Former India captain PR Sreejesh says the FIH Pro League exposed key areas for improvement ahead of the Asian Games and World Cup.

Former India captain and goalkeeping stalwart P R Sreejesh believes the just-concluded FIH Pro League was a good wake-up call for the men's national hockey team ahead of next year's Asian Games and the World Cup.
India struggled in the European leg of the Pro League and finished eighth out of nine teams to avoid relegation by a whisker.
But Sreejesh, who was part of India's bronze medal winning sides in Tokyo and Paris Olympics, felt that players didn't perform too badly but unfortunately results didn't favour the team.
"I think the players performed really well, we created lot of opportunities. We gave very good fight on the field but sometimes it happens the result went against us," Sreejesh said on the sidelines of the launch of Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon on Wednesday night.
"The preparation was perfect but unfortunately the result was not perfect for us but the coaches have enough time to prepare the team for the Asia Cup and definitely next year the Asian Games and World Cup is there.
"I think this Pro League gave us a very good wake-up call to prepare and to be on our toes to prepare for World Cup and Asian Games," he added.
The Asian Games will be hosted by Aichi-Nagoya in Japan from September 19 to October 4, while the World Cup will be jointly organised by the Netherlands and Belgium from August 15 to 30.
Post retirement after Paris Games, Sreejesh is now the coach of Indian men's junior hockey team and he is enjoying his current journey.
"Same routine, when you wake up early in the morning it's about preparing the players, ensure they are doing their best and rest of the day prepare for the next session, analysing the players.
"The only thing is that I am stressing my mind more now, earlier I used to stress my physical part but now it's about my mental part. But I am enjoying," he said.
India is set to host the FIH Junior World Cup in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 till December 10 this year, and Sreejesh is not leaving no stone unturned to prepare his players.
"For them (players) the biggest challenge is Junior World Cup because four-nation tournaments and stuffs like that are not going to throw enough pressure on them as the Junior World Cup. My duty is to share my experience with them, how to prepare for a big tournament, big matches," he said.
"I faced enough pressure being a player and now being a coach I think it is upto me to take that pressure from the players . I am helping them to be realistic. Being a coach sharing experience as a player is more important." India are clubbed along side Pakistan, Chile and Switzerland in Pool B at the Junior World Cup.
Even though uncertainty looms large over Pakistan's participation in the Junior World Cup owing to tensions between the two countries following Operation Sindoor, Sreejesh doesn't want to focus on one particular team.
"We are in the same pool (India and Pakistan) but I don't want my players to think about one particular team," he said.
"Any tournament starts from the quarterfinals, the main moto is to gather as much points as you can to ensure your place in the quarterfinals and from there the main tournament starts."

The defeat meant India ended at the bottom of the nine-team standings with 10 points from 16 matches.
After finishing last, the Indian team has been relegated to the FIH Nations Cup, the second tier tournament of the game's global governing body.
India took the lead through Sunelita Toppa (9th minute) and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (38th) found the net from a set piece. However, Zhang Ying (19th, 39th) converted two penalty corners, and then Xu Wenyu scored from another set piece to hand China the win.
It was a sloppy start from both sides. China earned the first real chance of the match, but Chen Yang shot wide.

India committed a rare defensive lapse when Manisha Chauhan's clearance hit the head of a Chinese forward and the onfield referee gave a penalty stroke against India.
India opted for referral and the video referee reversed the decision and gave a penalty corner instead of a stroke as the foul was unintentional.
But this time the Indian defence came short as Ying struck with a perfect dragflick to level the scores.
China had another penalty corner 30 seconds from half time, and Ying slammed the ball into the left top corner of the Indian goal to take a 2-1 lead.
In the 37th minute, Neha's effort was saved brilliantly by an alert Chinese goalkeeper but the Indians got back-to-back penalty corners and Rutuja scored from a fine variation after being assisted by Navneet Kaur to level the scores at 2-2.
The Indians went all out thereafter and earned another penalty corner in the 40th minute, but China's first rusher defended well.
After that, it was all China as they secured a penalty corner in the 48th minute, but India survived despite scrappy defending.
China earned two more penalty corners in the 50th minute but wasted the chances.
However, the relentless Chinese secured another penalty corner in the 53rd minute and Zhang's flick was beautifully deflected in by Xu for the winner.

In their fourth shootout of the season, India failed to score a goal while Australia struck all three as Johan Durst enjoyed a memorable night at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium.

