across sectors," he said.
The government's predominant focus under the Goa AI Mission 2027 would be on setting up Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) to increase compute capacity, Shirgaonkar said.
"There's also the concept of an AI Coach. When talking about AI, datasets are very important. The Government of Goa will play an active role in preparing datasets, as you all know, the government possesses a vast amount of data, and these datasets will be critical when working with AI," he said.
Shirgaonkar said the ethical use of AI will also be a major focus area as the Goa government moves forward.
"Some of the major highlights of the Goa AI Mission include the formulation of a Goa AI Policy," he said, adding the AI Advisory Council has already been formulated.
"The AI Advisory Council, a multi-stakeholder body, aims to provide strategic direction and ensure consistent implementation across domains. So, the first step is the formation of the council, followed by drafting of the Goa AI Policy," he explained.
Shirgaonkar further said the focus will also include AI education, the setting up of Goa AI Labs, and the development of a Konkani Large Language Model (LLM).
"As you know, language models are essential, and developing a Konkani LLM will be one of our key priorities. We aim to use AI to preserve and promote Goa's cultural and linguistic heritage through this locally built LLM in Konkani," he said.
Specifically, the Goa AI Mission will rest on four core pillars -- skilling, startups and companies, capital, and government and infrastructure, the official said.
"Under the 'skilling' pillar, we will target colleges and schools to ensure that AI education is integrated at all levels so that our future generation is AI-ready," he said.
Amarsh Chaturvedi, co-founder of Neural Private Ltd in Panaji, said his is an AI first startup, working with enterprises to help scale their AI initiators with ease and comfort.
"We are also glad to be a part of the AI state mission in Goa, which is one of the pioneering initiatives in the country," he added.
Goa is one of the "very, very few states in the country" which is looking at AI and making the state ready for the future in technology, Chaturvedi said.
He said the Goa AI Mission 2027 also aims at bringing together academia, industry, startups and the government to fulfil multiple objectives.
"The first one being making the population of Goa AI ready, and this also entails skilling and reskilling people to work with AI, not just as users, but also creators," he said.
The mission also includes building the core infrastructure to carry out foundational research, not just physical infrastructure, but digital infrastructure that could entail collaboration of academia in Goa with universities elsewhere in the world, Chaturvedi said.
"So, from a holistic perspective, the intent is right and the steps that are being planned to undertake and fulfil the objectives of this mission are also in the right place," he added.
Milind Prabhu, CEO of Genora Infotech Pvt Ltd, Goa, said he was very happy to hear about the state government's initiative.
It is a great initiative as Goa is a preferred place for innovative work to be done and AI is the next tech innovation that is happening, he said.
"So, it's a great thing that we are focussing on it," Prabhu added.

The Forest Rights Act is primarily known for protecting the land rights of tribal communities, but it is also benefiting several other groups, covering a wider section of society, in Goa, a senior official has said.
Ajay Ramchandra Gaude, state nodal officer for the implementation of the Act in the coastal state, said that of the 10,136 claims they have received, more than 4,000 have been made by &lsquo;Other Forest Dwellers' (OTFDs).
The Goa government under Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced that it will clear all land claims filed under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, popularly known as the Forest Rights Act, before December 19.
Gaude told PTI Videos that most of the claims have been received from the talukas of Canacona and Dharbandora in South Goa and Sattari in North Goa.
In Sattari, of the 2,460 claims settled so far, only 46 belong to members of the Scheduled Tribe community, while 2,414 have been filed by those from non-ST groups. As far as claims filed by groups as a single entity, no such requests have come from the ST community. However, 22 similar claims have been filed by OTFDs, he said.
According to the official, anybody belonging to any community, caste, or any religion can put in their claims if they live in the forest and depend on forest produce for sustenance.
In Dharbandora taluka, of the 1,704 claims settled, 761 are of tribals, 964 are non-ST beneficiaries. Of the 73 community claims in this taluka, 26 are of ST beneficiaries and 47 are from non-ST groups, the official said.
Gaude said the Forest Rights Act was brought in to help those living in forest areas for years and depending on forest produce.
&ldquo;So, the Forest Rights Act is basically for everyone. There is a misconception that the Forest Rights Act is only for the tribal community. It is not so,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s not just the tribal community that is benefiting under the Act. Through these forest rights claims, we are giving &lsquo;sanads&rsquo; (certificates giving right over land) to different communities in the state of Goa,&rdquo; he said.
However, the scene is different in the Canacona taluka, where all the 2,450 individuals whose claims are being settled belong to the ST community.
Vishant Ranganath Khandeparkar, a resident of Codli village in Dharbandora taluka, said his forefathers cultivated their land for more than 100 years.
&ldquo;After them, I am continuing it. Through the Act, we have got the sanad. The government and the forest department have done a good job,&rdquo; said the non-ST beneficiary.
Babita Nagesh Lambor, another non-tribal claimant and resident of Collem village in Dharbandora taluka, said they have been living in forest areas for over a century.
&ldquo;Earlier, we used to grow rice, sugarcane, cashewnut, coconut, and much more. We have got the sanad from the government and subsequently received benefits from the Agriculture Department,&rdquo; she said.

