Fauja Singh, the 114-year-old marathon icon, will be cremated in Beas on Sunday. The SUV driver who fatally hit him has been arrested and sent to custody.

The last rites of Fauja Singh, who was the was world's oldest marathoner, will be held at 12 pm in his village, Beas, in Jalandhar on Sunday, his son, Harvinder Singh, told PTI over the phone on Friday.
The kin of the Canada-based man, who allegedly hit the 114-year-old marathoner fatally while driving an SUV, also met Singh's family.
"Many of our relatives who live abroad have arrived, while some more will reach by Saturday," Harvinder said.
Amritpal Singh Dhillon (26) was arrested on Tuesday night and sent to judicial custody on Wednesday. The Police had said that Dhillon had returned to Punjab just three weeks ago.
Dhillon's vehicle was also seized, Jalandhar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harvinder Singh said on Wednesday. He further noted that Dhillon, hailing from Dasupur in Kartarpur, went to Canada on a tourist visa; however, he later received a work permit that is valid until 2027.
Dhillon was apprehended at his home in Dasupur, which, according to Fauja Singh's son, is not far from their village in Beas. He added that Dhillon&rsquo;s relatives visited him to express their condolences on Thursday.
"It was his uncle, accompanied by some locals. They live nearby, and most of them know our family. We also mostly know those who live in the neighbourhood of our village. They expressed their condolences and grief over how the accident occurred," he said.
Harvinder reiterated that Dhillon could have stopped his SUV and immediately rushed his father to a hospital.
"I have read that he claimed he did not know whom he had hit. However, he was a local and should have known that someone elderly had been struck by his vehicle. Had he not fled the scene and taken my father to the hospital, maybe that could have saved his life," he said.
Harvinder emphasised that Dhillon should have spoken to his family after the incident, even though he was scared, and admitted that he was responsible.
"He was not our enemy; he could have approached us and admitted it was him. At least for humanity&rsquo;s sake, he should have come forward. Now, the police have taken action in the matter and the case is in their hands," he added.
Earlier, the SSP had said that during preliminary questioning, it came to the fore that Dhillon was driving the SUV at high speed as he was in a hurry for some work.
"At the time, he was not aware of the identity of the man he had hit and told us that he got scared, which is why he did not stop the vehicle", the SSP added.
The officer had told reporters that Dhillon was headed to Jalandhar, but after the accident, returned home by driving through villages.
However, the SSP asserted that it was Dhillon's responsibility to stop the vehicle, and that he should have taken Singh to a hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, Singh was thrown five to seven feet into the air after being struck by the SUV as he was walking across the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway in his native village.
The police identified the Punjab-registered Toyota Fortuner through CCTV footage and recovered fragments of its headlight and other pieces from the accident site.
Leaders from various political parties expressed their condolences over the marathoner&rsquo;s death, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised Singh&rsquo;s unique persona and his ability to inspire the youth in India regarding fitness.
Fauja Singh, the widely admired 114-year-old, became an international icon, starting his marathon career at the age of 89. He earned the nickname "Turbaned Tornado" due to his endurance and athleticism and was the first centenarian to complete a marathon, setting multiple records in international competitions.
He ran in prestigious marathons, including those in London, New York, and Hong Kong, impressing many with his outstanding times for someone over 90 and born with weak legs. One of his most memorable achievements occurred in 2011 when he turned 100; an invitational meet in Toronto was named in his honour, where he broke several world records for his age group.
Despite facing numerous personal challenges, the man demonstrated remarkable resilience and nonchalance. He spent much of his running career in Britain before returning to his roots around three years ago after his retirement.

Police have arrested a Canada-based man who allegedly drove his SUV over Fauja Singh, killing the world's oldest marathoner. Officials said the accused had returned home in Punjab just three weeks ago.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jalandhar Rural, Harvinder Singh, told a press conference that Amritpal Singh Dhillon (26) was arrested on Tuesday night and his vehicle has also been seized.
Dhillon, a native of Kartarpur, had gone to Canada on a tourist visa but got a work permit there, which is valid till 2027, the officer said, adding that the accused came to India late last month.
He was nabbed from his Kartarpur home.
The SSP told reporters that Dhillon was driving his SUV fast as he was in a hurry for some work. "He got scared after hitting Fauja Singh, and that is why he did not stop his car at the spot," Singh said.
The accused also told police that he had got one of the tyres of the car changed on the day of the incident.
During questioning, the accused revealed that his car was moving at a high speed when it hit Fauja Singh, who was crossing the road. The SSP said it was Dhillon's responsibility to stop the vehicle at the time of the accident and should have taken Fauja Singh to a hospital.
Dhillon had allegedly hit Fauja Singh (114) on the highway in the veteran runner's native village of Bias in Punjab's Jalandhar district. Fauja Singh was walking down the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway when the incident occurred, and he succumbed to injuries on Monday evening.
According to villagers, Singh was tossed five to seven feet in the air after being hit by the vehicle.
Following the incident, an FIR was registered against the driver under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, police said.
SSP Singh had told PTI on Tuesday that police have identified the vehicle, a Punjab-registered Toyota Fortuner, from CCTV footage and with fragments of the vehicle's headlight recovered from the accident spot.
"The vehicle's owners have changed more than once (probably resale)," he had said over the phone.
Leaders cutting across party lines condoled the marathoner's death, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying he was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on fitness.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said the veteran marathon runner made the Sikh community around the world proud with his long-distance running. His Haryana counterpart, Nayab Singh Saini, said the news of Fauza Singh's demise was deeply saddening.
The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday paid tributes to Fauja Singh. On the concluding day of the special session of the assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravjot Singh moved a proposal for paying tributes to Singh in the House.

The frail man, who weathered many personal storms with his resilience and "nonchalance", had spent a better part of his running career in Britain and returned to his roots just about three years ago after retiring.
Last year, Singh, in a symbolic gesture, joined Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in a walkathon to spread awareness against drug abuse.
