Priyanka Gandhi lies on ground, Rahul detained as Delhi Police stop INDIA bloc MPs' Jantar Mantar march

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen lying on the ground as Delhi Police detained INDIA bloc MPs during their march towards Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise. Rahul Gandhi was also detained.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen lying on the ground as Delhi Police detained several INDIA bloc MPs who were marching towards Jantar Mantar to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
Police personnel later removed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the site near Jantar Mantar. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was also detained.
According to Congress, Priyanka Gandhi said, “I will not move from here. This is how they treat MPs who simply want to meet the Election Commission. This is how they beat up MPs. Women police personnel have scratched me all over and thrown us to the ground. Let them call their forces back.”
Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi accused the Centre of “hooliganism” after opposition MPs were stopped from proceeding towards the protest site.
Channi said, "We want to go towards the ECI office; this government has resorted to hooliganism. There is no democracy. We are being stopped."
Congress MP Pawan Khera also questioned the police action, saying the MPs were exercising their constitutional right to protest.
Khera said, "It is our democratic right; we are fighting for this right. Article 19 grants us permission to protest in this manner, and Jantar Mantar is a designated spot; if we cannot stage a protest here, then where else can we do it? We are fighting for our rights—fighting for the rights of the country's voters—yet every time, we are being stopped in this struggle. We are being prevented from even entering this designated protest site, Jantar Mantar; Members of Parliament are being stopped from entering. It is not the Delhi Police's fault; their boss is a coward."
RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha alleged that force was used by the police and said the agitation was not limited to CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Jha told reporters, "This is a launch. Not just Gyanesh Kumar; this Government is going out now. They are launching a lathi charge on the soul of India, on the democracy of India. Shame on such people."
Heavy security was deployed near Jantar Mantar as INDIA bloc MPs moved towards the designated protest site against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Earlier in the afternoon, the INDIA bloc MPs attended a meeting convened by Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the issue concerning the CEC.
The latest action comes a day after opposition leaders held a protest march and dharna at Akashvani Bhawan. The INDIA bloc has since intensified its agitation and moved towards Jantar Mantar.

AAP leaders and workers marched towards the Delhi CEO’s office on Wednesday, alleging voter-list irregularities and “vote theft”. Police stopped the protesters at barricades during the march.

AAP stages ‘vote theft’ protest in Delhi, workers stopped by police barricades

AAP leaders and workers marched towards the Delhi CEO’s office on Wednesday, alleging voter-list irregularities and “vote theft”. Police stopped the protesters at barricades during the march.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and workers were stopped by police barricades on Wednesday while marching from the Sindhi Academy near Kashmere Gate towards the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office. The protesters alleged widespread "vote theft" and raised concerns over the deletion of names from electoral rolls.
AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said the party would approach the Delhi CEO over what he described as irregularities during the 2025 election and subsequent voter-list revisions.
"Today, we will approach the CEO, the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, because in the irregularities they committed during the election, AAP was defeated unfairly in 2025. Following that, nearly 50 lakh votes—around 47 lakh people's names were deleted during the SIR (Special Intensive Revision); 11 lakh were deleted prior to the SIR, and notices were issued to 33 lakh people. If they strike off more than half of Delhi's votes like this, it is outright fraud," Bhardwaj said during the march.
Bhardwaj said AAP would continue raising the issue against both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission.
"We have been continuously raising our voice against the BJP and the Election Commission, and we will keep raising it," he asserted.
On the opposition's broader INDIA bloc campaign, Bhardwaj said, "We are not part of the INDIA bloc, but we are certainly in India."
The AAP protest came a day after Rahul Gandhi led INDIA bloc MPs in a march from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday. The opposition leaders sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.
Police stopped the march near the NITI Aayog area, following which Opposition leaders staged a sit-in.
The Opposition has accused the Election Commission of not addressing its concerns regarding voter-list revisions and has sought greater transparency in the SIR process. The INDIA bloc had also announced a broader "Save Democracy" campaign, including protests against the CEC and the SIR exercise.
Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the electoral process was being undermined and has sought a meeting with the Election Commissioners to raise the opposition's concerns. The BJP has defended the electoral revision process and accused the Opposition of questioning institutions after electoral setbacks.
The dispute over the SIR exercise continues amid a wider debate over voter-list revisions, Form 6 and the role of the Election Commission, with the Opposition seeking answers from the poll panel and the ruling side defending the exercise.

INDIA bloc MPs headed to Jantar Mantar on Wednesday to protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, with Congress leaders alleging that around 13 crore names were removed from voter lists and demanding his resignation.

INDIA bloc MPs headed towards Jantar Mantar on Wednesday to hold a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with Congress leaders alleging that around 13 crore names have been removed from the voters’ list.
The opposition leaders are demanding Kumar’s resignation and have also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take responsibility for the alleged removal of names.
Congress MP Mallu Ravi said the opposition was fighting for the democratic rights of those whose names had been deleted from the electoral rolls.
“We are fighting for democracy in India. Names of about 13 crore people have been removed from the voters’ list. They have become second-class citizens. There should not be two types of citizens in India: one with voting rights and the other without voting rights. So, this is like a freedom struggle,” Ravi said.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram questioned why authorities stopped the private bus carrying INDIA bloc MPs as they travelled towards Jantar Mantar.
“We are travelling in a private bus. The bus has the requisite permit. The driver has a licence. We are passengers in a bus. Don’t citizens of this country have the right of free travel? Do we need to announce to the government where we are going? Do we need to get permits from the government to travel privately?” Chidambaram said.
“We are going on a private trip. What is the problem for the government? We are not protesting; we are peacefully travelling in a bus which has the requisite permit and with a driver who has the licence. So, what are we doing illegally? Why are you stopping us?” he said.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said opposition leaders had tried to meet the Election Commissioner on Tuesday but were not granted a meeting. She added that Delhi Police had told them they could not stage a demonstration at the location.
“When we wanted to meet the Election Commissioner yesterday, he did not meet us. Delhi Police told us that we could not demonstrate here. So, we will head to the Jantar Mantar and demonstrate. That is the designated protest site. We will continue to demonstrate until our demands are met,” Shrinate said.
Shrinate also questioned the police action, alleging that the government was attempting to obstruct the opposition’s protest.
“Why is Delhi Police becoming an obstruction? Why are we being stopped? What fear does Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have? The nation has caught their theft. They committed ‘vote theft’. Gyanesh Kumar is an illegal Election Commissioner. Narendra Modi is an illegal Prime Minister. Why are they not understanding this? That is what we want to tell the public,” Shrinate said.
The INDIA bloc MPs are heading to Jantar Mantar as part of their protest against the Election Commission and CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The leaders have said they will continue their demonstration until their demands are met.

