In December, the cost of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals decreased by 3% and 5%, respectively, attributed to a drop in onion and tomato prices, as reported by Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics (MI&amp;A) Research.
The decline in thali prices was driven by a 14% reduction in onion prices and a 3% drop in tomato prices, marking the conclusion of the festive season, the report highlighted. Specifically, the cost of non-vegetarian meals saw a faster decline due to a 5-7% decrease in broiler prices, which account for half of the total expenses.

These estimations consider ingredient prices across various regions in India, encompassing cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil, and cooking gas, offering insights into the cost dynamics.
Year-on-year, there was a 12% rise in the cost of a vegetarian thali, largely propelled by significant increases of 82% and 42% in onion and tomato prices, respectively. Additionally, pulses, constituting 9% of the veg thali cost, surged by 24% in price.
Conversely, non-vegetarian meal expenses saw a 4% decline year-on-year, primarily due to a 15% decrease in broiler prices amid increased production, the report noted.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has listed all the measures undertaken by the government to tame inflation while speaking in the Lok Sabha in a debate on the no-confidence motion brought by the Opposition against the current regime.&nbsp;
Sitharaman also said that India remains in a "rare position of being optimistic" about its future growth prospects even when the global economy is undergoing a period of gloomy growth and elevated inflation. To curb the inflation, she said steps are being taken to improve the supplies of essential commodities like pulses, tomato and onion.
<h2>Measures to curb inflation</h2>
Finance Minister highlighted that Tur dal that is imported from Mozambique are on the way and about 3,00,000 tonnes of urad would be bought from Myanmar. Aggressive disbursal measures are being taken to release the moong dal stocks into the market. Procurement of imported masoor dal will be added to the reserves. She also added that about 3,00,000 tonnes of onion procurement has been completed.&nbsp;

To tackle the surge in Tomato prices, India has also lifted the import curb that was imposed on Nepal tomatoes and the first consignment is expected to reach Varanasi, Lucknow and Kanpur by Friday. Apart from this the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Limited (NCCF) will be spearheading the sale of tomatoes at a subsidized price of Rs 70/Kg this upcoming weekend in the Delhi-NCR region.
The wholesale price in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh has already come down below Rs 100/Kg which will &nbsp;help cool prices further, she added.

Economists have anticipated a significant surge in retail inflation for the month of July due to soaring food prices, estimating it to reach 6.7%, marking a substantial increase of 190 basis points compared to the previous month's figures.
The forecast, made by Deutsche Bank India economists led by chief economist Kaushik Das, has sparked concerns about the impact on consumers and the broader economy.
The July Consumer Price Index (CPI) is projected to rise to 6.7% on a year-on-year basis, up from 4.8% in June. This surge is predominantly attributed to the exponential rise in food prices, particularly tomatoes, onions, and rice.
The average daily prices of essential food items shot up by 12.3% on-month in July, a stark contrast to the 2.4% increase witnessed in June. Prices of tomatoes experienced an astonishing hike of 236.1%, compared to a mere 38% rise in June, while onion prices rose by 15.8% as opposed to 4.2% in the previous month. Potatoes also saw a notable increase of 9.3% in July, in comparison to a 5.7% rise in June.
The surge in prices for these key vegetables has contributed to an overall increase of 87.1% in July, significantly surpassing the 16% rise seen in June. This has prompted economists to project a headline CPI inflation increase of 2.3% on-month for July, resulting in an overall inflation rate of 6.7%.
The report suggests that this inflationary pressure is likely to persist until at least August. While there is a potential easing of tomato prices in September, concerns remain about other essential items, particularly cereals like rice, which witnessed steep price hikes in August and September of the previous year.
The Reserve Bank of India, in its upcoming monetary policy review on August 10, is expected to maintain its current interest rates unchanged despite this inflationary scenario. This is the fourth consecutive time the bank has decided to leave the rates untouched, with the last rate hike recorded in December 2022.
In light of these projections, consumers and policymakers are advised to brace for potential economic challenges stemming from rising food prices, which could have far-reaching implications on household budgets and overall economic stability.
