Congress president Sonia Gandhi in her Independence Day message alleged that a "self-obsessed" government is hell-bent on "trivialising" the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the party will strongly oppose such attempts made for political gains.

Gandhi's attack came a day after BJP released a video narrating its version of events that led to India's partition in 1947 in which it targeted top Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday alleged that a "self-obsessed" government is hell-bent on "trivialising" the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the party will strongly oppose such attempts made for political gains.
Gandhi's attack came a day after the BJP released a video narrating its version of events that led to India's partition in 1947 in which it tangentially accused the top Congress leadership at the time and showed pictures of Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
The Congress had also taken a strong exception to the exclusion of India&rsquo;s first prime minister Nehru in the Karnataka government's newspaper advertisement on freedom fighters and termed the BJP action "pathetic".
"Friends, we have achieved a great deal in the last 75 years, but today's self-obsessed government is bent on trivialising the great sacrifices of our freedom fighters and the glorious achievements of the country, which can never be accepted," Gandhi said in her message on India's 76th Independence Day.
The Congress will strongly oppose any misrepresentation of historical facts and every attempt to put great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Abul Kalam Azad in the dock based on falsehood for "political gains", she said.
Sonia Gandhi said that in the last 75 years, India has left an indelible mark on the international arena in all fields including science, education, health and information technology through the hard work of its talented people.
"Under the leadership of its visionary leaders, while on one hand, India established a free, fair and transparent election system, on the other, it strengthened democracy and constitutional institutions," the Congress chief said.
Along with this, India has made its identity as a leading country that has always lived up to pluralism in language, religion and sect, she added.&nbsp;

Actor Kangana Ranaut's comments on India's freedom have riled up BJP leaders as well. After party MP Varun Gandhi, BJP Delhi spokeperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor has also slammed the actor's comment and demanded action against her.
Kapoor termed Ranaut&rsquo;s statement that what India achieved in 1947 was "bheek but not freedom" as an insult to the freedom fighters&rsquo; sacrifices.
Ranaut&rsquo;s video from Times Now summit went viral on social media with several people strongly criticising what the actor had said. In the clip, she said that what India got in 1947 was &ldquo;bheek&rdquo;. &ldquo;That was not freedom but &lsquo;bheekh&rsquo; (alms), and the freedom came in 2014,&rdquo; she added, supposedly referring to Narendra Modi-led government coming to power.
Kapoor tweeted: &ldquo;Being the son of a freedom fighter and coming from the family of freedom fighters, Kangana Ranaut statement that India&rsquo;s independence was given in bheek, I find it the biggest misuse of freedom (of speech) and an insult to the sacrifice of freedom fighters".

Tara Rani Srivastava
Tara Rani Srivastava, who was born in Saran, Bihar, actively participated with her husband Phulendu Babu in the Quit India Movement. During one of the demonstrations, they managed to gather a crowd outside the Siwan Police station to hoist the Indian flag. Even when Phulendu was shot, Tara Rani bandaged his wounds and continued to march undeterred and with undaunting courage.
Captain Lakshmi Sahgal
Captain Lakshmi Sahgal was born in Madras and shall forever be remembered as an ardent freedom fighter. She was an officer of the Indian National Army (INA) and played a key role in the establishment of a women&rsquo;s regiment known as the Rani of Jhansi Regiment.
Rajkumari Gupta
Rajkumari Gupta was born in Kanpur and went on to work in close association with Chandrashekhar Azad. She played a key role in the Kakori dacoity, as she was the one who helped supply guns, revolvers and even messages.
Matangini Hazra
Matangini Hazra was born in a village named Hogla, near Tamluk in West Bengal. She was an active participant in both the Quit India Movement and the Non-Cooperation Movement. During one of the incidents, she continued to march even after having been shot. The braveheart continued to show undeterred courage and determination through all odds.
All these women and many such more were filled with the hope of freedom and socio-economic emancipation. With no greed for fame or recognition, they continued to fight against the great political odds faced by India during the British Raj. Even after 75 years of Independence, their efforts shall continue to kindle respect and pride in our hearts for years to come. &nbsp;