Opposition steps up ECI protest as INDIA bloc MPs move towards Jantar Mantar

INDIA bloc MPs gathered in Delhi on Wednesday and planned to move towards Jantar Mantar to protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Security was tightened around Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday as INDIA bloc MPs prepared to head towards the protest site to demonstrate against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The opposition MPs had earlier gathered for a meeting called by Congress president and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss their concerns over the CEC and the SIR exercise.
The meeting was aimed at preparing a letter to the CEC seeking an urgent meeting with opposition leaders to discuss issues related to the SIR.
Speaking ahead of the protest, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said, "Yesterday, they said we cannot protest there, so we are taking the protest to Jantar Mantar... Gyanesh Kumar will have to resign. I want 100 FIRs on me, every FIR is a medal."
TMC MP Derek O'Brien said the opposition parties were united in their campaign.
"We are all here together; we are all here united, and we are all here without any egos. We will fight the giant till they are out," he said.
Security forces were also deployed heavily at Nirvachan Sadan after opposition parties led a march there on Tuesday.
Several key opposition MPs had assembled in the national capital for the meeting convened by Kharge. RJD MP Manoj Jha, while speaking earlier in the day, said, "There will be a lunch; maybe there will also be a launch."
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said the events of the previous day, including Rahul Gandhi's detention, had helped strengthen the opposition's message.
Congress MP Deepender Hooda also said the opposition would not be deterred by police cases.
"Are we going to be scared of an FIR? ...we have just come for lunch; we will have lunch. Our fight to save democracy and the Constitution will continue. I have received information that an FIR has been registered in which my name is also included. We are not going to be intimidated by an FIR."
The opposition has intensified its campaign against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. On Tuesday, opposition parties held a day-long protest that ended with the detention of Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi. Parallel demonstrations are also being held by opposition parties in different states, with the Congress signalling that the confrontation will continue until the CEC resigns.
Separately, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and workers were stopped by police at barricades in Delhi on Wednesday while marching from the Sindhi Academy near Kashmere Gate towards the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office. The protesters alleged widespread "vote theft."

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi questioned the Congress over its stand on voter verification, alleging that the party wants voting rights for “absent, shifted, dead and duplicate voters” without verification.

Sudhanshu Trivedi says Congress is 'intoxicated by defeat' amid ECI protest

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi questioned the Congress over its stand on voter verification, alleging that the party wants voting rights for “absent, shifted, dead and duplicate voters” without verification.

The BJP on Tuesday hit back at the Congress over the Opposition's protest against the Election Commission, with party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi questioning the Congress's stand on voter verification and alleged duplication in electoral rolls.
Trivedi questioned why the Congress would oppose verification of voters classified as “absent, shifted, dead and duplicate voters” and asked whom the party sought to benefit by allowing such voters to retain voting rights without verification.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Trivedi said, “We want to clearly ask the Congress whom it wants to benefit. By giving voting rights to absent, shifted, dead and duplicate voters without any verification, whom does the Congress want to benefit? I am saying it again—what is the Congress’s intention behind giving voting rights to absent, shifted, dead and duplicate voters without any verification, and whom does it want to benefit?”
The BJP leader also accused the Congress of making what he described as baseless claims and linked its current position to earlier statements by senior party leaders on voter duplication.
"Rahul Gandhi himself and many of his senior leaders have said that there is voter duplication at several places. Abhishek Manu Singhvi has also been saying this, as have Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot and many other prominent leaders. K.C. Venugopal has also been saying this. So, we want to ask them: Were you right in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021, or are you right today? The Congress should clarify whether it was telling the truth then or is telling the truth today," Trivedi said.
Trivedi further attacked the Congress over its political record, accusing its leadership of following dynastic politics and alleging that the party had attempted to “infiltrate” Akashvani during Tuesday's protest.
"Friends, they have become so deranged by their continuous defeats in elections and are so deeply involved in misleading the entire country with baseless, nonsensical statements and false claims. They may not like hearing this, but I would like to say this to them: “Intoxicated by political defeat, their minds have become consumed by a defeated and destructive mentality.” The first family of our main Opposition party, the Congress, has, for the past four generations, ruled by strangling democracy and running a system of dynastic rule under the guise of democracy. And today, they have attempted to infiltrate Akashvani (All India Radio) as well,” he said.
Trivedi's remarks came as INDIA bloc MPs continued their protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi.
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were stopped from entering the Election Commission office complex. The INDIA bloc MPs subsequently staged a sit-in outside the EC office after marching from Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan, demanding Kumar's resignation.

Delhi Police detained several Youth Congress and NSUI leaders, including IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib, during protests outside Akashvani Bhavan against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Chib alleged that women workers were injured during the police action.

Delhi Police detain Youth Congress, NSUI leaders amid protest over CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Delhi Police detained several Youth Congress and NSUI leaders, including IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib, during protests outside Akashvani Bhavan against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Chib alleged that women workers were injured during the police action.

Several Youth Congress and NSUI leaders, including Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib, were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday during protests outside Akashvani Bhavan against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Chib alleged that IYC workers, including female office bearers, were injured during the protest and accused the Delhi Police of using force against demonstrators.
“Violence is being committed against those who are peacefully protesting and trying to save the democracy. Our female office bearers have suffered injuries; such is the behaviour of Delhi Police. The violence against journalists and students will not be tolerated. This shows that PM Modi and Shah are scared and trying to save Gyanesh Kumar,” he said.
The detentions came amid a larger Opposition protest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders marched towards Nirvachan Sadan but were stopped by barricades.
Gandhi demanded that the Election Commissioners meet Opposition leaders and answer their questions regarding the SIR exercise.
He said, “300 opposition MPs were removed from there, so I came here and sat. We just want to meet Gyanesh Kumar and the other election commissioners. We are all opposition MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and we just want to talk to them. Don’t know why the Election Commission does not want to talk to us. Crores of people have voted for us. We just want to ask questions, but they don’t want to answer.”
Gandhi also targeted the Centre and CEC Gyanesh Kumar, saying, “The democracy is finished. Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat and Gyanesh Kumar have finished the vote. The nation has understood. In a way, Narendra Modi ji and Amit Shah ji have hijacked the country. We are trying to save the constitution… I am asking the police, if you want to remove me from here, just tell me where in the country I can sit.”
The protest is part of the Opposition's broader "Save Democracy" campaign, under which INDIA bloc leaders have been holding demonstrations and public programmes against the Election Commission.
The latest controversy stems from a report by The Indian Express, which claimed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised 14 objections during the SIR exercise. The ECI has maintained that the decisions were unanimous.

Tensions rise outside ECI headquarters as Congress workers push towards Nirvachan Sadan

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders staged a sit-in after police stopped their march to the Election Commission headquarters.

