Gandhi's Garland: Unsold at UK Auction

An iconic garland worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the 1930 Dandi March was recently unsold in a UK auction. Despite its historical value, it didn’t meet its guide price. This artifact symbolizes the fight against British colonial rule in India.

The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern.

A tinselled garland presented to and worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the iconic Dandi March of the Indian freedom struggle in 1930 remains open for bids after it failed to meet its GBP 20-30,000 guide price estimate at a UK auction this week.
The garland, in folded paper wrappers inscribed in Gujarati, is said to have been presented as the Salt March passed near the Ahmedabad home of Gandhi&rsquo;s personal physician Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga and was offered by his wife, Nanduben Kanuga. It came up for auction as part of an &lsquo;Islamic and Indian Art&rsquo; sale by Lyon &amp; Turnbull in London on Wednesday.
&ldquo;I am very surprised that the &lsquo;Gandhi Garland&rsquo; did not find a home on the day of the auction,&rdquo; said Kristina Sanne, Head of Sale at the auction house specialising in fine arts and antiques.
&ldquo;That said, we have had quite a lot of interest since the sale and hope to sell it to the highest bidder. It deserves a great home,&rdquo; she said.
The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern. It is edged with gold tinsel, with four smaller rectangular medallions and two triangular medallions similarly decorated and all connected with gold threads to form a necklace.
It passed on through descent from the collection of the late Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga, who along with his wife spent extensive periods at Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s Sabarmati Ashram as fellow satyagrahis. An amateur photograph of Gandhi being presented with the garland is inscribed on the reserve to read: &ldquo;Gandhiji Nanduben Kanuga. On the day of Dandi March. At Bungalow 12th March 1930&rdquo;.
The literature with the auction lot states: &ldquo;This garland was presented to Gandhi to mark an auspicious beginning to the Salt March, a major non-violent protest in India in March-April 1930. The Salt March was one of the most successful campaigns in Gandhi&rsquo;s struggle against British rule in India to win equal rights and freedom for Indians.
&ldquo;Starting at his ashram (religious retreat) at Sabarmati (near Ahmedabad), the march reached Dandi after a journey of some 240 miles. On the morning of April 6, Gandhi and his followers picked up handfuls of salt from along the seashore. In so doing, they technically &lsquo;produced&rsquo; salt and broke the law.&rdquo;
A photograph accompanying the garland shows Nanduben Kanuga placing the garland around Gandhi&rsquo;s neck and it is said to have been subsequently returned to the Kanugas after the march.
&ldquo;A few weeks later, Dr Kanuga further contributed to the cause by paying 1600 Rupees for the grains of salt that Gandhi had made at Dandi,&rdquo; reads the footnote.
While the garland remained unsold, the auction attracted fierce bidding for its other highlight lots with a very fine illustration from a Bhagavata Purana series from Punjab going under the hammer for GBP 27,700 - overshooting its estimate of GBP 15-20,000. A group of six Rajput Equestrian Portraits from Rajasthan exceeded their estimate to fetch GBP 20,160 and an album of Kalighat Paintings sold for GBP 21,420.
&ldquo;The Indian Art section saw frantic bidding throughout and was over 90 per cent sold. A real testament to the buoyancy of the Indian Art market,&rdquo; said Sanne.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there are some sections which even raised objections to the names of government schemes. He said that some even took issue with the inclusion of Sanskrit words in the scheme names.
Citing an unverified news report, PM Modi said that 600 government schemes had been named after members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
He also cited instances of Opposition leaders objecting to exclusion of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the ruling party's speeches. PM said that if there was an oversight, it would be fixed by the BJP.
He escalated the attack by asking why Congress leaders did not use the Nehru surname even though it belonged to an eminent personality.

A museum dedicated to the life and message of Mahatma Gandhi has opened in the Atlantic City of the United States.
Inaugurated this past weekend, the museum has artefacts and digital display screens that are interactive and visitors will be able to interactively see the life events of the apostle of peace.

Developed in partnership with the Aditya Birla Group by the New Jersey-based Gandhian Society, it is the first museum dedicated to the "father of the nation" in the USA.

Outraged over the installation of a Mahishasur idol that resembled Mahatma Gandhi at a pandal in southwest Kolkata, people on social media sought immediate arrest of Hindu Mahasabha leaders who organised the Durga puja.
Organisers Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, however, claimed that it was a "coincidence" that the Mahishasur idol, which had a bald head and was dressed in a white dhoti and round glasses, bore resemblance to Gandhi, but social media was not convinced.
"Immediately arrest the officials of Hindu Mahasabha for depicting Mahatma Gandhi as asura in a Durga Puja at Kolkata," tweeted one Atanu Chakravarty, tagging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
As the photos of the Durga Puja pandal went viral on social media, the Kolkata Police told the Mahasabha to change the look of the idol and also asked journalist Indradeep Bhattacharyya, who shared it on Twitter, to delete the photograph as it "may create tension" amid the festival.
"The Hindu Mahasabha claimed to have changed the idol on Kolkata Police's request and 'put moustache and hair' on it. What an easy solution found by KP," tweeted Ujjaini.
Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena alleged that this was a "deliberate attempt" to demonise freedom fighters.
"Nope, this isn't coincidence. This is a deliberate attempt to change the narrative to suit the current narrative of demonising our freedom movement heroes. We have truly lost our moral compass as a nation," Chaturvedi tweeted.
One Partha Pratim Bhattacharya on Facebook urged the police to take action against the organisers of the Durga Puja as the idol "has hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus like me".
"I don't have an inkling as to what steps the law enforcement people are taking to curb this nuisance. It's a shame for us, Indians and Bengalis is particular," Kumar Mukherjee posted on Facebook.
"It's such a disgrace to my city!" posted Dwaipayan Banerjee.
According to mythology, Goddess Durga slew Mahishasur in an epic battle to end his evil reign.
Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha state working president Chandrachur Goswami told PTI that the organisation didn't want to hurt anybody's sentiments.
"The Durga idol that was worshipped here initially had a Mahisasur whose face looked similar to that of Mahatma Gandhi. The similarities are just a coincidence. After photos of it went viral, a police team visited the pandal and asked us to make changes to the face," he said.

The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi refused the candidacy saying that the position should be offered to someone who is able to create a sense of unity among the Opposition and also generate a national consensus.  
In a statement Gandhi said, 'Several esteemed leaders of the Opposition have done him the honour of thinking of him for the opposition's candidature in the upcoming elections for the presidency.
'I am most grateful to them. But having considered the matter deeply I see that the Opposition's candidate should be one who will generate a national consensus and a national atmosphere besides Opposition unity. I feel there will be others who will do this far better than I,' he said.
'And so I have requested the leaders to give the opportunity to such a person. May India get a President worthy of the office presaged by Rajaji as the last Governor General and inaugurated by Dr Rajendra Prasad as our first President,' Gandhi said. The 77-year-old former bureaucrat has also served as India's High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Previously, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah were offered the presidential candidacy. However, they both refused the offer.