According to the police, 18-month-old Anabiya Shaikh was playing outside her uncle's house when a pack of four to five stray dogs attacked her.
The child was rushed to a nearby government-run hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Talking to reporters, Anand Naik, chairperson of the Ponda Municipal Council, said the civic body is trying its best to control the stray dog menace and has entered an agreement with the NGO People for Animals to sterilise the animals.
"We have proposed a shelter home for stray dogs to control the menace," he said while condemning the incident.

 "A casual, fun dip in the waves was interrupted by an underwater current that toppled both of us. The next thing we knew, we were struggling to stay afloat," he wrote in an Instagram post.

Despite their swimming experience, the couple found themselves struggling against the strong current. After nearly 10 minutes of trying to stay above water, they called for help. A family consisting of an IPS officer and his IRS wife swiftly came to their rescue and pulled them to safety.
Allahbadia explained that although he had encountered underwater currents before, this was the first time he had faced such a challenge with someone else. "It's easy to swim out of one alone. It's very hard to pull someone out with you," he shared.
The 31-year-old further recounted the harrowing experience, saying, "There was a point where I swallowed a lot of water and started fading away. That's when I decided to shout for help. Deep gratitude to the family...who saved us both. This experience left us feeling both blank as well as grateful. We felt the protection of God throughout the incident."
Reflecting on the ordeal, Allahbadia described it as a profound moment that changed his outlook on life. He acknowledged the near-death experience, calling it a brush with the "life-death barrier," and ended his post with gratitude, adding, "We lived for a reason."

The shutdown started on Monday under the banner of the Quraishi Meat Traders Association (QMTA).
In a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the association claimed there was an increase in attacks from right-wing Hindu organisations on shops which sell beef legally.
&ldquo;The recent attack happened in Margao. We want action against these groups. We need protection from the government,&rdquo; said Abdul Bepari, a QMTA member.

As per government statistics, 20-25 tonnes of beef is sold in the coastal state daily, and the sales increase during tourist and festive seasons.
Congress MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira told reporters on Monday that incidents of vigilantism were occurring across the state. &ldquo;Whether it is meat traders or any organisation, one must abide by the law,&rdquo; he said.
There have been instances where mobs suddenly entered houses to check the fridge or cupboard for beef, he said. &ldquo;This is absolutely trespassing and they have no authority to go there,&rdquo; the MLA added.
Cow vigilante groups also demand that they be allowed to inspect meat at shops though they do not have any authority, said Ferreira.
&ldquo;These people do not belong to any recognised bodies, and even if they are recognised (organisations), they have no right to enter shops and do such activities,&rdquo; he said.
Chief Minister Sawant on Monday had said the state-run Goa Meat Complex Limited will cater to the beef requirement. &ldquo;The meat complex provides hygienic beef,&rdquo; he had said.

The India Meteorological Department has declared 'red alert' for the state till Tuesday.

