G20 Summit: 6.75 lakh pots of flowering plants, foliage to adorn Delhi roads

The much-awaited summit is scheduled for next month and will take place on September 9 and 10.&nbsp;

As many as 6.75 lakh pots of flowering plants and foliage will adorn the 61 roads and venues of Delhi during the G20 Summit, Raj Niwas officials said on Sunday.
The major locations that have been beautified with potted plants include Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Dhaula Kuan-IGI Airport Road, Palam Technical Area, India Gate C-Hexagon, Mandi House, Akbar Road roundabout, Delhi Gate, Rajghat, and ITPO among others, they added.
After a preparatory meeting headed by Lt Governor V K Saxena, directions were issued identifying agencies who would undertake this drive and they were tasked with procuring a specific number of plants/pots, preferably from their own nurseries, officials said.
"This resulted in seamless coordination between five departments/agencies undertaking the procurement and placement of these potted plants with the LG personally monitoring the progress of work and inspecting different corridors in the last couple of months," said an official.
While the Forest Department and the Delhi Parks and Garden Society placed 3.75 lakh plants (1.25 lakh foliage and 2.5 lakh flowering), the PWD placed 50,000 (35,000 foliage and 15,000 flowering), the DDA 1 lakh (85,000 foliage and 15,000 flowering), the NDMC 1 lakh and the MCD 50,000 pots, the official added.
While 4.05 lakh potted foliage have already been placed along the 61 roads, the remaining potted flowering plants will be put up in the first week of September so that the plants are in full bloom during the duration of the G20 Summit, officials said.&nbsp;

Gurugram police have arrested one person in connection with a case related to the theft of flower pots set up for the G20 event, police said on Wednesday.
Earlier a video had earlier gone viral on social media, which showed two people purportedly stealing the flower pots kept on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway.
The accused has been identified as a 50-year-old Manmohan, a resident of Gurugram.
"Police have seized the stolen flower pots and the car used in the theft," said Gurugram police.
Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, Joint CEO, SK Chahal has taken cognizance of the situation.
"It has come to our cognizance and action will be taken against them," SK Chahal said.
The incident took place on Monday in front of the Ambience mall on the DelhiGurugram expressway and the men in the video can be seen putting the flower pots in the SUV. Further details are awaited.
India is holding the Presidency of G20 for one year, till November 30, 2023. The forum will bring together the G20 member countries, guest countries, and international organisations invited by India. A video of two men allegedly stealing flowerpots kept for the G-20 summit near the Delhi-Gurugram border is going viral.
The clip shows the men lifting flowerpots and keeping them inside Kia Carnival, which is a high-end car.

The RBI on Tuesday said travellers from G-20 countries arriving at Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi international airports can get Prepaid Payment Instruments wallets linked to UPI for making payments to over five crore merchant outlets across India.
Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank made an announcement regarding allowing access to UPI to foreign nationals and NRIs visiting India.
To start with, the RBI said, the facility is available to travellers from G-20 countries, at select international airports (Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi).
Eligible travellers would be issued Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) wallets linked to UPI for making payments at merchant outlets.
"Delegates from G20 countries can also avail of this facility at various meeting venues," the RBI said.
Initially, ICICI Bank, IDFC First Bank and two non-bank PPI issuers, Pine Labs Private Limited and Transcorp International Limited will issue UPI-linked wallets.
"Travellers visiting India can now experience the convenience of UPI payments at over five crore merchant outlets across India, that accept QR Code-based UPI payments," the RBI said.
The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world's major developed and developing economies.
It comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union (EU).
Payment transactions through UPI rose 1.3 per cent on-month to a high of nearly Rs 13 lakh crore in January.

After Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), India has now reportedly proposed to hold the G-20 meeting in 2023 in the Union Territory of Ladakh as well. The move might provoke a response from China which has already expressed its displeasure over New Delhi’s plans to host the intergovernmental summit in J&K next year.
India, which will be hosting the 2023 G-20 summit, on June 30 stated it is considering several venues for the meeting and J&K could be one such venue. The same day China echoed close ally Pakistan’s objection to India’s plans and said that relevant sides should avoid "unilateral moves" that may "complicate" the situation. “China's position on the Kashmir issue is consistent and clear-cut. The Kashmir issue, a dispute left from the past, should be peacefully and properly addressed in accordance with the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreement,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a media briefing. This comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and China are at their lowest following a major standoff between the armies of the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) which is yet to be resolved.  
If the proposal materialises, this will be the first international summit to be held in J&K and Ladakh post August 2019 which is when the Centre abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the state provoking strong reaction from both China and Pakistan.