Tensions escalated outside the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on Tuesday after Congress workers and INDIA bloc supporters attempted to enter Nirvachan Sadan.
The attempt to breach the poll body's gates led to scuffles with security personnel. Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and other senior parliamentarians staged a sit-in at the nearby Akashvani complex, around 100 metres from the ECI office.
Congress leader Pawan Khera criticised the police deployment, saying the Opposition leadership was being prevented from submitting a memorandum to the Election Commission.
"The Election Commission is right next door, but they are not allowing the country's Leader of the Opposition to go; he has been stopped. So you can see, Rahul Gandhi ji, Priyanka Gandhi ji, and all of us are sitting here on a dharna inside Akashvani. The Election Commission is hardly 100 meters from here," Khera told reporters.
Khera also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being afraid of the Opposition's allegations.
"The Leader of the Opposition wants to go there and submit his memorandum, but he is being stopped, and everyone is being stopped very ruthlessly. This is the condition of this country's democracy in the national capital. We understand that Narendra Modi is scared, and he should be; given the kind of misdeeds they have committed, they should be afraid—fear is justified."
Visuals from the spot showed Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several senior INDIA bloc parliamentarians sitting inside the Akashvani Bhavan premises amid heavy police deployment and barricades blocking their movement towards Nirvachan Sadan.
During the protest march, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being responsible for alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
"We should demand the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, at whose behest these wrongdoings are taking place. If the decision within the Election Commission is to be taken by just one person, then why were two other individuals appointed? The system should be scrapped," Randhawa told ANI.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Sudhakar Singh said the protest extended beyond the INDIA bloc and reflected concerns among voters over democratic institutions.
"It is not just the INDIA alliance; sensible voters across the country are united today. This is a crucial fight to save democracy and protect the Constitution," Singh stated.
Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Rajeev Kumar Rai also targeted the Election Commission, saying the protest represented public anger against the poll body.
"The people of the nation have come forward against the Election Commission of India," Rai said.
Congress leader Sukhdeo Bhagat said the Opposition would expand its protests to the district level.
"We are protesting in a democratic manner, and we will also stage protests at the district level. In a democracy, the people are supreme, and the public has now realised that this government was formed by stealing the mandate."
The statements came as police stopped hundreds of protesting INDIA bloc MPs near the NITI Aayog office while they were marching towards Nirvachan Sadan. The Opposition has been demanding transparency in electoral rolls and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Earlier in the day, tensions escalated along the high-security corridor after MPs climbed police barricades. Several senior leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, were taken into custody.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over their protest outside the Election Commission, accusing them of repeatedly targeting constitutional institutions and urging the party to focus on serving people instead.

Kiren Rijiju targets Rahul Gandhi, Congress over ECI protest, calls it 'daily drama'

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over their protest outside the Election Commission, accusing them of repeatedly targeting constitutional institutions and urging the party to focus on serving people instead.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over the INDIA bloc's march to the Election Commission headquarters, saying repeated attacks on constitutional institutions would neither benefit democracy nor help the Congress regain public support.
Rijiju accused Gandhi and the Congress of engaging in what he called a "daily drama" by targeting the Election Commission and the Supreme Court, and urged the party to focus on serving people to secure their mandate.
Speaking to reporters, Rijiju said, "This daily drama by the Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, and their associates - constantly attacking the Election Commission and the Supreme Court - needs to stop now. This drama has been going on continuously since 2014. How long will this drama continue? In a democracy, if you serve the people, you get the public's mandate. When you fail to win the mandate, you abuse the Election Commission. When the Supreme Court asks for an apology, you attack the Supreme Court and claim you have no faith in the judiciary. You call the Election Commission corrupt and call the government corrupt."
"This will neither benefit democracy nor lead to the revival of the Congress Party. I particularly want to tell Rahul Gandhi: Learn from Modi Ji. Learn from BJP workers, who selflessly and continuously work not for themselves, but for society and the country. You should do the same and stop this drama. If you continue to serve the people, they will trust you. Creating drama won't accomplish anything," he added.
Rijiju's remarks came after Gandhi led a march of Opposition MPs towards the Election Commission office in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Gandhi alleged that nearly 300 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs were stopped from meeting the Election Commission and questioned why elected representatives were not being allowed to meet the poll panel. He said the Opposition had reached the Election Commission's doorstep to "save democracy" and alleged that the BJP-led government and constitutional authorities had undermined democratic institutions.
Rijiju hit back by questioning the Congress' record in government and accused the party of raising questions over democratic institutions despite having ruled the country for decades.
"The Congress Party was given the opportunity to rule this country for 55 years, including two years during the Emergency when they ruled by imposing an Emergency and even altered the Preamble of the Constitution. That is the character of the Congress Party, and today they talk about democracy," Rijiju said.
He also urged the Congress not to promote what he described as "anti-India" narratives allegedly pushed by foreign entities.
"My second request to Rahul Gandhi and the Congress Party is to stop promoting the narrative of anti-India forces. Foreign entities that continuously push anti-India narratives to weaken the country, defame Indian constitutional institutions, and mislead the public—at the very least, Congress should not champion their narratives. You have ruled this country for 55 years. Therefore, I request again: the time has come to stop this daily, dramatic routine," he said.
Rijiju further said that political dynamics had changed and that belonging to a particular political family would no longer guarantee political success.
"We are fed up, and the public does not want to see it anymore. The country has moved forward towards a Viksit Bharat. The nation has changed. Simply being born into a specific family will not make you Prime Minister anymore. The youth of this country have changed with a new mindset, moving together under Modi Ji’s leadership to build a developed India by 2047," Rijiju said.
He questioned the Congress' continued targeting of constitutional institutions.
"So why carry out this drama of attacking the Election Commission, the Supreme Court, and constitutional institutions? This drama will no longer work. If Congress wants to win whatever mandate is left for them, they should serve the people. Narratives on social media will not work," the Union Minister said.
Rijiju also referred to his own experience in the Opposition and said political parties needed to build a grassroots connect with people rather than depend on social media campaigns.
"I myself spent 25 years in the Opposition, travelling from village to village on foot to serve the people. Today, villages across the country are connected and united to fulfil the dream of a Developed India," he said.
Meanwhile, the Opposition march towards the Election Commission saw heightened tensions in the national capital. Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders were stopped from entering the Election Commission office complex and later staged a sit-in at the nearby Akashvani complex.
Congress cadres also attempted to breach the poll body's gates, resulting in scuffles with security personnel. Police detained some Congress workers after they allegedly entered Akashvani Bhavan, where prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were in force.
Gandhi had earlier said that the Opposition would "spare no one" allegedly involved in undermining democratic institutions and accused the Election Commission of assisting what he called "vote chori".
Rijiju concluded by urging the Congress to focus on winning voters' confidence through public service rather than continuing its confrontation with constitutional institutions.
"Therefore, stop challenging our government under Modi Ji’s leadership. The people of India stand firmly with Modi Ji and the NDA government," he said.

