A terrorist was shot dead by security forces during an encounter after ultras on Tuesday evening opened fire at a village in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
The terrorists struck Saida Sukhal village near Koota Mode in the Hiranagar sector, a police spokesperson said, adding details of the incident are awaited.
According to officials, at around 7:45 pm 2-3 the militants forcefully entered a house and asked for water. Father and son ran away from the house, and terrorists started firing on them, they said.&nbsp;
Police and other security forces were rushed to the village. A couple of gunshots were heard, believed to be fired by the suspected terrorists, they said.
One terrorist was killed in the exchange of firing and a search operation is on to track down the other terrorists believed to be holed up in the village, the officials said.&nbsp;

According to media reports quoting officials, Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Aashish Dhonchak, deputy superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat were critically injured in the encounter and died during treatment.&nbsp;
The encounter had broken out between security forces and terrorists hiding in the Gadole area of Kokernag Tehsil in Anantnag district on Tuesday night.&nbsp;

India Today reported that TRF has said that the act was to avenge the killing of their veteran leader in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir earlier in September.&nbsp;
LeT commander Riyaz Ahmed was shot dead inside a mosque in the Rawalakot region of POK on September 8.
Colonel Manpreet Singh, Commanding Officer of 19 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Ashish Dhonack, and Deputy Superintendent Humayun Bhat were critically injured in the gunfight with terrorists that ensued in the Garol area of Anantnag district in the morning hours of Wednesday.
The officers succumbed to their injuries during the treatment, the officials said, adding a jawan also died. The whereabouts of another soldier was not immediately known and it is feared he might have been seriously wounded.
DGP Dilbag Singh condoled the death of the braveheart officers of the police and army. In a message, he said every loss of life is unfortunate and asserted that the perpetrators of the crime would be brought to justice soon.
He extended his sympathies to the bereaved families.

Bhat, father of a two-month-old daughter and son of retired Inspector General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Ghulam Hasan Bhat, died due to heavy blood loss, they added.
The banned Resistance Front believed to be a shadow group of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Officials believe that it is the same set of terrorists who had carried out the attack on army personnel on August 4 killing three jawans in the higher reaches of the Halan forest area of Kulgam district.
The operation against the terrorists began on Tuesday evening in the Garol area but was called off during the night.
This morning, the hunt for the terrorists resumed after information started trickling that they were spotted at a hideout, the officials said.
Colonel Singh, leading his team from the front, attacked the terrorists. However, he was critically injured in the bullets fired by the terrorists.
Singh, who belonged to the 12th Sikh LI, was a recipient of the Sena medal. Dhonack belonged to the 15th Sikh LI.
Dhonack and Bhat were also hit by bullets resulting in critical injuries, the officials said.
Senior army and police officers, GoC 15 Corps Lt General Rajiv Ghai and including DGP Dilbag Singh rushed to the spot to assess the situation.

A Lashkar-e-Taiba "hybrid terrorist", who was arrested following the death of two labourers in a grenade blast in Shopian, has been killed in an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.
"Based on disclosure of arrested hybrid terrorist and in continuous raids by police and security forces, another contact has been established between terrorists and SFs at Nowgam, Shopian, in which hybrid terrorist Imran Bashir Ganaie (was) killed by firing of another terrorist," Kashmir Zone police said in a tweet on Wednesday.

It said incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, were seized from the encounter site.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Tangpawa area of the south Kashmir district late on Sunday night after receiving specific input about the presence of terrorists there.
On Monday morning, the army sent its assault dog named Zoom inside the house where the militants were holed up, the officials said.
"Zoom is a highly trained, ferocious, and committed canine. Has been trained to locate and bring down terrorists," they said.
Zoom has been part of many active operations in south Kashmir, they said.
On Monday, Zoom, as usual, was tasked to clear the house where terrorists were hiding, they said.
However, during the operation, the canine received two gunshots and was critically injured, the officials said.
"Zoom identified and attacked the terrorists during which the canine received two gunshots," they said.
The officials, however, said the canine kept on fighting and performing his task which resulted in the killing of two militants.
"Inspite of severe injuries, the brave soldier continued his task which resulted in neutralisation of two terrorists," they added.
Zoom was rushed to the Army’s Vet Hospital here where the canine is currently under treatment, the officials said.
Two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed in the encounter, while as many soldiers were also injured.