In search of an equaliser after trailing 1-2, Australia launched into a wave of attacks, but the Indian defence was equal to the task, with veteran goalkeeper S Sreejesh pulling off a brilliant save with a few minutes left for the final hooter.
However, Tom found Australia's much-needed equaliser with a field goal to send the match into the shootout, where India came a cropper.
The home team failed to convert a single penalty, while Australia scored all three, earning a bonus point for the win.
Australia had won all five of their matches in the Odisha leg of the league so far.
The Indians had squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-6 to the Kookaburras earlier this month in Bhubaneswar.

The win gave the Netherlands two points, while India pocketed one point.
India applied early pressure on the Dutch with some threatening circle penetrations but failed to yield any positive results.

The final quarter was a hard fourth battle between the two sides as they penetrated each other's circles several times but the final touch eluded them.

Sreejesh made one save in the shootout, while Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Abhishek and Raj Kumar Pal converted their chances to help India bag a bonus point.
Jarmanpreet Singh (1st minute) and Abhishek (35th) scored a goal each for India, while Jose Basterra (3rd) and Borja Lacalle (15th) were on the scoresheet for Spain in regulation time.
India started the game on aggressive note as Jarmanpreet Singh scored an excellent field goal in the first minute from an acute angle.
Spain responded well after going down and started playing a fast counter-attack game, which helped them earn a PC. Spain equalized as Jose Basterra found the back of the net.

The regulation period ended in a 1-1 stalemate with India scoring in the 19th minute through young drag-flicker Deepika Kumari and the US equalising through Ashley Seesa in the 45th minute.
Mumtaz Khan and Sonika were on target in the shootout, while Leah Crouse scored for the losing team.
Despite the win, the Indian chief coach, Janneke Schopman, would be unhappy with the way the Savita Punia-led side dominated for most part and still could not win the contest in regulation time despite earning several penalty corners.

A few minutes later Jane Claxton took a shot at goal but it went on to hit the goalpost. The first quarter was plenty of action but ended without any goals being scored.
The second quarter started with India being awarded a penalty corner early on but it wasn&rsquo;t converted. The Aussies won their second penalty corner in the 20th minute but failed to convert it.
Both the teams made plenty of circle entries but the first-half ended goalless.
India brought a whole new level of intensity to their game in the third quarter and were justly rewarded with a goal as they broke the deadlock courtesy a stunning goal from Katariya who dived to put the ball into the back of the net off a penalty corner.

India continued to play a tight defence.
The Australians were awarded a penalty corner with just over a minute left to try and take the game into a penalty shootout but India successfully reviewed the decision to have it overturned.
Another penalty corner was awarded to Australia with just about half a minute left but it was a botched attempt as India went on to win their second game of the tournament.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh's brace went in vain as the Indian men's hockey team conceded three goals in the final quarter to lose 4-6 to Australia in a FIH Pro League match on Thursday.
It was Australia who started and finished the match in style with the Indians dominating in the middle period.
Harmanpreet (12th, 20th minutes) converted two penalty corners, while Sukhjeet Singh (18th) and Mandeep Singh (29th) were the other goal-getters for India.
Blake Govers struck twice for Australia in the second minute besides Aran Zalewski (40th), Lachlan Sharp (52nd), Jacon Anderson (55th) and Jack Welch (58th). The Kookaburras took India for a surprise at the start of the match with Govers handing the visitors a 2-0 lead in the second minute.
He first scored from Australia's first penalty corner past India custodian Krishan Bahadur Pathak and then doubled his side's lead with an unstoppable shot past the goalkeeper.
It was full press from the Kookaburras in the first 10 minutes as they secured another penalty corner soon but the Indians defended stoutly.
It was relentless pressure from Australia and it took a save from Pathak to deny Welch from a penalty corner.
In the 12th minute, India secured their first penalty corner and Harmanpreet made no mistake, firing in with a rocket flick which Australia goalkeeper Andrew Charter had no answer to.
India grew in confidence with the goal and started to dominate the proceedings and minutes later Abhishek's shot from Sukhjeet's feed was saved by Charter.
The hosts continued their attacking game and secured their second penalty corner soon but it was wasted.
Sukhjeet levelled the scores for India in the 18th minute, putting in a wobbly ball from Abhishek.
Two minutes later, Harmanpreet gave India the lead by converting another penalty corner and then a minute from half-time Mandeep scored with a bullet shot from the top of the D after receiving a defence splitting 45-degree ball from his skipper.
Trailing by two goals, Australia pressed hard after the change of ends and earned a couple of penalty corners and from one such chance, Zalewski deflected in Govers' flick.
The fourth and final quarter completely belonged to Australia as they pumped in three more goals through Sharp, Anderson and Welch to pocket three points from the game.
India will next play Ireland on Friday.