Rahul Gandhi accused the Centre and Election Commission of undermining the electoral process as opposition MPs marched to Nirvachan Sadan seeking answers from the poll panel over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Rahul Gandhi attacks Centre, CEC over ECI row, says 'Modi-Shah hijacked country'

Rahul Gandhi accused the Centre and Election Commission of undermining the electoral process as opposition MPs marched to Nirvachan Sadan seeking answers from the poll panel over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday targeted the Centre and demanded that the Election Commissioners meet opposition leaders to address their questions over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Opposition MPs marched towards Nirvachan Sadan but were stopped by barricades. Speaking to reporters at Akashvani Bhavan, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of “hijacking” the country and undermining the electoral process.
Gandhi also targeted the Centre and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, saying, “The democracy is finished.
Earlier, Gandhi alleged, "I want to tell the whole country that the police are removing the media personnel from here.”
CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar said opposition MPs were stopped from proceeding further amid heavy security deployment. He also said parties outside the INDIA bloc, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), had joined the protest.
"We were refrained from moving forward from the very beginning. There was a huge deployment of security personnel, CRPF, RAF, and other forces. We tried our level best to move forward. We will intensify the movement. Detention is not the solution; only resignation is... We are all working unitedly, and there is no separate strategy. Even BJD joined us today beyond the limits of the INDIA alliance,” the CPI leader stated.
Leaders from several INDIA bloc parties took part in the march and raised concerns over the SIR exercise. The protest is part of the Opposition's broader "Save Democracy" campaign, under which leaders have been holding demonstrations and public programmes against the Election Commission.
The latest controversy follows a report by The Indian Express claiming that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised 14 objections during the SIR exercise. The Election Commission has maintained that the decisions were unanimous.
Opposition leaders have also questioned modifications made to Form 6 after the Supreme Court on Monday said it had not approved any modified version of the form being used for enrolment of new voters during the SIR exercise.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has reiterated his allegation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, claiming it is “established beyond doubt” that Kumar changed Form 6 illegally and unilaterally.

Rahul Gandhi targets CEC Gyanesh Kumar after SC questions modified Form 6

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has reiterated his allegation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, claiming it is “established beyond doubt” that Kumar changed Form 6 illegally and unilaterally.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday renewed his allegation against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, claiming it was "established beyond doubt" that the CEC had changed Form 6 "illegally and unilaterally."
In a post on X, Gandhi said, "It is now established beyond doubt that Gyanesh Kumar changed Form 6 illegally and unilaterally. This is just one more proof of him abusing his position to help the BJP. He and everyone else involved in this criminal assault on our democracy will be held accountable." He also shared a picture of an earlier Election Commission of India (ECI) press release in support of his allegation.
Gandhi's remarks came after the Supreme Court clarified that it had not approved any modified version of Form 6, which is used to enrol new voters during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made the observation while hearing a plea seeking the suspension and prosecution of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
"Any modified Form 6 has not been approved by us. Let's be clear. When the record is produced, we would like to see who has modified," CJI Surya Kant observed during the hearing.
The issue centres on a declaration attached to Form 6 for the SIR exercise. In a press statement issued on September 26 following a key ECI meeting, the Commission had said, "The declaration attached to Form 6 for SIR has been upheld by the Hon'ble Supreme Court. For non-SIR period, the Forms applicable as per Rules (the Registration of Electors Rules 1960) will be used."
CJP activist Ashutosh Ranka also claimed that the ECI had subsequently withdrawn the press release. "Hilarious. ECI has apparently taken down the Sept 26 press release, which claimed that SC had upheld the Form 6 order. Gyanesh has been thrown under the bus. Gyanesh, it's done bro!," he said.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court refused to pass an ex-parte interim order seeking suspension of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over allegations that key decisions related to the SIR of electoral rolls were taken unilaterally. The bench said the Election Commission and other respondents would first have to be heard.
A bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued notices to the Centre, ECI, Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, Deputy Election Commissioner Maneesh Garg and DG (IT) Seema Khanna.
“Let's first have authenticated information on that. We can always annul any decision…,” the bench observed.
The petition relied on a report alleging that 14 crucial SIR-related decisions were taken in the name of the ECI despite objections recorded by the two other Election Commissioners.
Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for petitioner Rakesh Kumar Singh, sought the immediate suspension of the CEC, arguing that the alleged unilateral decisions posed a serious threat to electoral democracy. Referring to Section 18 of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, Singh submitted that decisions of the ECI were required to be unanimous or, where the members differed, taken by majority.
When Singh sought the CEC's suspension, the bench questioned the practical implications of such an order, including its impact on the functioning of the poll panel. “Who will conduct the elections?” the bench asked.
Singh responded that the other two Election Commissioners could discharge the functions. The bench, however, said it would first examine the allegations after receiving responses from the respondents.
CJI Kant observed that the statutory framework was mandatory and said, “If there is any violation, we will undo.” Justice Bagchi also questioned whether such relief could be granted without hearing the ECI, noting that if the records ultimately showed that decisions were not unanimous, the court could declare them ultra vires.
The CJI further cautioned that the court could not pass an order solely on the basis of newspaper reports.
The plea challenges the functioning of the ECI, alleging that powers vested in the poll panel as a multi-member constitutional body are being exercised without following the collective decision-making mechanism prescribed by law. It contends that the CEC, as Chairman of the Commission, cannot individually exercise powers vested under Article 324 in the ECI as a body.
The petition cites at least 14 contemporaneous objections allegedly recorded by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi between October 2025 and August 2026. The objections include allegations that communications were issued in the name of the ECI without Commission approval, agendas and minutes of meetings were not circulated for over a year, and changes were made to electoral-roll systems without the participation or approval of the two Commissioners.
One of the key grievances relates to the alteration of Form 6 during the SIR exercise. Commissioner Joshi had allegedly objected that the form could not be changed to require SIR-linked disclosures without an amendment to the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. The objection was subsequently endorsed by Sandhu.
The petition also raises concerns over the alleged centralisation of the electoral-roll database and access to ERONet/ECINet by statutory field-level authorities. Joshi had proposed an independent audit of database access credentials, while Sandhu later questioned the authority of the ECI's Director General (IT) to restrict access available to statutory electoral officers.
Another issue raised in the plea concerns appeals filed in the name of the ECI before West Bengal Appellate Tribunals against voters whose inclusion had been directed by judicial officers. Sandhu allegedly questioned who had authorised the appeals and under what authority.
The plea further relies on Section 18 of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023, which provides that the Commission's business should, as far as possible, be transacted unanimously and, where the members differ, decided by majority.
Among the interim reliefs sought are preservation of electoral-roll data and audit trails, a direction against further substantive alteration of Form 6, and protection against irreversible changes to electoral-roll data pending adjudication.
The petitioner has also sought an interim direction restraining Gyanesh Kumar from exercising the functions of CEC and requiring the Commission's business to be transacted by the other two Commissioners.