One of the slain terrorists was identified as Zubair Sofi of Kulgam's Mohanpora, he informed.
Sofi was involved in the killing of Rajni Bala, a teacher, on May 31, the spokesperson said, adding that the identification of the other terrorist is being ascertained.
The operation is still in progress, a police official said.

Two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists from Pakistan were gunned down in an over night encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar with police saying that the duo were planning to attack the Amarnath Yatra which begins on June 30. The encounter broke out in Bemina locality of Srinagar, after security forces received a tip off about the presence of terrorists there. A policeman was also injured in the cross firing. 
The Kashmir Zone Police chief Vijay Kumar in a tweet said that Pakistan-based handlers had sent two terrorists along with one local terrorist with the intention to attack Yatra.
Calling the operation a "big success", Kumar said the slain duo had escaped from an encounter in Sopore and their movements were being traced since then.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Two AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines, Live rounds, Y-SMS device, and "other incriminating material was recovered," police said.
Last week, lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha had reviewed the preparations for the ensuing annual Amarnath Yatra at a high-level meeting at Raj Bhawan. The 43-day-long pilgrimage to south Kashmir Himalayas will commence on June 30.
Earlier this month, union home minister Amit Shah too had held a high-level meeting where preparedness for the Amarnath Yatra was discussed.

Another encounter happened on Saturday, one terrorist was gunned down and more militants are expected at this moment at Chirmarg in the Zainapora area of Shopian. However, it is not yet known who this militant is.
It has been reported that along with a terrorist a soldier was also shot dead during an encounter.Following the information provided by the JK Police in the area, the police, army, and CRPF jointly launched an operation earlier. However, the hiding militants fired upon the joint team of forces as they led to a heightened of their search for the target location.It is the 15th encounter of this year and the 2nd of this month that security forces have been involved in.
Earlier on 5th Feb, two terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and The Resistance Front (TRF) were shot dead in the Zakura area of Srinagar City.

Security forces engaged with a group of terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian&nbsp;district on Saturday, with reports saying that a terrorist was gunned down while two army soldiers laid down their lives. Reports said that the police, army and the Central Reserve Police Force launched a search operation after receiving inputs about the presence of ultras in&nbsp;Chirmarg&nbsp;village of the volatile south Kashmir district. As the forces came close to the suspected spot, the hiding ultras opened a barrage of fire which was returned. In the initial round of firing an ultra and two soldiers died while another army trooper was injured.&nbsp; A defence ministry spokesperson based in Srinagar identified the slain soldiers as Santosh Yadav and Chavan Romit Tanaji, both from the&nbsp;Rashtriya Rifles unit. This is the 15th encounter between security&nbsp;forces and terrorists in Kashmir valley since the beginning of this year.

3 terrorists were neutralized in an encounter that broke out late Thursday evening in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, as per PTI report.
Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Zolwa village of Budgam district which turned into an encounter.
Incriminating materials include arms and ammunition have been recovered while the identity and affiliation of the dead is being ascertained, IGP Kashmir stated.

A Pakistani terrorist and three other persons were killed in Hyderpora on November 15 and police claimed that all the slain men had links to militancy. The families of the three had, however, claimed that they were innocent and were used as human shield by the Army.
The SIT has said that while one civilian was killed by the foreign terrorist, the owner of the building and a local militant died in "crossfire" after being used as a human shield by the hiding terrorists.
Dr Mudasir Gul, his staff Amir Margay and businessman Altaf Bhat were killed in the encounter at the building owned by Bhatt.
"Perhaps the foreign terrorist received instructions from outside that Dr Mudasir may have been behind the encounter. On this suspicion, he killed Dr Mudasir Gul in the attic," said Mr Kumar.
"After killing Dr Mudasir, they used Altaf Bhat as a human shield while trying to flee. In the ensuing firing, Altaf Bhat was hit by a bullet. His body was found at the terrace with Amir Margay," the SIT chief said.
The police have defended releasing findings of the SIT probe when a magisterial probe ordered by the government has not been made public saying it will not influence the probe by additional district magistrate.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said the SIT probe is a cover up.
"SIT's clear chit to armed forces in Hyderpora encounter isn't surprising. It was purely a charade to cover up a botched up operation & absolve those culpable for killing innocent civilians. How can one expect justice when they themselves are judge, jury & executioner?" Ms Mehbooba tweeted.
