Days after the Congress party's top decision-making body reaffirmed faith in the Gandhi family despite humiliating defeats in the recent elections, a group of Congress leaders held a meeting.
Many of the leaders who met at Ghulam Nabi Azad's house in Delhi reportedly belonged to the group informally called 'G23'. In 2020, they had written to Sonia Gandhi seeking sweeping changes in the party's organisation and functioning.
After their latest meeting, the Congress leaders issued a short statement. It spoke about the "demoralising outcome" in the recent polls, and the "constant exodus" of leaders and workers. The leaders said, "We believe that the only way forward is for the Congress to adopt the model of collective and inclusive leadership and decision-making at all levels."
The leaders also called for discussions with other "like-minded forces to create a platform to pave the way for a credible alternative for 2024". The statement ended with the pregnant phrase - "the next steps in this regard will be announced soon".
The statement bore the names of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Kapil Sibal, Prithviraj Chavan, Manish Tewari, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Raj Babbar, Shankar Singh Vaghela, Manishankar Aiyer, Shashi Tharoor, PJ Kurian, MA Khan, Rajender Kaur Bhattal, Sandeep Dixit, Kuldeep Sharma, Vivek Tankha, and Preneet Kaur.
Days earlier, at the Congress Working Committee, or CWC meet, Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi had reportedly offered to step down, but were persuaded not to do so.

Captain points to difference in Hathras & Hoshiarpur, defends Gandhis

Dubbing their remarks as &lsquo;political puffery&rsquo; with no substance or basis to support their criticism,&nbsp;Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday hit out at BJP leaders Nirmala Sitharaman and Prakash Javadekar for their comments over the Hoshiarpur rape-murder case. Defending Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, Captain said&nbsp;pointed out that in the&nbsp;Hathras&nbsp;case, the Uttar Pradesh government and police &ldquo;did not only fail&rdquo; to initiate stern action but in fact was seemingly &ldquo;trying to cover up&rdquo; the matter to benefit the upper-caste accused.&nbsp;This, he said, was in sharp contrast to the prompt action taken by the Punjab Police, who immediately arrested the accused and is now preparing to file the challan within a week.&nbsp;The BJP attacked the Congress on Saturday over alleged rape and killing of a six-year-old girl in Hoshiarpur, as it asked&nbsp;Gandhi duo&nbsp;why had they not paid a visit to the family of the victim yet.&nbsp;The CM, in a statement, said he himself had directed the director general of police to ensure that the case is fast-tracked by the courts to ensure strict and exemplary action for the accused.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The rape and murder of a six-year-old Dalit girl in Congress-ruled Punjab&rsquo;s Hoshiarpur has given BJP fresh ammunition to target the Gandhi family. Union minister Nirmala Sithraman has questioned Rahul Gandhi&rsquo;s silence on the incident. She took a jibe asking why is Rahul Gandhi not going to Hoshiarpur on a &lsquo;picnic&rsquo;, adding incidents of rape should not be politicised.
Referring to Rahul and Priyanka&rsquo;s outrage over Hathras incident, Sitharaman also asked why the Hoshiarpur incident doesn't shake the conscience of the brother and sister who rush to places which can help them politically.
Earlier Union Minister Javadekar also targeted the Gandhis on this issue.

FIR against Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for violating Epidemic Act

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday lodged an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and 153 Congress workers for violating the Epidemic Diseases Act for their attempted march to Hathras to meet the family of the gang-rape victim.
The FIR was lodged under Sections 188 which is disobedience to order promulgated by public servant, Section 269 that is unlawfully or negligently spreading infection of any disease dangerous to life, Section 270 malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life and under section 3 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, said the police.
The Congress earlier on Thursday staged a dramatic protest, leading to the detention of the Gandhis by UP police. The two leaders were detained in Greater Noida, just outside Delhi when they insisted on marching to Hathras. &nbsp;

PM Cares Fund: uproar over Anurag Thakur's remarks on Gandhis

A discussion on the PM Cares fund turned into a heated argument in the Lok Sabha, with exchanges between BJP MPs and the opposition leaders.
As many opposition leaders criticised the PM CARES fund during a discussion on the Taxation Bill, Union Minister Anurag Thakur accused Gandhi family of &lsquo;cheating&rsquo; the people by accumulating public money by creating funds under different names. 
"Nehru ji ordered the creation of Prime Minister&rsquo;s National Relief Fund in 1948 like a royal order but its registration has not been done even till today. How did it get FCRA clearance?, " he said.
Thakur&nbsp;said the Congress was opposing the PM Cares Fund, just for the sake of it, just how they opposed EVMs &amp; then lost many elections.&nbsp;