All 80 people stuck at Pali waterfall in Goa's Sattari taluka were rescued on Sunday by the state's Fire and Emergency Services and the police, an official said.
These persons had got stranded after sudden increase in water upstream and the river that has to be crossed to reach the waterfall got swollen by afternoon amid heavy rains in the region through the weekend, the official said.
There was heavy rush of visitors at the site since it was a Sunday, he said.
"All 80 people have been rescued from Pali waterfall. No casualty has been reported. The rescue operation was carried out along with Goa Fire and Emergency Services," Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal told PTI in the evening.
According to officials, the rescue operation began after people stranded there alerted Valpoi police station and sought help.
In another development, the state education department declared holiday for schools on Monday in view of the incessant rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared 'red alert' for the state till Tuesday.
"In view of incessant rains and alert issued by IMD, Goa centre predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, and keeping in mind safety of young children, it has been decided to declare holiday on Monday for all schools in the state," the circular issued by state education director Shailesh Zingade said.
"It is also clarified the holiday is for the students as well as teachers. However, teachers deputed for training shall report for training," the circular added.
The education department asked students to stay indoors and not venture into flooded streets, riversides and other such hazardous locations amid heavy rains.

"We found gold pieces weighing 2.23 kilograms, 5,000 antique coins, 307 copper coins of different dates cumulatively weighing 3.15 kilograms, 814 coins weighing 4.78 kilograms with inscriptions in Arabic, 786 copper coins with Queen Victoria written, household items like tumblers etc," Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said.
He added said that the strongbox was opened just for the second time since Goa was liberated in 1961. It was first opened in 1991.&nbsp;
The Indian Express reported that the treasure included items from the reign of William IV of the British Empire, the Victorian era and &nbsp;King Joao VI of Portugal.&nbsp;
The Directorate of Accounts office was recently shifted from Panaji to the new 'Lekha Bhavan' in Porvorim and the strongbox was opened as it needed to be moved to the new structure, Sawant said.
"All the items were documented and kept back in the box. Some samples of these items would be displayed in the state museum," the CM told reporters.&nbsp;

Tension prevailed in a village near Margao town in Goa after some people installed a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, while another group took objection, leading to a police posse being stationed there to maintain peace, an official said on Monday.
The day marks the 394th birth anniversary of the Maratha emperor and events are held across the state to celebrate it.
The life-size statue was installed in Sao Jose De Areal village on Sunday, which led to a verbal altercation between two groups, the official said.
"The situation is under control and police personnel have been deployed in the village," Superintendent of Police (South) Sunita Sawant said.
Goa social welfare minister Subhash Phal Desai, who visited the village on Sunday, said the statue was installed on private land and all permissions from the local panchayat were obtained and the deputy collector was informed.
"No one must have any objection to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Some political forces are instigating locals against the installation of the statue," he said.
Taking to X on Monday, local BJP leader Savio Rodrigues said, "As an Indian Christian I have the highest respect for the contribution of Chhatrapati Shivaji towards protecting our motherland. I am disappointed that some in Goa equate his sacrifices for our motherland as a point of contention to play their communal politics." Shivaji was a hardcore nationalist and every Indian must be inspired by him because of his immense valour and devotion to Bharat Mata, Rodrigues further said.

The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), late last month, unanimously banned Gobi Manchurian stalls in Shree Bodgeshwar Zatra in Mapusa. They cited hygiene issues as the main cause. The concern stems from poor hygiene, the use of artificial colors, and the inclusion of powdered laundry detergent and questionable sauces.
A senior food safety officer (FSO) at the FDA said that sellers had been fined by the authorities for using low quality. &ldquo;They keep the quality sauce on display but use substandard ones for the preparation of gobi manchurian. They use some kind of powder in the flour and cornstarch in the batter so that after deep frying, the cauliflower florets remain crispy for a long time,&rdquo; the FDA officer told TOI.
According to the officer, this powder is a sort of reetha, used in washing clothes.
The Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson Priya Mishal further spoke about the ban and said, &ldquo;The councillors opined that such vendors operate in unhygienic conditions and use synthetic colours for making gobi Manchurian and that is what has prompted us to ban the sale of this dish.&rdquo;
Previously in 2022, the FDA had raided food stalls in Ponda, for unhygienic health conditions.