The Supreme Court clarified that it had not approved any modified version of Form 6 being used for new voter enrolment during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The court said it would examine records.

Supreme Court says it did not approve modified Form 6 for SIR

The Supreme Court clarified that it had not approved any modified version of Form 6 being used for new voter enrolment during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The court said it would examine records.

The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that it had not approved any modified version of Form 6 being used for the enrolment of new voters during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said it would examine the records to determine who introduced the changes after the Election Commission claimed last week that the new declaration attached to the online Form 6 had been approved by the apex court.
“Any modified Form 6 has not been approved by us. Let’s be clear. When the record is produced, we would like to see who has modified it,” the CJI observed.
The clarification came during the hearing of a plea filed by advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi seeking prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other officials over alleged unilateral decisions concerning the SIR exercise.
The issue relates to a new declaration added to Form 6, under which applicants are required to state whether they or their parents were mapped in the previous SIR. The requirement was not part of the earlier Form 6 used during SIR exercises in other states.
The petitioner has sought an independent judicial inquiry into the alleged decisions and prosecution under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing for the petitioner, raised concerns over the changes made to Form 6, which is used by eligible citizens to apply for inclusion of their names in electoral rolls.
The bench issued notice in the matter and tagged the plea with a similar case challenging decisions taken by the Election Commission in connection with the SIR exercise.

The Supreme Court has sought the Election Commission of India’s response to allegations that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar took decisions without consensus from the other Election Commissioners.

Supreme Court refuses to suspend Gyanesh Kumar, seeks ECI response on allegations

The Supreme Court has sought the Election Commission of India’s response to allegations that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar took decisions without consensus from the other Election Commissioners.

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to pass an interim order suspending Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations that he took decisions unilaterally in the Election Commission of India (ECI), without the consensus of the other two Election Commissioners.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued notice to the ECI and sought its response to the allegations. The Court indicated that it could reconsider decisions taken by the poll panel if it finds, after examining the ECI's response, that they were not taken in accordance with the required decision-making process.
“After notice, if they come and show that ABC decisions were taken without unanimity, we will take those decisions back” it said.
The Court was hearing pleas challenging the functioning of the ECI in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. One of the petitions alleged that powers vested in the ECI as a multi-member constitutional body were being exercised without following the collective decision-making mechanism prescribed by law.
The petition also raised allegations over decisions relating to electoral rolls, voter registration and other aspects of the Commission's functioning. The Court sought the ECI's response before considering any further interim relief.
The developments came a day after Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, while speaking at an event at NALSAR University in Hyderabad, said that any process resulting in the disenfranchisement of millions of citizens would be "intrinsically arbitrary".
Following the remarks, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh demanded the immediate resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that Justice Bhuyan had exposed the CEC "lock, stock and barrel."
The Congress leader claimed that the CEC has become a "liability for the country" and alleged that he was executing "illegal orders." In a post on social media platform X, Ramesh wrote:
"Here is the bold Justice Ujjal Bhuyan speaking yesterday in NALSAR University in Hyderabad where he exposed the CEC lock, stock and barrel. If he has any sense of shame Gyanesh Kumar must quit right away. His ability to execute G2’s illegal orders have now made him a liability for the country."
Justice Bhuyan had said during his address at the valedictory ceremony of the 19th NALSAR BRS Moot Court Competition that any process leading to the disenfranchisement of millions of citizens and turning them into "second-class citizens" without voting rights would be arbitrary.
"If any process results in disenfranchising millions and millions of Indian citizens, making them second-class citizens in their own country in the sense of being citizens without voting rights, such a process is intrinsically arbitrary. No amount of whataboutery can justify it. It strikes at the very heart of the Constitution," Justice Bhuyan had stated.
His remarks came amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the ECI's SIR exercise and opposition parties' criticism of the poll panel's functioning. The issue has also led to demands for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
On Sunday, the Indian Youth Congress held a protest march from Raisina Road towards Jantar Mantar against Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters accused the Central government of shielding the CEC and demanded his resignation.
The march was led by IYC National President Uday Bhanu Chib, with hundreds of youth workers carrying placards and raising slogans against the government amid heavy police deployment and barricading along the route.
Speaking to ANI, Chib criticised the Delhi Police for stopping the demonstrators from marching towards the designated protest site.
"The question is that we are going to Jantar Mantar. Even the Supreme Court said that if you want to protest peacefully, you have to go to Jantar Mantar. But we are not being allowed because Modi and Shah have to save Gyanesh. This traitor of the country, Gyanesh, cannot be saved. We will go towards Jantar Mantar. No one's father owns Jantar Mantar. If they try to stop us here, we will sit down right there. They are scared; their theft has been caught. For the last year and a half, Rahul Gandhi has been exposing these thieves' thievery to the country, and now more evidence is coming out," Chib asserted.
The controversy has also followed a report in The Indian Express alleging that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally raised objections on at least 14 occasions over 10 months concerning decisions related to electoral rolls, voter registration and the Commission's technology systems.
The ECI, however, rejected the suggestion that these objections amounted to institutional dissent over final decisions. The poll panel said operational queries, inputs and suggestions raised during the draft stage were part of its standard administrative and decision-making process.
The ECI has also maintained that decisions concerning the schedule of the SIR exercise were unanimous.

Speaking after the bloc's coordination meeting in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said the opposition would work together to bring serious changes in the country over the coming months.

Rahul Gandhi Says INDIA Bloc Will Ensure Those Who 'Destroyed Democracy' Are Punished

Speaking after the bloc's coordination meeting in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said the opposition would work together to bring serious changes in the country over the coming months.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said INDIA bloc leaders were committed to ensuring action against those whom he accused of destroying Indian democracy, and said the opposition would work to "make serious changes in the country" over the next few months.
Speaking after the INDIA bloc coordination meeting in New Delhi, Gandhi said the opposition leaders were committed to taking action regardless of the position or seniority of those involved.
"It is the personal commitment of all INDIA leaders that we are going to ensure that the people who have destroyed Indian democracy are punished. It doesn't matter how senior they are, who they are; Indian democracy is bigger than every single person in this country," he said.
Gandhi said the meeting also reflected a sense of resistance among young people over what he described as the state of democracy in the country.
"There was also a feeling in the room that the opposition has been quite successful in putting a cross to the people of India that elections are stolen, that Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have destroyed democracy, and there is a new sense of resistance, particularly among young people, that what is going on in India is wrong and needs to be stopped," the Congress MP said.
Describing opposition leaders as the "collective defenders of the Indian Constitution", Gandhi said it was an honour to work with them.
"We are confident that over the next few months, we will make serious changes in the country," he said.
The remarks came after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced a nationwide protest programme against the Election Commission and over alleged threats to democratic institutions.
Kharge said the INDIA bloc meeting lasted nearly three-and-a-half hours, during which leaders from various parties expressed their views and agreed to fight together.
"Discussions continued for around three-and-a-half hours. Many leaders expressed their views. Uddhav Thackeray ji and Hemant Soren ji also shared their views. Everyone has decided to fight together in a united manner," Kharge said.
Kharge alleged that institutions were being weakened and accused the Election Commission of being influenced by the government. He also alleged that elections were being won through unfair means and claimed that the democratic functioning of opposition parties was being disrupted.
Under the announced protest programme, INDIA bloc leaders will hold a "Save Democracy March" at the district level from October 2 to October 8. Opposition MPs will march to the Election Commission on October 6, while opposition leaders will meet President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October to raise concerns over alleged institutional issues.
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also addressed the press conference and said the opposition would continue its protest until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns. She also demanded PM Modi's resignation.
“It is publicly known that Gyanesh Kumar is a thief, a dacoit. He has hijacked the EVMs. Our demand is that if Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, this protest will continue for a long time. The Prime Minister must resign immediately. We will save democracy. We want your support, students, youth and journalists," Banerjee said.
With the opposition continuing to raise the issue, the stage is set for a bitter political fight, especially with 5 states going to the polls in 2027.

