Board exams twice a year, class 11, 12 students to study 2 languages: MoE's new curriculum framework

Board exams will be offered at least twice a year and students will also be allowed to retain the best score, as per an education ministry document. It further said that class 11 and 12 students will have to study two languages.

Board examinations will be conducted twice a year with students having the option to retain the best score, while class 11 and 12 students will have to study two languages instead of one, according to the Ministry of Education&rsquo;s new curriculum framework.
According to ministry officials, the curriculum, as per the New Education Policy (NEP), is ready and textbooks will be developed on its basis for the 2024 academic session.
&ldquo;In classes 11 and 12, students will have to study two languages and one of them has to be an Indian language,&rdquo; the final NCF (National Curriculum Framework) document accessed by PTI said.
In order to make the board exams &ldquo;easier&rdquo; from the current &ldquo;high stakes&rdquo; practice, the examination will assess the understanding and achievement of competencies rather than months of coaching and memorisation.
&ldquo;Board exams will be offered at least twice a year to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. Students can then appear for a board exam in subjects they have completed and feel ready for. They will also be allowed to retain the best score,&rdquo; it said.
The choice of subjects in classes 11 and 12 will not be restricted to streams such as Arts, Science and Commerce to get the flexibility to choose.
&ldquo;In due course of time, school boards are to develop capacities to offer &lsquo;on demand&rsquo; exams in due course of time. Besides board exam test developers and evaluators will have to go through university-certified courses before taking up this work,&rdquo; it said.
The new framework has also noted that the current practice of &lsquo;covering&rsquo; textbooks in the classroom will be avoided while stressing that the cost of textbooks should be optimised

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has retained the top spot among institutes in the country for the third consecutive year, according to the Ministry of Education's NIRF ranking announced on Thursday.
The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has ranked the best among research institutions and has been ranked at second place in the overall ranking. IIT Bombay has taken the third spot on top universities list.
In the sixth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework announced by Union Education Dharmendra Pradhan, eight IITs and two national Institutes of Technology figured in the top ten engineering institutions in the country.
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad ranked as the best B-School, while Jamia Hamdard was declared the top institution for pharmacy studies.
In the colleges category, Miranda House in Delhi bagged the first rank followed by Lady Sri Ram College for Women, Delhi and Loyola College, Chennai.
As per the NIRF ranking, AIIMS Delhi has bagged the top spot among medical colleges followed by PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Vellore.

"Besides, two more institutes namely Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow, and Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) at Qutub Enclave in New Delhi are also found functioning in violation of the UGC Act, 1956. The matters of Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow and IIPM, New Delhi are sub-judice in the court," he added.Delhi has seven such fake universities - Commercial University Ltd, United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR Centric Juridicial University, Indian Institution of Science and Engineering, Vishwakarma Open University for Self Employment and Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University).

The virtual meeting will take place at 11:30 am and will be chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' will attend along with &nbsp;Smriti Zubin Irani and Prakash Javadekar.
Pokhriyal said on Saturday said PM Modi has desired that any decision that affects students has to be taken after consultation with states and the education stakeholders like the teachers, parents and students.
The Education Ministry, and the CBSE are &ldquo;exploring options&rdquo; regarding the conduct of examinations, keeping in view the safety of students and teachers, the Education Ministry said.

Speaking at an event organised by the Education Ministry, the prime minister said that &ldquo;people trapped in bookish knowledge&rdquo; often fail to grasp that language is a way to communicate knowledge and not the entire knowledge in itself. The PM also made it clear that while local languages were being promoted in the new National Education Policy, there was no bar at all on the teaching of English or any other language that can be helpful on the global stage.
