In a significant political update, the Congress party appears to be heading for a second consecutive electoral setback in Haryana, as early counts from Wednesday morning's municipal elections demonstrate a strong showing for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP is leading or has already secured victory in nine out of ten mayoral seats across key civic bodies, including significant wins in Gurugram and Rohtak&mdash;areas traditionally considered strongholds for senior Congress figure Bhupinder Hooda.
In Manesar, the only exception to BJP's sweep, independent candidate Dr. Inderjit Yadav, a former BJP leader running as a rebel, is currently in the lead.
While the Congress has mainly refrained from contesting local polls under its own banner, in this election cycle, the party fielded candidates for several posts, notably for the mayoral race in Gurugram.
This marked the first direct face-off against the BJP for the seat.
In response to the Congress challenge, the BJP deployed high-profile figures from neighboring states, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Nayab Saini and his Delhi counterpart Rekha Gupta, both undertaking comprehensive campaigning with door-to-door outreach and vibrant roadshows.
The Congress countered with heavyweights like former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and Bhupinder Hooda.
Despite these efforts, the outcome was decisively one-sided. In Gurugram, incumbent BJP candidate Raj Rani maintained a substantial lead over her Congress rival Seema Pahuja, boasting a margin of over 95,000 votes after six rounds of counting.
Congress stumbles in Rohtak
Rohtak's mayoral race, theoretically a five-cornered battle involving the BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Indian National Lok Dal, and an independent candidate, witnessed BJP's Ram Avtar securing a commanding victory.
He accrued over 100,000 votes, leaving the Congress's Surajmal Kiloi trailing with a deficit of more than 45,000 ballots. This result is particularly damaging for Congress, given the region's status as former Chief Minister Hooda's stronghold.
BJP claims Ambala, maintains lead in Faridabad
In Ambala, BJP's Shailja Sachdeva triumphed over Congress's Amisha Chawla by 20,487 votes. Meanwhile, in Faridabad, BJP's Parveen Joshi maintained his lead over Congress contender Lata Rani.
BJP leads across Hisar, Karnal, Panipat
In other key areas, the BJP continued its domination, with Praveen Popli leading in Hisar against Congress's Krishan Singla. In Karnal, Renu Bala Gupta is ahead of Congress&rsquo;s Manoj Wadhwa, while in Panipat, Komal Saini leads Congress's Savita Garg.
Additionally, senior BJP leader Rajiv Jain is outperforming Congress's Komal Dewan in Sonipat, and in Yamunanagar, BJP's Suman is ahead of Congress candidate Kirna Devi.
Voting took place on March 2 in Faridabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal, Yamunanagar, as well as Gurugram and Manesar, with by-elections for Ambala and Sonipat's mayoral posts occurring the same day.
Panipat residents cast their votes on March 9. Elections for 21 municipal committees were held concurrently.
A notable decline in voter participation was observed, with turnout at a mere 41%, marking a record low in comparison to the 68% witnessed during the Assembly elections.
Additionally, 26 ward members were elected unopposed, including Kuldeep Singh (Faridabad), Vikas Yadav (Gurugram), Sankalp Bhandari and Sanjeev Kumar Mehta (Karnal), and Bhavna (Yamunanagar).

In addition to this announcement, on January 12, Congress revealed its third guarantee, the 'Yuva Udaan Yojana,' which promises to provide a monthly stipend of Rs 8,500 to educated, unemployed youth in Delhi for one year, should the party win the upcoming election.
Prior to this, on January 8, Congress had introduced the 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana,' offering Rs 25 lakh health insurance coverage to residents. Earlier on January 6, the 'Pyari Didi' scheme was launched, promising Rs 2,500 to women in Delhi.
The Delhi Assembly elections are set for February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. The last date to file nominations is January 17, followed by scrutiny on January 18 and withdrawal by January 20.
Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, has faced a decline in the past two elections, failing to win any seats. Meanwhile, the AAP claimed a decisive victory in 2020, winning 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP secured just eight.