INDIA Bloc Made To Promote Rahul Gandhi, Congress Betrayed Allies: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticised the INDIA bloc, claiming it lacks political relevance and was formed to promote Rahul Gandhi.

Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Premchand Bairwa on Wednesday criticised the INDIA bloc ahead of its meeting in Delhi, questioning the alliance's relevance and cohesion.
Speaking to ANI, Chandrasekhar said the INDIA bloc had failed to establish a unified agenda and accused the Congress of undermining its regional allies, including Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK.
"INDIA alliance has no relevance; it did not have any earlier and does not have any today," Chandrasekhar said. "The INDIA alliance was fundamentally created to bring Rahul Gandhi forward and promote him. The Congress has betrayed its INDIA alliance partners, including the DMK, and has aligned with others."
Bairwa also criticised the opposition grouping, saying alliances formed by it had repeatedly failed due to a lack of trust. He said BJP-led alliances remained strong because they were based on the party's values and work culture.
Speaking to ANI in Jaipur, Bairwa said, "Whenever they have formed alliances, those alliances have failed; the reason for this failure is a lack of trust in their modus operandi. In contrast, the BJP’s alliances endure because they are rooted in the party's ethos, values, and work culture."
He further attributed the longevity of BJP alliances to public trust in the Bharatiya Janata Party.
"Since the public trusts the BJP, its alliances remain strong. Therefore, I do not believe their alliance will last, or indeed, has ever lasted. You can see how many times they have formed alliances and subsequently failed," Bairwa added.
His remarks came on the day leaders of the INDIA bloc were scheduled to meet in the national capital to discuss various issues.
Earlier, after the INDIA bloc coordination meeting in New Delhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced a series of protests against the Election Commission and over alleged threats to democratic institutions, saying opposition parties would work together in a coordinated manner.
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Kharge said discussions continued for nearly three-and-a-half hours, with leaders from various parties sharing their views and agreeing to fight together.
He alleged that elections were being won through unfair means and claimed that the democratic functioning of opposition parties was being disrupted.

INDIA bloc announces protest marches against Election Commission, plans rallies in October-November

After an INDIA bloc coordination meeting in New Delhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced a series of protests against the Election Commission and alleged threats to democratic institutions.

The INDIA bloc on Wednesday announced a series of protests against the Election Commission, including a district-level "Save Democracy March" from October 2 to October 8 and a march by opposition MPs to the Election Commission on October 6. The announcement came after a coordination meeting in New Delhi, where opposition parties agreed to work together in a coordinated manner.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said discussions continued for nearly three-and-a-half hours, with leaders from various parties sharing their views and agreeing to fight together.

Kharge alleged that institutions were being weakened and accused the Election Commission of being influenced by the government. He alleged that elections were being won through unfair means and claimed that the democratic functioning of opposition parties was being disrupted.
Kharge said opposition leaders would also seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October to raise concerns over alleged institutional issues. He added that five major rallies would be held in October-November, with their venues and dates to be finalised soon. A major rally will be organised in Delhi on November 1.
"Members of the INDIA bloc will stage protests at DM offices from October 2 to October 8, and on October 6, all opposition MPs will march to the Election Commission. Opposition leaders will seek an appointment with the President in the second week of October to apprise her of the manner in which institutions are being taken over. Five major rallies will be held in Oct-Nov, and the venues and dates will be finalised soon. A major rally will be organised in Delhi on November 1 because everyone now acknowledges what Rahul ji and Didi used to say on 'vote chori"
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the opposition would continue to protest until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns. She also demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resignation.

BJP leader Smriti Irani accused Congress of undermining constitutional institutions and questioned its opposition to voter list revisions.

Smriti Irani targets Congress over ECI remarks, questions opposition's stand on voter list revision

BJP leader Smriti Irani accused Congress of undermining constitutional institutions and questioned its opposition to voter list revisions.

BJP leader Smriti Irani on Tuesday accused the Congress leadership of undermining constitutional bodies and questioning the integrity of the Election Commission of India (ECI) instead of introspecting on its electoral defeats.
Addressing a press conference, Irani criticised the opposition party's recent statements on electoral roll updates and voter list revisions. She recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stance that political opposition to him was part of democracy, but attacks should not target democratic institutions.
"Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly said: criticise him, attack him, but do not let this attack turn into an assault on constitutional institutions and India's democracy," Irani stated. "However, the Congress leadership is leaving no stone unturned in tearing apart India's constitutional framework."
Irani questions Congress over voter list revision
Responding to Congress's claims regarding 13.3 crore entries in voter lists, Irani said the Election Commission had issued an official clarification on the door-to-door verification process conducted by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to remove duplicate and deceased voters.
Questioning the Congress's opposition to the exercise, she said, "If there are duplicate names or deceased individuals in the electoral rolls, why does the Congress party want the names of deceased people restored? Why does the Congress party want duplicate entries to remain?"
Irani also questioned the Congress leadership's position in states governed by non-BJP parties, including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala and Karnataka, asking whether it applied the same standards to the Election Commission in those states.
Irani invokes Congress's history
Referring to the Congress's historical reference to the pre-independence Lahore Session, Irani cited British official A.O. Hume's role in the formation of the Indian National Congress and its alleged aim of protecting British colonial interests.
Criticising the opposition for using historical parallels to question the democratic setup, Irani remarked, "A Congress party that was created for the protection of the British Empire is today attacking the Election Commission of India... Nothing could be more shameful than this."
Congress demands resignations over ECI row
Meanwhile, a day before the INDIA alliance meeting, the Congress on Tuesday demanded the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah following media reports about internal dissent within the Election Commission of India.
The demand was adopted through a resolution at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's top decision-making body.
The resolution called for the resignation of Modi, Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. It also demanded an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists across several states and the reinstatement of over 13 lakh names removed from electoral rolls during the revision process.
The CWC's reaction followed an Indian Express report stating that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised 14 procedural and legal objections against CEC Gyanesh Kumar regarding the conduct of the SIR exercise, including flagging recent modifications to Form 6 as "illegal."

