The Murugappa family who are the promoters of Chennai based diversified Murugappa Group has announced a settlement agreement with Valli Arunachalam and other members of the family. With this, the group has put an end to the fight over board representation that arose after the death of former Murugappa group chairman MV Murugappan.
Without disclosing the details, the family in a statement has said that the family members have agreed to settle the dispute between late MV Murugappan's family and the rest of the clan. The members of the Murugappa family first discussed and concluded the terms of the family arrangement amongst themselves at a meeting in the presence of their respective advisors. As per the statement the family members would complete the necessary transactions within the next 90 days.
&ldquo;The family arrangement ensures that all the issues between the members will be setled, and they are happy that they have agreed to resolve this amicably. The terms of the family arrangement itself are confidential", said representatives for the family members.
The statement also said that the settlement does not involve any of the listed companies forming part of the Murugappa group.&nbsp;
"No listed company forming part of the Murugappa Group is a party to the family arrangement, and nothing in the family arrangement relates to the management or control of, or grants any special rights to the parties in, any such companies", said the statement.
<h2>The Feud</h2>
The Murugappa feud caught the public attention when Valli Arunachalam - eldest daughter of former group chairman late MV Murugappa decided to fight gender bias within the Murugappa group. Arunachalam had accused her uncles and cousin brothers of denying her a seat on the board because of her gender. Valli Arunachalam, her sister &nbsp;and their mother, has been demanding a board seat in Murugappa Group&rsquo;s holding company Ambadi Investments (AIL) or a suitable value for their 8.23% holdings in the entity.&nbsp;
As per media reports, MV Murugappa who passed away in 2017 bequeathed everything for his wife Valli Murugappan and daughters. According to his will, the Murugappa family business spanned over five generations. The family holds 91% stake in the public unlisted company.&nbsp;
"In August 2019, we asked for a board position. I have been repeatedly following up with them and asked them for meeting, but it has fallen on deaf ears. Every branch of the third generation has a representation on the Ambadi board, except ours," Valli Arunachalam had told Business Today.&nbsp;
Over the 120 years since its launch, this was the first time that a patriarch of the Murugappa family had passed away without a &lsquo;male&rsquo; heir. Valli Arunachalam who is the fourth generation of the family has been fighting her uncles to change the patriarchal norms in the inheritance prospect of the company.
"The family has always had this unwritten rule of not allowing women to get trained in the family business. So, while we are well trained and can very easily plug into the family business, we have never been given that opportunity", Arunachalam had told Business Today. She further went on to allege that male heirs with less qualification and experience warrants a position in the board. She had also alleged that the current patriarch MV Subbiah endorses that policy.&nbsp;

The never-ending debate around gender parity and discrimination now literally seems everlasting, as World Economic Forum (WEF) research states that it might take another 131 years for women to come at par with men in terms of equality. &nbsp;
The overall gender gap across various fields like economy, politics, health and education closed by just 0.3% as compared to last year, according to the Global Gender Gap Report 2023 released by WEF. Although overall parity has improved by 4.1 percent according to WEF in that was launched in 2006.&nbsp;
Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director at the WEF, said, &ldquo;The tepid progress in closing those gaps and indications of parity slipping in areas such as the economy create an &ldquo;urgent case for renewed and concerted action.&rdquo; &nbsp; Zahidi added, &ldquo;Recent years have been marked by major setbacks for gender parity globally, with previous progress disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic&rsquo;s impact on women and girls in education and the workforce, followed by economic and geopolitical crises. Today, some parts of the world are seeing partial recoveries while others are experiencing deteriorations as new crises unfold.&rdquo;&nbsp;
The WEF&rsquo;s Gender Gap Index considered data from 146 countries across four categories, economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival and political empowerment. &nbsp; And it was found that only nine countries, Iceland, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, Nicaragua, Namibia and Lithuania have been able to close 80% of their gap. And Iceland is the most gender-equal country being able to close 91.2% of its gap. The United States is 43rd, with a parity score of 74.8%.&nbsp;
According to the report, &ldquo;The recovery from the shock and ensuing polycrisis has been slow and, so far, incomplete, and the current context, coupled with technological and climate change, risks causing further regression in women&rsquo;s economic empowerment. In a historic step to quell gender discrimination, BCCI has decided to provide the same pay to women cricketers as their male counterparts. BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a statement released on Thursday announced, 'As a first step towards tackling discrimination, BCCI is implementing pay equity policy for our contracted Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket' While it will be for the first time that the men's and women's professional cricketers will be combined under one agreement, BCCI announced that the women cricketers would be paid 15 lakhs for a Test, 6 lakhs for ODI, and 3 lakhs for a T20I. Jay Shah, in his series of Tweets further added, 'pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support'

Gender discrimination is the reason for 98 per cent of employment gap between males and females in India, according to a new report of Oxfam India.
The report highlighted that woman in India despite their same educational qualification and work experience as men will be discriminated in the labour market due to societal and employers' prejudices.
The Oxfam India's 'India Discrimination Report 2022' shows that discrimination causes 100 per cent of employment inequality faced by women in rural areas in labour market and 98 per cent in urban areas.
The report said self-employed males earn 2.5 times more than females, 83 per cent of which is attributed to gender-based discrimination and 95 per cent of the gap between the earnings of male and female casual wage workers is due to discrimination.
According to the report, gender discrimination is the reason for 98 per cent of the employment gap between males and females.
“Woman in India despite their same educational qualification and work experience as men will be discriminated in the labour market due to societal and employers' prejudices,” it said.
The report further said that 93 per cent of the gap in earnings of males and females is due to discrimination.
“Rural self-employed males earn twice of what females earn in rural areas. Male casual workers earn Rs 3,000 per month more than females, 96 per cent of which is attributed to discrimination,” it said.
As high as 91.1 per cent of the gap in earnings between males and females is explained by discrimination.
The academically recognised statistical model applied in the report is now able to quantify the discrimination women face in the labour market. The lower wages for salaried women are due to 67 per cent of discrimination and 33 per cent due to lack of education and work experience, the report said.
Oxfam India called on the government to actively enforce effective measures for the protection and right to equal wages and work for all women. The Government of India should also incentivise the participation of women in workforce, including enhancement in pay, upskilling, job reservations and easy return-to-work options after maternity, the report said.
What the report finds is if a man and woman starts on an equal footing, the woman will be discriminated in the economic sphere where she will lag behind in regular/salaried, casual and self-employment, said Amitabh Behar, CEO of Oxfam India.
"The inequality in the labour market for gender and other social categories, the report finds, is not just due to poor access to education or work experience but because of discrimination," he said.
These findings are based on the government data on employment and labour from 2004-05 to 2019-20.
The Oxfam India report refers to unit level data from 61st round National Sample Survey (NSS) data on employment-unemployment (2004-05), the Periodic Labour Force Survey in 2018-19 and 2019-20 and All India Debt and Investment Survey by the government.

In a bid to increase gender equality in the workplace, Japanese women are now engaging in the #KuToo movement. The protest is against what they say is a de facto requirement for female staff to wear high heels at work. Started by actress Yumi Ishikawa, the movement has garnered massive support online and a petition has already been submitted to the government. #Kutoo is a play on the Japanese word Kutsu meaning shoes.