Stranger's video reveals Goa hotel manager drowned wife, arrested by police

A 29-year-old manager of a luxury hotel in South Goa was arrested on Saturday for allegedly drowning his wife at Cabo de Rama beach in Goa a day before, police said.
The accused, identified as Gaurav Katiyar, tried to project the death of his wife Diksha Gangwar (27) as an accident after committing the crime, but a video shot by a man exposed his claim.
Police found the body of Gangwar near the popular beach on Friday afternoon.
Prima facie, Katiyar killed Gangwar, whom he married a year ago, over his extramarital affair, an official said.
"The incident occurred at around 3.45 pm on Friday after Katiyar took his wife for a stroll on the beach, located not far from his workplace," the official said.
He took her to a rocky area of the beach and drowned her in the sea. "Injury marks were found on her body," the official added.
After committing the crime, Katiyar created commotion and tried to pass off the incident as an accident, he said.
Cuncolim police had also arrived at the spot.
According to the official, a video shot by a local exposed Katiyar's claims.
The video clip shows Katiyar coming out of the beach and returning apparently to ensure whether his wife has died, before raising the alarm to create the entire drama, he added.
The accused and the victim hail from Lucknow.

Suchana Seth, the chief executive officer (CEO) of an artificial intelligence start-up, was apprehended in Chitradurga in Karnataka on Monday night while she was on her way from Goa to Bengaluru, and the boy's body was found in a suitcase. She was arrested on the directions of the Goa Police.

The Goa government has made it mandatory for beach shacks to sell the state's staple fish curry-rice.

Shacks on Goa&rsquo;s beaches will now have to mandatorily serve &ldquo;fish curry-rice&rdquo;, a staple of the coastal state, along with other Indian and international cuisines, said tourism minister Rohan Khaunte on Sunday.
The compulsory inclusion of the coconut-based preparation, savoured for its tangy and spicy taste, in the menu of the joints is part of the state&rsquo;s new Shack Policy that aims to promote the Goan cuisine, the minister said.
Up until now, shacks along the shoreline offered North Indian food but Goan dishes were not available at these places, he said.
The government has now made it compulsory for shacks to "display and serve" the Goan food, including "fish curry-rice", he said.
"We have to project our rich cuisine to tourists,&rdquo; Khaunte said.
The tourism minister said that the Shack Policy, which was recently passed by the cabinet, also intends to address the challenge of illegal hawking and vending on the beaches.
He said that many women, who were involved in illegal hawking and vending on beaches, would pretend to be working at the shacks when they were apprehended by tourism department officials.
&ldquo;The new policy has mandated that each shack will have to submit the list of its staff to the department,&rdquo; he said. Those indulging in illegalities on beaches will face action, he said.
Khaunte said the department is cooperating with shack operators in possible ways, but they should also ensure that tourism is not hampered due to their actions.
He said that the state is working with a vision of quality over quantity but that won&rsquo;t happen overnight.
&ldquo;We have to work on our basic infrastructure. Anything related to tourism, we have to ensure that Goa as a tourism state has to have all the infrastructure to support the tourism industry,&rdquo; he said.
The minister said that hotels in Goa are recording an average of 80 per cent occupancy. &ldquo;The hoteliers are happy over the occupancy. But you cannot take things for granted. If there is a drop in occupancy, the hotel owners will blame the government,&rdquo; Khaunte said.
He said that the state has to step up efforts to promote tourism for which the department and other stakeholders will have to work together.

Goa's BJP govt to learn disaster management from Communist-ruled Kerala

190 claims amounting to Rs 32 lakh in connection with the destruction to the property due to heavy rains.&nbsp;

The Goa government will study Kerala's disaster management mechanism, state minister Atanasio Monserratte said in the Assembly on Monday.
Speaking during demands for grants of the revenue department, Monserratte said a state disaster management authority had been formed in Goa.
"We will be sending our team to Kerala to study their disaster management model. Kerala has a good disaster management plan," he said in response to Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who had sought an efficient disaster management plan for Goa.
Monserratte also informed the House that his department had recently cleared 190 claims amounting to Rs 32 lakh in connection with destruction to the property due to heavy rains.&nbsp;