West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari claimed the INDIA bloc had ended and made allegations about Mamata Banerjee's planned Delhi visit ahead of the opposition meeting on electoral irregularities.

Suvendu Adhikari Claims INDIA Bloc Has Ended, Targets Mamata's Delhi Visit

West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari claimed the INDIA bloc had ended and made allegations about Mamata Banerjee's planned Delhi visit ahead of the opposition meeting on electoral irregularities.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday claimed that the INDIA bloc had ended and alleged that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit to Delhi could involve meetings with people he referred to as "Dimagi Naxals" and those raising "Azadi" slogans.
"INDI alliance ended long ago. What is Mamata Banerjee going to do in Delhi? She is going to plan with the 'Dimagi Naxals' and those who give Azadi slogans. I will tell Delhi to keep a close watch. Do not let any anti-national force meet with her," Adhikari said.
He further alleged that Mamata had Jamaat in one hand and "Dimagi Naxals" in the other.
"Jamaat is now giving the main mantra to the Dimagi Naxals. She has Jamaat in one hand and Dimagi Naxal in the other," he added.
Banerjee is set to attend the INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi on Wednesday, where opposition leaders are likely to deliberate on a proposed nationwide protest over allegations of electoral irregularities.
Adhikari accuses Mamata of targeting judiciary over SIR
Amid the ongoing row over the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Adhikari on Sunday said the rejection of 27 lakh entries over logical discrepancies was carried out by the judiciary and not government officials.
Speaking to ANI, he said, "Regarding the SIR in Bengal, the rejection of 27 lakh entries due to logical discrepancies was not done by government officials. Mamata Banerjee and her party went to the Supreme Court; the Supreme Court appointed District Judges, and it was the District Judges who deleted the names. So, she is speaking against the Judiciary."
"In West Bengal, the SIR work, specifically addressing logical discrepancies, was not carried out by government officials but by the judiciary. The Supreme Court invoked Article 142, took the powers away from the ERO (Electoral Registration Officer), and directly empowered the District Judges to delete those names. Challenging the Judiciary is tantamount to challenging Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution," he added.
Election Commission rejects claims of institutional dissent
The political row intensified following an investigative report by The Indian Express, which said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months regarding decisions and procedures linked to the SIR exercise.
The Election Commission has rejected the suggestion that the reported objections represented institutional dissent, maintaining that decisions related to SIR were taken with the unanimous approval of the Commission.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reiterated the party's four demands over alleged electoral irregularities, including the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of SIR, restoration of 13 crore voter names and resignations of PM Modi and Amit Shah.

Congress reiterates four demands over alleged electoral malpractices, seeks CEC's resignation

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reiterated the party's four demands over alleged electoral irregularities, including the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of SIR, restoration of 13 crore voter names and resignations of PM Modi and Amit Shah.

Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday reiterated the party's four demands over allegations of electoral malpractices against the Election Commission of India.
The Congress held its Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in New Delhi, attended by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, senior leader Sonia Gandhi and other leaders.
In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh said the CWC had “resolved to resist the RSS-BJP’s capture of the electoral process”.
“Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi has been warning the country about Vote Chori for over a year and a half. The recent revelations have emerged because of his conviction and the sustained efforts of the Congress. Today, there is a nationwide demand to restore the integrity of India’s elections,” he said.
Congress lists four demands
The Congress reiterated its demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of names removed from voter lists.
“We have 4 clear demands: - The immediate resignation of the CEC. - The immediate suspension of the SIR. - The immediate restoration of the 13+ crore names removed from the electoral rolls. - The resignation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, who have organised Vote Chori,” Jairam Ramesh said.
“The Congress is not only a party of opposition, but also a party of resistance. We will ensure that this struggle reaches its rightful conclusion,” he added.
The CWC resolution stated that more than 13 crore names had been removed from draft voter lists during the SIR exercise across 30 states and Union Territories.
Election Commission rejects claims of dissent
The political row intensified following an investigative report by The Indian Express, which said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months regarding decisions and procedures linked to the SIR exercise.
The Election Commission has rejected the suggestion that the reported objections represented institutional dissent, maintaining that decisions related to the SIR were taken with the unanimous approval of the Commission.

The Aam Aadmi Party announced it will skip the INDIA bloc meeting on alleged electoral irregularities but support an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Parliament.

AAP to skip INDIA bloc meeting on EC row, backs impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The Aam Aadmi Party announced it will skip the INDIA bloc meeting on alleged electoral irregularities but support an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Parliament.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday announced that it would skip the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled in Delhi on Wednesday to discuss alleged electoral irregularities and a proposed nationwide protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI).
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the party would instead support an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in Parliament, adding that it was prepared to join hands with opposition parties on the issue.
Speaking to ANI, Singh said the AAP was no longer part of the INDIA alliance and saw no reason to attend the meeting.
“The Aam Aadmi Party has already made it clear that we are not part of the INDIA alliance, so there is no point in attending such a meeting.”
Singh said the party had already signed the impeachment motion against Kumar and would support collective opposition action if it was taken up in Parliament.
“As far as the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is concerned, we have already signed it. If an impeachment motion against Gyanesh Kumar is brought in Parliament and any action is taken, we will join hands with all the opposition parties and fight this battle together.”
The INDIA bloc meeting is expected to bring opposition leaders together to discuss a proposed nationwide campaign over allegations of electoral irregularities and concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Sanjay Singh accuses Congress of targeting Samajwadi Party in UP
Reacting to reports that Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav may also stay away from the opposition meeting, Singh accused the Congress of creating difficulties for the SP and its leadership in Uttar Pradesh.
“We are seeing how Congress has been troubling the Samajwadi Party and Akhilesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh,” the AAP leader said.
Singh also questioned the Congress's reported seat demands in the state, alleging that its public statements appeared to place it at odds with the Samajwadi Party rather than the BJP.
“Today, we heard a statement that Congress wants 150 seats. At times, they say they will contest all 403 seats; sometimes they say they want 200 seats. Are they fighting the BJP or the Samajwadi Party? Their statements make it seem as though they are fighting the Samajwadi Party,” Sanjay Singh said.
Opposition row over Election Commission intensifies
The latest developments come amid an escalating political dispute over the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR exercise.
The controversy intensified following an investigative report by The Indian Express, which reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months concerning decisions and procedures linked to SIR.
The Election Commission, however, has rejected suggestions that the reported objections amounted to institutional dissent, maintaining that decisions concerning the revision exercise were taken with the unanimous approval of the Commission.
The proposed INDIA bloc meeting on Wednesday is expected to focus on opposition coordination and the next steps in its campaign over electoral transparency and accountability.

