Bill Gates expressed regret over his association with Jeffrey Epstein, denying allegations in newly released documents, while Melinda French Gates said questions remain.

Bill Gates has voiced regret over "every minute" he spent with Jeffrey Epstein, even as the Microsoft co-founder's former wife Melinda said he still had questions to answer over his relationship with the convicted sexual offender.
The latest tranche of documents released by the US Justice Department last week contained emails between many prominent figures and Epstein, often revealing warm friendships, illicit financial dealings and private photos.
In a draft email among the documents, Epstein alleged Gates engaged in extramarital affairs, writing that his relationship with Gates ranged from "helping Bill to get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with russian girls, to facilitating his illicit trysts, with married women."
"Every minute I spent with him, I regret, and I apologize," Gates, a billionaire philanthropist, told 9News Australia in an interview broadcast Wednesday.
"That email was never sent. The email is false," he said. "I don't know what his thinking was there. Was he trying to attack me in some way?"
A Gates spokesperson issued a similar denial after the fresh cache of millions of files related to the investigation into Epstein, who died by suicide in prison in 2019, were released.
"The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein's frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame," the spokesperson said.
Melinda French Gates told US National Public Radio in an interview that the document dump brought back "memories of some very, very painful times in my marriage."
"For me, it's personally hard whenever those details come up," she said.
"Whatever questions remain there of what -- I can't even begin to know all of it -- those questions are for those people and for even my ex-husband. They need to answer to those things, not me."
The couple divorced in 2021.
Bill Gates told 9News that he met Epstein in 2011 and had several dinners with him over three years, but never visited his Caribbean island and didn't have relations with women.
"The focus was always, he knew a lot of very rich people, and he was saying he could get them to give money to global health. In retrospect, that was a dead end," he said.
Someone's name in the Epstein files does not imply any wrongdoing but the documents revealed connections between Epstein and public figures who have often downplayed -- or even denied -- such ties.

Bill and Hillary Clinton will testify in a US House investigation surrounding deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a spokesman for the ex-president said, heading off a potential vote to hold the couple in contempt.
The Epstein affair continues to cast a long shadow over Washington, entangling some of the most prominent names in US politics and highlighting the sharp partisan battles that have shaped the scandal.
A court, meanwhile, is due to hear a request on Wednesday to block access to investigative files linked to Epstein, the New York Times reported, after victims said their names had not been redacted.
The Justice Department released last week what it said would be the final batch of pages, photos and videos from the Epstein files, adding fuel to a political drama that has put pressure on President Donald Trump.
But the department was left scrambling after names of alleged victims -- who were supposed to be anonymized -- were left unredacted, according to lawyers quoted by the Times.
In a letter to judges, Brad Edwards and Brittany Henderson from the Florida legal firm Edwards Henderson cited an email published in the cache of documents "listing 32 minor child victims, with only one name redacted and 31 left visible".
Another woman said that her full address had been published in the files.
The lawyers requested an "immediate takedown" of the government website showing the files.
District Judge Richard M. Berman said in a short order that he would hold a hearing on Wednesday, adding: "I am not certain how helpful I can be."
On Sunday the Justice Department said it was "working around the clock" to make further redactions to the files after New York Times journalists had found dozens of naked photos that include people's faces.
Those photos have since been largely removed or redacted, the Times reported.
 - 'Setting a precedent' -
The House Rules Committee had advanced resolutions accusing the Clintons of defying subpoenas to appear in person to explain their links to Epstein, who died in custody in 2019.
The couple had originally refused to appear before lawmakers examining how authorities handled earlier investigations into the disgraced financier, who had connections and correspondence with the world's business and political elite.
But Clinton spokesman Angel Urena said on X that "the former President and former Secretary of State will be there. They look forward to setting a precedent that applies to everyone."
Democrats say the probe is being weaponized to attack political opponents of Trump -- himself a longtime Epstein associate who has not been called to testify -- rather than to conduct legitimate oversight.
Trump spent months trying to block the disclosure of investigative files linked to Epstein, who moved in elite circles for years, cultivating ties with billionaires, politicians, academics and celebrities.
Neither Trump nor the Clintons have been accused of criminal wrongdoing related to Epstein's activities.
In letters where they initially refused to appear in Washington, the Clintons had argued that the subpoenas were invalid because they lacked a clear legislative purpose.
Republicans say the Democratic couple's past links to the business tycoon, including Bill Clinton's use of his private jet in the early 2000s, justify in‑person questioning under oath.
Instead, the couple submitted sworn written statements describing their knowledge of Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.
Bill Clinton acknowledged flying on Epstein's plane for Clinton Foundation-related humanitarian work, but said he never visited his private island.
Hillary Clinton said she had no meaningful interactions with Epstein, never flew on his plane and never visited his island.
After the Clintons agreed to testify, the Rules Committee decided Monday evening to suspend its vote on the contempt proceedings.

