Ford Motor Co. plans to eliminate over 1300 employees in China, according to local Chinese media.
In 2022, Ford's wholesale sales in China dipped below 500,000 units for the first time in ten years, extending a downward trend that began in 2016 when the US carmaker shipped 1.27 million vehicles and held a 4.6% market share.
This is due to Chinese consumers' growing preference for electric vehicles produced by companies like Tesla Inc. and domestic manufacturers like BYD Co., that share fell to 2.1% last year.
&ldquo;Our costs are not competitive, and we are working internally and with our partners to reduce costs in all areas," a Ford spokeswoman wrote in an email response to Bloomberg News. &ldquo;We can only win through a lean and agile organization. These actions are necessary for us to build a healthier and more sustainable business in China."
As per Bloomberg, the Ford spokesperson didn't provide a timeline or a breakdown of how many jobs would be eliminated.
The Mustang Mach-E is the sole electric vehicle offered by Ford in China.
Meanwhile, earlier this year Ford announced that it would cut 3,800 positions in Europe due to rising costs associated with the switch to electric vehicles. The business, which employs roughly 173,000 people worldwide, has declared that by 2026 it will invest $50 billion in EV production.
&ldquo;China remains a very important market and Ford is committed to developing our business here," the spokeswoman said. &ldquo;We will continue to accelerate our electrification transformation in China. Our new localized EV products are under development now. We are also working with our partners to strengthen our EV business, including expanding the distribution.", as per Bloomberg

US auto giant Ford is planning to axe 3,200 jobs in Germany, union adding that it was extremely concerned about the future of the company's sites in Europe's top economy.
The news came amid fears in the EU that companies could shift their operations to the United States because of the recently passed landmark Inflation Reduction Act that offers tax cuts for US-made electric cars and batteries.
According to AFP, the cuts will be mainly in Cologne, where Ford has a major plant, but all sites across Germany are threatened.
Ford's German workers can continue to develop successful electric models for Europe if given the chance, the union said.
But the US company risks "taking the axe to its own future" with the planned cuts, urging the carmaker to reconsider the move.

Tata Motors' EV subsidiary has inked a pact to acquire Ford India's Sanand-based manufacturing plant for Rs 725.7 crore.
As part of the deal, Tata Motors will get entire land and buildings, vehicle manufacturing plant along with machinery and equipment situated therein, the Mumbai-based auto major said in a statement.
The deal also includes transfer of all eligible employees, it added.
FIPL will continue to operate its power train manufacturing facility by leasing back the land and buildings of the power train manufacturing plant from TPEML on mutually agreed terms, Tata Motors said.
TPEML has agreed to offer employment to eligible employees of the plant in the event of FIPL's cessation of such operations, it added.
The government of Gujarat, TPEML and FIPL have already executed a tripartite MoU on May 30, 2022 to support all relevant approvals for the above transaction.
Tata Motors said with its manufacturing capacity nearing saturation, the acquisition is timely and a win-win for all stakeholders.
The Sanand plant has a manufacturing capacity of 3 lakh units per annum which is scalable to 4.2 lakh units per annum.
TPEML will make the necessary investments to reconfigure the plant to adapt to Tata Motors' existing and future vehicle platforms, the automaker said.
The unit is adjacent to the existing manufacturing facility of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited at Sanand, which should help in a smooth transition, it added.
“The agreement with FIPL signed today is beneficial to all stakeholders and reflects Tata Motors strong aspiration to further strengthen its market position in the passenger vehicles segment and to continue to build on its leadership position in the electric vehicle segment," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles MD Shailesh Chandra noted.
Ford Motor Company Transformation Officer Steve Armstrong said the  announcement marks an important step forward in the company's ongoing business restructuring in India.
The company in September last year had announced that it would stop vehicle production at its two plants in the country as part of a restructuring exercise.
Both TPEML and FIPL will work together over the next few months to satisfy all the condition precedents and obtain the required regulatory approvals for the closure of the transaction, Tata Motors said.

Ford has launched the new Endeavour Sport in India today priced at&nbsp; ₹ 35.10 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi) and it will be offered only in the range-topping Titanium 4x4 variant.