In order to ensure that necessary arrangements for the conduct of free, fair and peaceful election have been made as per provisions of Law and to oversee the electoral process with strict vigilance, the State Election Commission, Punjab has deputed 22 IAS Officers as Election Observers in different Districts of the State. Out of these, five officers will oversee elections in 5 Municipal Corporations (with one officer in each Municipal Corporation).
Disclosing this on December 11, an official spokesperson of the Punjab State Election Commission said that remaining Observers will supervise Municipal Council/ Nagar Panchayat Elections in different Districts of the State. These Observers were directed to reach their allotted Districts latest by 11 AM on 12 December 2024 (i.e. last day of nominations) to review all arrangements and necessary activities pertaining to the elections.
He further informed that these Observers shall review law and order arrangements made by the District Administration with regard to elections, elections related complaints, quantity of elections material, commissioning of EVMs, training of polling staff, enforcement of Model Code of Conduct, Videography/CCTV arrangements etc. They would be available in their allotted Districts, till the counting process is over. This is for the information of general public, and candidates.

Raghav Chadha has accused the BJP of running a "derogatory and misleading" campaign on social media against Kejriwal.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission accusing the BJP of using "absurd" content on social media to tarnish the image of its convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
An AAP delegation requested the Election Commission to take cognisance of the complaint and ensure proper action against the BJP, senior AAP leader and party MP Raghav Chadha said.
"The BJP is using substandard and absurd content while trying to spoil the image of our party and leader Arvind Kejriwal. They are trying his character assassination," he charged, objecting to a post on November 5.
Last week, the Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to Kejriwal for alleged disparaging remarks made by AAP against Prime Minister Narendra Modi its social media handle and asked him to respond to the charge of poll code violation by November 16.
A day later, Chadha had accused the BJP of running a "derogatory and misleading" campaign on social media against Kejriwal and said AAP would submit a complaint to the Election Commission.
After filing the complaint on Monday, Chadha said politics and public life require some level of dignity and if any party violates it, "the same reflects the 'sansakar' the party".

The Election Commission has started a special call centre in Madhya Pradesh's Alirajpur district to encourage migrant workers to vote

Kirla Dodwa (40), who works a cotton picker at a ginning factory in Surendranagar district of Gujarat, is among the thousands of tribals from western Madhya Pradesh who are forced to live far away from homes to earn their livelihood.
It is a big challenge for the Election Commission to motivate and encourage these migrant workers to come to their native place to vote in the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections.
A special call centre has been started in MP's Alirajpur district from Sunday to invite these migrant labourers to vote in the state polls scheduled on November 17, officials said.
Special posters and songs have also been prepared in local Bhili dialect to raise awareness about voting among the migrant workers of the tribal community, they said.
There has been large scale migration of people from the tribal-dominated Alirajpur district for employment. The district has two assembly seats - Alirajpur and Jobat.
According to government estimates, out of the total 5.66 lakh voters in the two seats, about 85,000 people have gone to the neighbouring states of Gujarat and Maharashtra for jobs.
In the 2018 assembly elections, Jobat assembly constituency witnessed 52.84 per cent voter turnout, which was the lowest among all the 230 seats in the state, the officials said.
Alirajpur's Collector and District Election Officer Abhay Arvind Bedekar told PTI, &ldquo;We have started a call centre comprising a 20-member team to call around 85,000 migrant workers of Alirajpur district and invite them to come and vote at their native place. We have already collected the mobile numbers of most of these workers.&rdquo; Their employers in neighbouring states like Gujarat and Maharashtra are also being asked to give paid leave to these workers for voting as per the Election Commission's instructions, he said.
The Alirajpur administration is also considering sending a team of its officers to Gujarat to meet the employers of migrant workers in a bid to encourage voting during the polls, Bedekar said.
According to officials, special posters and songs have also been prepared in local Bhili dialect to raise awareness about voting among the migrant workers of the tribal community.
Anil Tanwar, an expert on tribal culture, has written one such song - "Mamaar aavo, mamaar aavo re, vutu nakhane mamaar aavo re" (come quickly, come quickly, come quickly to vote).
He said due to lack of proper job avenues, tribals from Alirajpur as well as from Dhar, Jhabua, Khargone and Barwani districts move to Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and other states in large numbers.
Kirla Dodwa, the tribal from Madhya Pradesh who works in Gujarat, said over phone, "I do not have farming land in my village in Alirajpur district. We get higher wages in factories in Gujarat than in Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, I have to come to Gujarat with my family.&rdquo; Asked if he was aware of the upcoming MP assembly polls, Dodwa, the father of two sons and a daughter, replied "no".
When he was informed that voting for the state assembly polls is to be held on November 17, Dodwa said he would take three-four days' leave from work and come to his village to cast vote, otherwise the village sarpanch would criticise him for not voting in the "big elections".&nbsp;