Donald Trump threatened legal action on Monday against the host of the 68th Grammy Awards over the comedian's comment on the US president and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
After congratulating Billie Eilish for winning the Grammy for Song of the Year for her track "Wildflower," host Trevor Noah brought up Trump and Epstein.
"Wow. That's a Grammy that every artist wants -- almost as much as Trump wants Greenland," he quipped, referring to the president's threats to seize the autonomous Arctic territory.
Noah then added: "Which makes sense because, since Epstein's gone, he needs a new island to hang out with Bill Clinton."
Noah, who announced that this will be his final year hosting the Grammys after six turns as emcee, has been light on political commentary in previous years.
His comments drew the ire of the president, who took to his Truth Social platform first saying that the "Grammy Awards are the WORST and virtually unwatchable," before criticizing Noah.
"I can't speak for Bill, but I have never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close, and until tonight&rsquo;s false and defamatory, statement, have never been accused of being there, not even by the Fake News Media," Trump asserted.
The Republican then branded South African Noah a "total loser" who needs to "get his facts straight."
"I'll be sending my lawyers to sue this poor, pathetic, talentless, dope of an M.C. ... Get ready Noah, I'm going to have some fun with you!" Trump added.
Trump, who moved in the same social circles as Epstein in Florida and New York, has fought for months to prevent the release of a vast trove of documents about the disgraced financier and has given varying accounts of why he eventually fell out with Epstein.

From tech titans to Wall Street power brokers and foreign dignitaries, a who's who of powerful men make appearances in the huge trove of documents released by the Justice Department in connection with its investigations of Jeffrey Epstein.&nbsp;
All have denied having anything to do with his sexual abuse of girls and young women. Yet some of them maintained friendships with Epstein, or developed them anew, even after news stories made him widely known as an alleged abuser of young girls.&nbsp;
None has been charged with a crime connected to the investigation. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019.
Here's a primer on some of the notable names in the Epstein files:
 Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor The man formerly known as Britain's Prince Andrew has long been dogged by questions about his relationship with Epstein, including allegations from the late Virginia Roberts Giuffre that she was trafficked by Epstein and instructed to have sex with Mountbatten-Windsor when she was 17. The former prince has repeatedly denied that it happened, but his brother, King Charles III, still stripped him of his royal titles late last year, including the right to be called a prince and the Duke of York. Mountbatten-Windsor's name appears at least several hundred times in Friday's document release, including in Epstein's private emails.
 Sarah Ferguson In March of 2011, Sarah Ferguson, then the Duchess of York, made a public apology for letting Jeffrey Epstein pay off some of her debts. Both she and her ex-husband, the former Prince Andrew, had come under tremendous public scrutiny for continuing a friendly relationship with Epstein after he pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl. She told London's Evening Standard newspaper she would have "nothing ever to do with Jeffrey Epstein ever again." But just two months later, she emailed Epstein to say she was going on Oprah Winfrey's TV show and wanted his advice on how she should answer questions about their relationship.
 Elon Musk The billionaire Tesla founder turns up at least a few times in Friday's document release, notably in email exchanges in 2012 and 2013 in which he discussed visiting Epstein's infamous Caribbean island compound. But it's not immediately clear if the island visits took place. Spokespersons for Musk's companies, Tesla and X, didn't respond to emails seeking comment Friday or Saturday. Musk has maintained that he repeatedly turned down the disgraced financier's overtures.

