Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a joint meeting with President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen here and discussed ways to enhance economic as well as people-to-people linkages aimed at creating a better planet.
This is Prime Minister Modi's first official engagement after he arrived here to participate in the G20 Summit where he will join other leaders in discussions on global economic and health recovery from COVID-19, sustainable development and climate change.
&ldquo;Official engagements in Rome begin with a productive interaction with @eucopresident Charles Michel and @vonderleyen, President of the @EU_Commission. The leaders discussed ways to enhance economic as well as people-to-people linkages aimed at creating a better planet,&rdquo; Prime Minister's Office said in a tweet.
India-EU bilateral relations date back to the early 1960s with India being amongst the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the European Economic Community in 1962.
The first India-EU Summit took place on 28 June 2000 in Lisbon and marked a watershed in the evolution of the relationship. The relationship was upgraded to a &lsquo;Strategic Partnership' during the 5th India-EU Summit held in 2004 in The Hague.

Sensex ends 162 points in green, Nifty at 11,937

After a highly volatile session influenced by the European markets, Indian equity benchmarks ended in the green on Wednesday.
The Sensex&nbsp;ended 162 points up at 40,707 and the Nifty closed at 11,937, 0.34% higher.
Powergrid, Bharti&nbsp;Airtel, Tata&nbsp;Steel, Hindalco and GAIL were the top five Nifty gainers.
The rupee depreciated 9 paise to settle at 73.58 against the US dollar.

In a presser, post the meeting the alliance chief said all countries have united to condemn the "horrific" attack on Navalny.
The NATO chief said there was "proof beyond doubt" that Novichok was used.&nbsp;NATO has also demanded Moscow must reveal its Novichok nerve agent programme to the global chemical weapons watchdog.

People who gulp just a glass of wine or a bottle of beer daily could be 25 per cent likely to be obese or suffer from a metabolic syndrome, finds a study involving over 26 million people in South Korea.&nbsp;
Even after adjusting data for factors like age,&nbsp;exercise, smoking, and income, the team's analysis found a close link between alcohol intake and obesity risk.&nbsp;
The highest risk was observed in men who drank more than two drinks or 24g alcohol per day, with 34% higher odds of obesity and 42% greater odds of metabolic syndrome.
The study, presented at the virtual European and International Congress on Obesity, observed similar risks for women except for a slight dip in metabolic syndrome associated with half to one daily drink.&nbsp;

More than 50 per cent of people have been unable to manage their weight during the Covid-19 lockdown, reveals a survey with 800 UK-based respondents.
The cause of weight gain was attributed to increased snacking and reduced exercise by most people, with many also blaming an uptick in stress and anxiety as well as the inability to access healthier food. More than a quarter also said that they are drinking more alcohol during the lockdown.
The findings come up at a time when the UK government is aggressively pushing its anti-obesity strategy with its 'Better Health' campaign to encourage and support people in leading a healthier lifestyle.&nbsp;
The research was presented at the virtual The European and International Congress on Obesity.&nbsp;