'We are not lawmakers': Delhi HC on PIL for compulsory voting in elections

The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking direction to the Centre and the Election Commission to make voting compulsory in parliament and assembly polls, saying it cannot force a person to vote.
"We are not lawmakers. We cannot pass such directions. Is there any provision in the Constitution that makes voting compulsory?&rdquo; a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said.
The court warned the petitioner, advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, it would dismiss the petition with costs after which he withdrew it.
Upadhyay had filed the public interest litigation, saying compulsory voting will ensure every citizen has a voice, will improve the quality of democracy and secure the right to vote. The plea said low voter turnout is a persistent problem and compulsory voting can help increase the turnout, particularly among marginalised communities.

No election for CWC; Congress chief Kharge to nominate members 

Several members expressed their views both in favour and against the polls to CWC, he told reporters.

&nbsp;The Congress steering committee on Friday unanimously decided to authorise party president Mallikarjun Kharge to nominate all members of the working committee, the party's highest decision making body.
Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said the committee freely discussed the matter of CWC elections and almost all 45 members present at the meeting unanimously decided to authorise the Congress president to nominate members.
Several members expressed their views both in favour and against the polls to CWC, he told reporters.
"We are fully confident that all AICC and PCC delegates will support this unanimous decision," he said.

Most of the Opposition parties have decided to oppose the Election Commission's proposal on remote electronic voting machine (RVM) as it is sketchy and not concrete, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said on Sunday.
He made the remarks after a meeting of Opposition parties that was attended by leaders of the Congress, JD(U), CPI, CPI(M), National Conference, JMM among others.
Singh said there are huge political anomalies in the proposal for remote voting machine with things like the definition of migrant labourers not clear.
The meeting came a day before the Election Commission showcases the remote electronic voting machine (RVM) prototype for migrant voters to representatives of political parties.
The poll panel has invited eight recognised national parties and 57 recognised state parties for a demonstration on Monday morning.&nbsp;
If implemented after stakeholder consultations, a RVM would enable migrant voters to vote from remote polling stations.

But the party's candidate Chen Shih-chung, who lost his battle for mayor of Taipei, only raised the issue of the Chinese Communist Party's threat a few times before he quickly switched back to local issues as there was little interest.
Tsai offered her resignation on Saturday evening, a tradition after a major loss, in a short speech in which she also thanked supporters.
&ldquo;I must shoulder all the responsibility,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;Faced with a result like this, there are many areas that we must deeply review.&rdquo; While international observers and the ruling party have attempted to link the elections to the long-term existential threat that is Taiwan's neighbor, many local experts do not think China had a large role to play this time around.

Amid a divisive split in his party, he said any individual statement or written oaths made by the group's 30 lawmakers supporting any bloc was invalid because a decision will only be made by the coalition's highest-decision making body. Anyone going against it can be sacked, he warned.
Zahid, who faces dozens of graft charges, is facing a revolt within his party amid growing calls for him to resign and take responsibility for the election losses. Some lawmakers who won have openly voiced their support for Muhyiddin's bloc but others warned reviving such a partnership may lead to a repeat of the infighting that led to political turmoil Many rural Malays, who form two-thirds of Malaysia's 33 million people &mdash; which includes large minorities of ethnic Chinese and Indians &mdash; fear they may lose their rights with greater pluralism under Anwar's multiethnic alliance. Officials from Muhyiddin's camp claimed that 18 lawmakers from Zahid's bloc are on their side. After the king extended the deadline for political parties, the National Alliance said in a statement it had already handed to the palace written oaths from more than 112 lawmakers who support Muhyiddin as the next prime minister, giving it the majority.
Any deal will have to be approved by Sultan Abdullah. The king's role is largely ceremonial in Malaysia, but he appoints the person he believes has majority support in Parliament as prime minister.
Saturday's election outcome stunned many Malaysians who had hoped for stability and unity after political turmoil that has seen three prime ministers since 2018 polls.
The current scenario is a replay of what happened in 2020, when Muhyiddin abandoned Anwar's ruling alliance, causing its collapse, and joined hands with UMNO to form a new government. Sultan Abdullah at the time requested written oaths from all 222 lawmakers and later interviewed them separately before picking Muhyiddin as prime minister. But his government was beset by internal rivalries and Muhyiddin resigned after 17 months.
Muhyiddin's alliance entered Saturday's polls as an underdog but enjoyed an unexpected surge of support. Its hard-line ally is the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, the biggest winner with a haul of 49 seats &mdash; more than double what it won in 2018. Known as PAS, it touts Sharia, rules three states and is now the single largest party. Its rise has stoked fears of greater Islamization in the country.