The company stressed in a statement Saturday that there was no wrongdoing and that any dealings were limited to group or business settings.
 Donald Trump It's long been known that Epstein was friends with Trump before the two had a falling out. The new documents contain thousands of references to Trump, including emails sharing news articles, commenting on his policies and gossiping about him and his family. The Justice Department also disclosed a spreadsheet summarising calls to law enforcement tip lines about Trump.
 Bill Clinton Like Trump, Clinton spent time with Epstein more than two decades ago, including flying on his private jet and visiting the White House. Clinton denied knowledge of Epstein's wrongdoing and his representatives said he broke off relations after 2006.
 Steven Tisch The New York Giants co-owner is mentioned more than 400 times. Correspondence shows Epstein offered to connect Tisch with numerous women over the years.
 Brett Ratner The film director appears in several photographs in the files, including one showing him with Jean Luc Brunel, who later died in jail awaiting trial on rape charges.
 Casey Wasserman The president of the LA 2028 Olympics committee exchanged flirty emails with Ghislaine Maxwell. In one exchange, he wrote: &ldquo;What do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?&rdquo; Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence.
 Ehud Barak The former Israeli prime minister stayed in regular contact with Epstein for years, including after his 2008 guilty plea. The files include plans for a 2017 stay at Epstein's New York residence.
 Larry Summers Clinton's former Treasury Secretary and ex-Harvard president is frequently mentioned. Emails show meetings and discussions even after Epstein was charged in 2019. Summers has called his interactions &ldquo;a major error of judgment.&rdquo;
 Howard Lutnick Trump's commerce secretary visited Epstein's island with his family in 2012, contradicting earlier claims of cutting ties. Emails show plans to arrive by yacht with his children.
 Sergey Brin The Google co-founder made plans to meet Epstein and Maxwell at his New York townhouse. Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Many have denied having close ties to the late financier, or at least having anything to do with his alleged sexual abuse of girls and young women that led to his arrest on sex trafficking charges. None have been charged with a crime connected to the investigation. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019.
Yet some of them maintained friendships with Epstein, or developed them anew, even after he became known as a predator of young girls and registered sex offender. Here's a primer on some of the notable names in the Epstein files: 
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor&nbsp;

In a 2013 exchange, Branson invited Epstein to his own private Caribbean island, which regularly hosts large conferences, charity events and business meetings. &ldquo;Any time you're in the area would love to see you,&rdquo; he wrote. &ldquo;As long as you bring your harem!&rdquo;
In another message that year, he suggested Epstein rehabilitate his image by convincing Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to tell the public how Epstein had &ldquo;been a brilliant adviser to him&rdquo; and had &ldquo;more than learnt your lesson and have done nothing that's against the law since.&rdquo;
The company stressed in a statement Saturday that there was no wrongdoing on Branson's part and that any dealings with Epstein were &ldquo;limited to group or business settings&rdquo; more than a decade ago. Branson also declined a charitable donation and decided not to meet or speak with him again after his team &ldquo;uncovered serious allegations," the company said.
&ldquo;Had they had the full picture and information, there would have been no contact whatsoever," the statement reads. "Richard believes that Epstein's actions were abhorrent and supports the right to justice for his many victims.&rdquo;