The Congress Working Committee demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of 13.3 crore names allegedly removed from voter lists.

Congress Demands CEC's Resignation, SIR Suspension; Questions Modi Over 'Vote Chori'

The Congress Working Committee demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of 13.3 crore names allegedly removed from voter lists.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Tuesday demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of 13.30 crore names that the party alleges have been removed from voter lists.
The resolutions were adopted at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters amid allegations by the opposition party of electoral irregularities and a lack of transparency in the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The CWC accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to capture the electoral process, allegedly with the support of the poll panel under the current CEC. The party described the issue as a "grave danger to our democracy".
In its resolution, the Congress said the developments had reinforced concerns raised by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi through his "Vote Chori" campaign.
The party cited alleged selective enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, concerns over electronic voting machines (EVMs), additions and deletions in electoral rolls, changes to the CEC appointment process and the grant of lifelong immunity to the CEC.
It also questioned the reported concentration of decision-making powers in the office of the CEC, alleging that the Election Commission had become a "one-man show", with decisions being taken without adequate consultation with the other Election Commissioners.
The resolution referred to an investigative report by The Indian Express, which said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months regarding decisions and procedures linked to SIR, including alleged "unauthorised" and "illegal" changes to Form 6.
The Congress said the reported objections raised questions about the credibility of the electoral process and the transparency of the nationwide revision exercise.
Congress questions constitutional validity of SIR, seeks restoration of voter names
The CWC expressed concerns over the constitutional validity of SIR, claiming that the exercise had "already wiped out 13 crore 30 lakh Indians from the electoral rolls".
According to the resolution, the process places an excessive burden on citizens to establish their eligibility to vote and lacks adequate transparent safeguards, potentially resulting in what the party termed "arbitrary mass-disenfranchisement".
The Congress argued that such an exercise could not be reconciled with Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law, and Article 326, which provides for universal adult suffrage.
"An exercise of doubtful constitutional validity cannot be allowed to decide who may vote in the world's largest democracy," the resolution said.
The party subsequently listed three principal demands: the immediate resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of the SIR exercise and restoration of the 13.30 crore names it claims have been deleted from electoral rolls.
The CWC alleged that the CEC had "forfeited all moral and institutional authority" and called for accountability over the reported changes to voter lists.
"This brazen Vote Chori has been organised by the CEC on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. Nothing short of their resignation will ensure the safety of our constitution and hard-earned democracy," the resolution alleged.
The Congress also said it would continue its campaign in Parliament, courts and on the streets until those responsible were punished, voters' rights were protected and the ECI's independence was restored.
"For the Indian National Congress, the struggle to restore universal adult franchise in India is no less than the Freedom Struggle itself. And we will ensure that this struggle reaches its rightful conclusion," the resolution said.
Kharge calls CEC ‘puppet’ of Modi government, lists five demands
Earlier in the day, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused Gyanesh Kumar of acting at the behest of the Modi government and said the party wanted an Election Commission that commanded equal trust from both the ruling party and the opposition.
"Names are being removed from voter lists through calculated conspiracies, and the Chief Election Commissioner has become a puppet of the Modi government," Kharge said.
Questioning the internal decision-making process surrounding SIR, he asked why the two other Election Commissioners were allegedly denied access to the internal portal.
"Is it wrong to ask who took the decision of SIR? Is it wrong to ask why two Election Commissioners were kept out of the Internal Portal? Was something secretive going on," Kharge said.
Kharge outlined five demands aimed at ensuring transparency and protecting voters' rights ahead of Assembly elections in five states in 2027.
The demands included:

Publication of complete data on every major change in voter lists.

Full information and an opportunity to appeal for voters whose names have been deleted.

Timely access for political parties to voter lists and essential related data in a simplified format.

Independent and time-bound investigations into serious discrepancies.

Transparency in crucial data and decisions concerning the electoral process.

Kharge said the measures were necessary to prevent violations of voting rights and maintain public confidence in the electoral system.
KC Venugopal says PM Modi has ‘no moral right to continue’
Addressing a joint press conference with Congress general secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh after the CWC meeting, party general secretary KC Venugopal demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention over the alleged irregularities.
Venugopal said two Election Commissioners had written to the Cabinet Secretary regarding the internal functioning and decisions of the poll panel, placing the matter within the Prime Minister's knowledge.
He said the Prime Minister had a moral responsibility to intervene and hold those responsible accountable.
"It's done by the clear directions of his masters; in this country, two election commissioners have written to the Cabinet Secretary also, so it's in the knowledge of the Prime Minister also. This is the moral responsibility of the PM to intervene. CWC's opinion is that PM Modi has no moral right to continue as the Prime Minister," he said.
Venugopal also praised Rahul Gandhi for raising concerns over the electoral process through the Vote Chori campaign, claiming that the Congress leader had presented evidence over the past 18 to 19 months.
"The entire Working Committee congratulated Rahul Gandhi for taking up the biggest issue of Indian democracy through the 'Vote Chori' campaign. For the last 18-19 months, he has continuously presented to the nation evidence that the Chief Election Commissioner is completely compromised; the election system of this country is rigged, whether it is the EVM machine or the voter list, both of them are compromised, both of them are designed for winning elections for the BJP," he said.
Congress announces nationwide protests, opposition to discuss joint strategy
Venugopal said the CWC meeting, which lasted around two-and-a-half hours, discussed concerns over the CEC and alleged manipulation of the electoral system. He added that 68 members participated in the meeting.
Drawing a parallel with the Congress's demand for complete independence during the freedom struggle, Venugopal said Rahul Gandhi had referred to the 1930 Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress.
"Today, Rahul Gandhi reminded us about the Lahore Congress Session of 1930, the Indian National Congress AICC session. When the British denied even provincial rule to the Indian National Congress, at that point of time, we took a decision to agitate for a Poorna Swaraj. The present government is not hearing the voice of the people of this country; they are not hearing the demands of the people of this country; then only one way for the parties who believe in democracy to resist," he said.
The Congress general secretary announced that the party would launch nationwide demonstrations against what it described as electoral manipulation, while maintaining that the protests would remain peaceful.
"We are going to resist aggressively with peaceful demonstrations, with peaceful movements all over the country," he said.
Venugopal further said the Congress would coordinate with other opposition parties to intensify the campaign. The Congress and other opposition parties are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss a joint strategy for taking the protests forward.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has rejected suggestions that the reported objections by the two Election Commissioners amounted to institutional dissent, maintaining that decisions concerning SIR were taken with the unanimous approval of the Commission.
