The Congress claimed on Friday that the Centre and the Bihar government have not fulfilled their promise of cleaning the Ganga and said in the last 11 years, the exercise of ridding the river of pollutants has become just an "election jumla".
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh claimed that not only in Bihar, "Mother Ganga" has become more polluted than ever before throughput its stretch.
"Most of the schemes launched in the name of Ganga cleanliness campaign have proved to be a black hole of corruption. After the foundation-stone laying, inauguration and heavy publicity, neither any work is visible nor any concrete result," he alleged in post in Hindi on X.
Ramesh's attack came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in line with his commitment to the conservation and rejuvenation of the Ganga, inaugurated six sewage treatment plants (STPs) under the Namami Gange project, worth over Rs 1,800 crore.
Ramesh said, "The advertisement-loving prime minister is once again on a tour of Bihar. No matter how many fake announcements the prime minister makes, no matter how many ribbons he cuts for free advertising, the truth is that the double-engine government in Bihar has completely failed to meet the expectations of the common people." The Congress leader claimed that oppression against the deprived classes is at its peak in Bihar, the law-and-order situation is extremely bad, criminals have become unbridled and the common citizens are helpless.
Everyday, there are reports of killings, robberies and violence against women, he claimed.
There is no employment opportunity for youngsters in the state and they are forced to migrate from Bihar, the former Union minister said.
"During this visit, the prime minister will also express his electoral concern about the pollution of Mother Ganga. But the truth is that in the last 11 years, 'Ganga cleaning' has become just an election jumla, which is suddenly remembered before every poll," he added.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) itself is exposing the terrible condition of Ganga pollution in Bihar, Ramesh said.
The Congress accused the BJP-led Centre and the JD(U)-BJP government in Bihar of not fulfilling their promise of purifying the Ganga and claimed that the condition of the river is such that its water is neither drinkable nor suitable for bathing.
Addressing a press conference, party MP Manoj Kumar cited a report to claim that of the 13 STPs built for the Ganga and its tributaries in Bihar, only seven are working.
He said the promise made to purify the Ganga water under the "Namami Gange" project has turned out to be false.
"Narendra Modi and (Bihar Chief Minister) Nitish Kumar together neither took any step towards flood control nor made the Ganga water drinkable. Even the NGT imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the Bihar government," he claimed.
Kumar said due to the high amount of faecal coliform (FC) bacteria, the NGT has stated that the river's water is neither fit for drinking nor for bathing.

A 5-year-old boy died after his family dipped him in the waters of Ganga in Haridwar believing it would cure his cancer.&nbsp;
According to the police, the boy was undergoing treatment for blood cancer in Delhi and his family had taken him to Haridwar as last hope.&nbsp;
NDTV reported that a video of the incident shows the boys' parents praying while another woman, believed to be his aunt, pushed him underwater.&nbsp;
A few bystanders asked the family to stop after realising that the 5-year-old had been in the water for too long. When the family refused, they forcefully pulled him out. The boy was immediately taken to the hospital but he was declared dead.&nbsp;

Officials said that 435 mm of rainfall was recorded in Rishikesh on the night of August 13. Heavy rains have also inundated various low-lying areas in Rishikesh while the rural areas have been flooded with the State Disaster Response Force evacuating people to a safer place.
Alaknanda, Mandakini and Ganga rivers were flowing above the danger level at Rudraprayag, Shrinagar and Devprayag, the disaster control room said.&nbsp;
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for rain for Monday in six districts of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Champawat and issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in Haridwar.
A defence training academy on the outskirts of Dehradun collapsed on Monday as torrential rains pounded the state, while five people were missing after a series of landslides, including along the national highways to Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri shrines, officials said.
Located on the banks of Song river near Lalpul, the building of the Dehradun Defence Academy caved in on Monday morning, Tehri Sub Divisional Magistrate Ashish Ghildiyal said.
No one was injured as the building had been vacated in advance, he said.
It is a private institution whose building was constructed 15 years ago, former Zilla panchayat member Akhilesh Uniyal said.

A government-mandated study has found no traces of novel coronavirus in Ganga waters after dead bodied were fished out from the river in some districts of UP and Bihar during the peak of the second wave, PTI has reported quoting sources.
The study was conducted by the National Mission for Clean Ganga under the Jal Shakti Ministry in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
The study was conducted in two phases with the samples being taken from Kannauj, Unnao, Kanpur, Hamirpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Balia, Buxar, Ghazipur, Patna and Chhapra.
&ldquo;None of the samples collected had traces of SARS-CoV2,&rdquo; official sources told PTI.
The virological study extracted the RNA of the viruses from the water samples to conduct an RT-PCR test to determine the viral load in the water body.
There were fears that bodies, possibly of Covid victims, floating in the Ganga might have infected the water.

The nationwide lockdown, imposed to tackle Covid-19, led to a 50% reduction in the chemical concentration of the river Ganga, a new study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur has found. The impact of restricted anthropogenic activities was studies at Prayagraj from 25th of March till 13th of May. The daily geochemical record of the river was anaylsed and the researchers concluded that due to a reduction in industrial discharge, there was a decrease in heavy metal concentrations by atleast 50%. They noted that a reduction in industrial wastewater can reduce heavy metal pollution in Ganga considerably, in a span of a few months. The study also revealed that Uttar Pradesh alone contributes nearly 54% of total industrial wastewater generation in the Ganga which is equal to 269 million litres a day.

A 'My Ganga My Dolphin' campaign has been launched by the&nbsp;National Mission for Clean Ganga, the Wildlife Institute of India and the Forest Department to mark&nbsp;Ganga River Dolphin Day.&nbsp;
As a part of this, dolphin safaris have been launched at six sites along the banks of river Ganga&nbsp;in&nbsp;Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.&nbsp;
The Ganga Praharis in all the sites have been trained in biodiversity-based eco-tourism and will take the tourists on boat rides to view Dolphin and explore the biodiversity of the holy river.&nbsp;
Announcing the initiative via video conference, the Jal&nbsp;Shakti&nbsp;Minister&nbsp;congratulated the nation and informed that the population of Gangetic Dolphins has increased in recent years.