Steven Tisch
The New York Giants co-owner is mentioned more than 400 times in the files released Friday. Correspondence between the two shows Epstein offered to connect Tisch to numerous women over the years.
In one 2013 email exchange with the subject line &ldquo;Ukrainian girl,&rdquo; Epstein encouraged Tisch to contact a particular woman, whose physical beauty he praised in crude terms. &ldquo;Pro or civilian?&rdquo; Tisch asked in reply.
Tisch, a scion of a powerful New York family that founded the Loews Corporation, has acknowledged knowing Epstein but denied ever going to his infamous Caribbean island.
&ldquo;We had a brief association where we exchanged emails about adult women, and in addition, we discussed movies, philanthropy and investments,&rdquo; said Tisch, who also won an Academy Award in 1994 for producing &ldquo;Forrest Gump.&rdquo;
&ldquo;As we all know now, he was a terrible person and someone I deeply regret associating with.&rdquo; 
Casey Wasserman
The president of the committee for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles exchanged flirty emails with Epstein confidant Ghislaine Maxwell, Friday's document release shows.
In a 2003 exchange, Wasserman wrote to Maxwell: &ldquo;I think of you all the time. So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?&rdquo;
In another, Maxwell asks whether it will be foggy enough during an upcoming visit &ldquo;so that you can float naked down the beach and no one can see you unless they are close up?&rdquo;
Wasserman released a statement Saturday saying he never had a personal or business relationship with Epstein and that he regretted the correspondence with Maxwell, which he said came &ldquo;long before her horrific crimes came to light.&rdquo;
Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking and abuse of minors. 
Ehud Barak
The former Israeli prime minister and his wife turn up frequently in the documents released Friday, showing they stayed in regular contact with Epstein for years, including well after his 2008 guilty plea for sex crimes in Florida.
Among the correspondence are plans for a 2017 stay at Epstein's New York residence. Other missives discuss mundane logistics for other visits, meetings and phone calls with Epstein.
Barak has acknowledged regularly visiting Epstein on his trips to New York and flying on his private plane, but maintains he never observed any inappropriate behaviour or parties. Barak served as Israel's prime minister from 1999 to 2001 and later served as its defense minister. 
Howard Lutnick
President Donald Trump's commerce secretary visited Epstein's private Caribbean island with his family on at least one occasion, records released Friday show. That appears to contradict prior statements he's made claiming he cut ties with the disgraced financier, who he's called &ldquo;gross,&rdquo; decades ago.
But emails show Lutnick and his wife accepted an invitation to Little St James in the US Virgin Islands in December 2012 and planned to arrive by yacht with their children.
The former chairman of Newmark, a major commercial real estate firm, also had drinks on another occasion in 2011 with Epstein and corresponded with him about the construction of a building across the street from both of their homes.
The Commerce Department, in a statement, said Lutnick had &ldquo;limited interactions with Mr Epstein in the presence of his wife and has never been accused of wrongdoing.&rdquo; 
Sergey Brin
The billionaire Google co-founder made plans to meet with Epstein and Maxwell at his townhouse in New York years before he was publicly accused of sexually abusing underage girls, emails show.
In one exchange in 2003, Maxwell invited him to join her at a screening of the Renee Zellweger film &ldquo;Down with Love&rdquo; in New York. She followed up a few weeks later to invite him to a &ldquo;happily casual and relaxed&rdquo; dinner at Epstein's house. Brin offered to bring along Google's then-CEO Eric Schmidt.
Spokespersons for Google didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment Saturday. 
Steve Bannon
The one-time adviser to Trump exchanged hundreds of friendly texts with Epstein, some sent months before his 2019 arrest and jailhouse suicide. The two discussed politics, travel and a documentary Bannon was said to be planning that would help salvage Epstein's reputation.
One 2018 exchange, for example, focused on Trump's threats at the time to oust Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. In a 2019 message, Bannon asked Epstein if he could supply his plane to pick him up in Rome.
Bannon hasn't responded to emails seeking comment. 
Miroslav Lajcak
A national security adviser to the Slovakian prime minister, Lajcak resigned Saturday after his past communications with Epstein appeared in Friday's document release. Opposition parties and a nationalist partner in Fico's governing coalition had called for him to step down.
Lajcak, a former Slovak foreign minister and a onetime president of the UN General Assembly, has not been accused of any wrongdoing, but was photographed meeting with Epstein in the years between his initial release from jail and his subsequent indictment in 2019 on sex trafficking charges.
He said his correspondence with Epstein were part of his diplomatic duties.