On Tuesday, Israelis voted for an unprecedented fifth time in four years to break the political impasse that has paralysed the country.

Exit polls by all the leading Israeli TV channels on Wednesday following the fifth general elections in the country in less than four years predicted a comeback for former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led right-wing bloc.

The exit polls were broadcast soon after polling booths closed at 10 PM local time on Tuesday. However, official results are not expected until late Wednesday. The process of forming the government could drag on for weeks.
According to the Central Elections Committee, voter turnout was 71.3 per cent in the election, the highest since 2015.
The exit polls saw pro-Netanyahu bloc winning 61-62 seats in the 120-member Knesset (Israeli parliament), just about making the magical figure that would see him making a comeback after losing power following March 2019 polls.
Prime Minister Yair Lapid led bloc was put at 54-55 seats as per the exit polls. Public broadcaster Kan and Channel 12 gave the Netanyahu-led bloc 62 seats, while Channel 12 put it at 61.
Reacting to the exit polls, Netanyahu said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a good start, that&rsquo;s all I can say right now.&rdquo; However, he added cautiously, &ldquo;It depends on the real count.&rdquo; Israel has been locked in an unprecedented period of political stalemate since 2019, when 73-year-old Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving leader was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust.
On Tuesday, Israelis voted for an unprecedented fifth time in four years to break the political impasse that has paralysed the country.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday announced that his new political outfit will be named as 'Democratic Azad Party'.
The development comes exactly a month after Azad resigned from the Congress party.
Announcing the name of the new party at a press conference here, Azad said that the outfit will be secular, democratic and independent from any influence. 
Azad also unveiled the flag of the Democratic Azad Party. The flag has three colours - mustard, white and blue. Yesterday, Azad held meetings with his workers and leaders. Earlier, Azad, in his first public meeting in Jammu after quitting Congress, had announced the launch of his own political outfit that will focus on the restoration of full statehood. 
He had said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would decide the party's name and flag. "I've not decided upon a name for my party yet. The people of J-K will decide the party's name and flag. I'll give a Hindustani name to my party that everyone can understand," he said at the rally after breaking away from his five-decade-long association with the grand old party.
 "My party will focus on the restoration of full statehood, right to land, and employment to native domicile," he added then. Azad said that the first unit of his political outfit would be formed in Jammu and Kashmir in view of impending assembly polls.

The posters have come as a surprise amid speculations about Nitish Kumar becoming the possible candidate of opposition leaders in the national elections.&nbsp;

Posters of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar were put up at JD(U) office in Patna on Thursday, projecting him as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;
However, it is&nbsp; not clear if the posters were put up by the JD(U). Videos of the posters shared by ANI promised good governance and gave the slogan 'Pradesh mein dikha, desh mein dikhega'.
The posters have been put up amid speculations about Nitish Kumar becoming the possible candidate of the joint opposition in the national elections.&nbsp;
Interestingly, the posters have come up a day after an interesting turn of events at press conference by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and Telangana CM KC Rao in Patna.&nbsp;
Asked whether Nitish Kumar, who for long has been fancied as a potential challenger to charismatic Modi, could be the prime ministerial candidate of a united opposition, KCR said &ldquo;bade bhai (big brother) Nitish ji is one of the best and senior-most leaders in the country. I am nobody to take a decision. It will be decided when all opposition parties sit together&rdquo;.
When faced with a pointed query about the role of the Congress in a united opposition and acceptability of Rahul Gandhi, he retorted that &ldquo;you may be smart but I am smarter. There is no hurry. Everything will be decided in due course&rdquo;.
