The Delhi High Court on Thursday reserved its order on former Indian Assistant Secretary General at the UN, Lakshmi Puri's petition against social media activist Saket Gokhale, over his tweets questioning the sources of her income.
The Delhi High Court lashed out at Gokhale for his defamatory tweets against Lakshmi Puri, pointing out that Gokhale had not approached any authorities before putting out allegations against a former public servant.
Gokhale's tweets had allegedly not only raised questions about Puri and her husband's sources of income, they also referred to her as a "thief" and a "black money hoarder".
Hearing the defamation suit, the High Court asked whether any Tom, Dick or Harry could make any vilifying comment against anyone on the Internet, to damage a person's reputation. The Court said that the right to reputation is a protected fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

A war of words has erupted between the Centre and Twitter, after the social media's statement earlier on the govt's new IT rules and a Delhi police notice.&nbsp;
After Twitter&nbsp;flagged concerns over the "potential threat to freedom of expression" and intimidation tactics by the police, the government, in a scathing statement, told the social media giant to "stop beating around the bush and comply with the laws of the land".
The govt said, law making and policy formulations is the sole prerogative of the sovereign and Twitter is just a social media platform, it has no basis in dictating what should India's legal policy framework should be.
On Twitter raising concerns about&nbsp;the safety&nbsp;of its staff in India, the govt assured&nbsp;that representatives of social media companies including Twitter are and will always remain safe in India and there is no threat to their personal safety and security.
