Botswana&rsquo;s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to end 20,000 elephants to Germany. It sounds like the declaration of a medieval war, but the reality is a bit complex.
Botswana has an elephant problem. They have too many of them, roughly 1.3 lakh. So, when Germany proposed stricter curbs on the import of trophies from hunting animals, it became a major concern for the African nation.
Trophy hunting not only helps limit the number of elephants but supports the country's economy. Some hunters pay as much as $50,000 for each elephant killed.
This is why President Masisi said Germany's move would impoverish people in his country.
Notably, the Botswana government had imposed a ban on trophy hunting in 2014 owing to a rise in poaching incidents. It even announced a &lsquo;shoot-to-kill&rsquo; policy targeting suspected poachers. But the ban was lifted in 2019 as the elephant population grew exponentially and there was a rise in human-animal conflicts.
On multiple occasions, Botswana has donated elephants to neighbouring countries in a bid to contain its elephant problem.

At least 18 wild elephants were found dead atop Bamuni Hills in Assam's Nagaon district. Preliminary investigation into the deaths by the forest department has revealed that the wild elephants could have been killed in lighting strikes.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Amit Sahay told media the Chief Wildlife Warden and DFO (district forest officer) were &lsquo;dispatched to the area and they will conduct an investigation to ascertain what led to the deaths of the 18 wild elephants&rsquo;
Assam Environment and Forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya has said he is "deeply pained" by the incident. Suklabaidya said he would be visiting the spot to take stock of the situation.

Now, the African forest elephant is critically endangered while the African savanna elephant is endangered- they were previously classified as a single species. These species are facing extinction within a reasonable time, which experts suggest, could be as little as 10 years. The number of African forests elephants have fallen by more than 86% over a 31 year period while savanna elephants have fallen by more than 60% over a 50 year period. One more female elephant was found dead near a waterbody in the Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary, a forest official said. Earlier, four female elephants and a calf have died there since February 1. According to the 2018 census the sanctuary had 17 elephants. There were no reports of the death of other animals in the sanctuary.
