Coal Shortage: Supply concerns will be eased this week assures Coal Minister

Coal Minister says supply being raised to power plants across the country. Directs availability to Delhi warns discoms of action if load shedding undertaken 'unnecessarily'.

Coal shortage: The daily average coal requirement at the power plants is about 18.5 Lakh tonnes of coal per day whereas the daily coal supply has been around 17.5 lakh tonnes per day.

Coal shortage: The government has moved into damage control as worries of blackouts and load shedding grab headline. The coal ministry&nbsp; issued a statement assuring that distribution and not the actual availability of coal was the problem that was getting resolved. The ministry stated "any fear of disruption in power supply is entirely misplaced".

As per the statement,"The present coal supply&nbsp;to <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/panic-over-blackouts-unnecessary-power-minister-on-outage-fears-1633860533755" target="_blank">power sector</a> is more than 14 lakh tonnes per day and with the receding rains, this supply has already increased to 15 lakh tonnes and is set to increase to more than 16 lakh tonnes per day by the end of October 2021".&nbsp; As <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/delhi-could-face-power-crisis-kerjiwal-seeks-pm-s-personal-intervention-1633783418849" target="_blank">Delhi Chief Minister Arvind&nbsp;Kejriwal</a>&nbsp;continues to allege that the centre is witholding&nbsp;supply, the Coal Ministry retorted that&nbsp;Delhi will get as much as power as requisitioned by them as per their demand. To meet Delhi's growing demand the Ministry has directed NTPC&nbsp;and GAIL to give full availability. The minister however warned that if any discom is found to resort to load shedding despite being power available, action would be initiated against them.

A panic created about coal shortage is due to miscommunication from GAIL and Tata, the minister said amid huge concern about power supply in more than six states, including national capital Delhi.
The panic, Singh said, was "unnecessarily created" after officials from GAIL sent a message to distributors on the supply to be affected.
Singh warned GAIL and Tata Power against &lsquo;acts of irresponsible behaviour&rsquo; that created panic and added that the country has reserves for another 4-5 days
He assured &lsquo;under no circumstances the gas supply will come down&rsquo;. He further added that &lsquo;the supply of domestic or imported coal will continue irrespective of the charges and &lsquo;Delhi will continue to get supply and there will be no load shedding&rsquo;.
Several states including Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi and Tamil Nadu have flagged shortage of coal at power plants. &nbsp;Meanwhile, Punjab has already imposed rotational load shedding at several places.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warning that the national capital "could face a blackout" in the next two days if supplies did not improve.

Sensex ends 162 points in green, Nifty at 11,937

After a highly volatile session influenced by the European markets, Indian equity benchmarks ended in the green on Wednesday.
The Sensex&nbsp;ended 162 points up at 40,707 and the Nifty closed at 11,937, 0.34% higher.
Powergrid, Bharti&nbsp;Airtel, Tata&nbsp;Steel, Hindalco and GAIL were the top five Nifty gainers.
The rupee depreciated 9 paise to settle at 73.58 against the US dollar.

Markets open in red; Nifty trades around 11,260

Indian equity markets plunged in the opening session on Wednesday led by metal and banking stocks.&nbsp;
At 9:25 am, the Sensex was 163 points in the red at 38,201 and the Nifty fell0.51% to trade at 11,260.
Hindalco, ONGC, GAIL, UPL and Tata&nbsp;Steel were the top Nifty losers.
Domestic equities also followed a heavy fall in the US markets with Nasdaq&nbsp;closing over 4% down in the Tuesday trade. Most Asian bourses were also in the red.
